Dusky Ridges - Te Anau farmstay Bed and Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 1, 2012

My friends and I (4 of us) was travelling in south island and stayed in Dusky Ridges when we were in Te Anau. The accomodation provided was absolutely fantastic. Clean, homely and comfortable.
The decor was tastefully done. Win and Hendrik welcome us like a family. They were friendly and hospitable. Win also prepared specialty such as venison as well as other small delights throughout our stay at Dusky Ridges.

We loved our stay at Dusky Ridges and are missing it terribly now we are home. Win and Hendrik could not have been any more accommodating and lovely during our three day stay. We loved the townhouse, it was absolutely spotless but very homely at the same time, and the kitchen supplies and ability to make our own food in the full sized kitchen was a welcome change to eating at restaurants constantly (not that there weren't heaps of lovely restaurants and cares in Te Anau). Most of all we loved the peace and quiet and getting to meet the Dusky Ridges 'pets' - over two dozen farm animals separate to the rest of the working sheep, cattle and deer farm. We hope to return to Te Anau again in the coming years and would be thrilled to return to stay with Win and Hendrik - we couldn't have found a better place to stay.

Our boys (5 and 8) and my wife and I will not soon forget our taste of farm life at Dusky Ridges. This farm, accommodation and whole experience really left our family with great memories. Thank you Win and Henrik for your kindness and hospitality and thanks to the people who took the time to review this place so that we also experienced this amazing part of the world and met these wonderful hosts. Whilst we did the tourist things in Te Anau, which were good, it was this place that we all remember and valued the most.

Wow! Win and Henrik outdo themselves! I must echo other guests in saying this was the best of all our farmstays in New Zealand. We had many wonderful stays, but this one would be a challenge to best. Win is an ever so engaging hostess with a wonderful heart of gold. We enjoyed her company so very much.

This is a luxurious, two floor townhouse, scrupulously clean, and appointed with great care and attention to detail. The kitchen is enviably outfitted, but even better yet, the contents of the fridge! Win stocked us up with farm fresh eggs, manuka honey, freshly baked breads and cookies, juice, milk, and venison sausage. Heavenly! The beds were deliciously comfortable, with fluffy pillows and comforters...and the overhead window in the master bedroom was a unique delight, especially with the moonlight. This is serious sleeping territory! There is a heated bathroom floor which only made me want it all the more for my own home. This house is idea for a family of four as the children can be upstairs sleeping as parents are downstairs in the living spaces without disturbing them.

And the farm! We so enjoyed the friendly dog, sheep, and deer with a penchant for chewing hair, jacket zipper pulls and the like...great fun! We got to feed them and then we saw the sheep dogs, chickens, and guinea hens. Always a treat, we were able to collect our own eggs! Win showed us the sheep shearing house, explained the processes, and told us all about the deer business. The deer are some interesting tenants...when we first drove in, we stopped and quietly approached the fence for the deer herd...we were a bit surprised with their first reaction!

Dusky Ridge is a superb location for the Doubtful Sound cruise, it makes for a so much more civilized morning than the bus trip from Queenstown. Lake Te Anau, the rolling green hills, and snowy mountains in the distance make for a dream postcard view. Quite stunning.

As we were leaving, Win gave us extra eggs to take along in case our next destination did not provide them..so heartwarming! If there is a better farmstay in NZ, I cannot imagine how glorious it might be!

My 12-year-old son and I did a farm stay with Win and Henrik and had a marvelous time in June 2011. They installed us in the unit outside the main house and it was well-furnished, beautiful, spacious, modern and comfortable. They kitchen was stocked with delicious food and a plate of cookies was awaiting upon arrival. The farm itself presents a spectacular view of the mountains. We watched the feeding of the animals and were able to interact with the alpacas and sheep. Before our departure Win discovered it was my birthday and baked me a delicious American-style birthday cake. Their hospitality and the beauty of their farm were unparalleled. We will return at the next opportunity.

This was best accommodation during our stay in NZ. The apartment was perfect and so beautifully decorated. The owners had thought of everything and provided lots of beautiful food for the stay. The farm was lovely and the views amazing. The beds were so comfy. My children loved staying at the farm.

This was the pinnacle stay of our one month road trip in New Zealand.

Accommodation wise, the rooms were spick and span, it really could not have been any cleaner. The beds were large and comfy, the linen were very clean and the blankets and the heaters kept us warm in the cold winter nights. The house was very modern and new. I mean, honestly, where can you find a farmstay with a heated bathroom floor! The shower was real nice, heater worked well. The stoves work fine, utensils were new, dishwasher was new, microwave worked well, fridge was large enough. Basically, you really can't fault any part of the house.

In terms of service, Win and Henrik will definitely make your stay a memorable one. When we first reached, Win greeted us with a heart warming smile and our breakfast. As you can read in the earlier threads, we were provided amazing homemade bread, honey, jam, ham, fresh eggs, venison sausages, freshly baked brownies, fresh fruits, milk, yoghurt, chocolate bars etc.The farmtour she provided also really gave us an insight to the farm. We had fun playing with and feeding the pet sheeps, alpacas (one of them called chile), pet dog (Monty) and lastly their cute pet spotted deer Phoebe! We also got to interact with the working dogs, 2 border collies and 2 huntaways. Win also had 6 chickens and quite a few Guinea Fowls! The guinea fowls were really beautiful strutting around in their polka dot feathers! On our 2nd day of the farm, Henrik brought us out to have a look at his daily life. We went with him to ration the winter crops for the sheeps and out of kindness he even gave one of us a ride on the tractor while he fed his sheeps. We were also given the opportunity to retrieve our own eggs from the coop on the 2nd day!

Another amazing part of the farm was its strategic location. Not only were you surrounded by pastures of greens on top of a hill, Lake Te Anau was also in plain sight. Further to this, the view from the well placed roof window above our beds was simply amazing. The shooting stars we saw at night were simply icing on the cake.

I will highly reccommend people to stay minimum 2 nights on the farm. Personally, I felt like moving in with them! A tip for you, should you wish to go to Milford sound, it is cheaper to hop on the bus from Te Anau rather than queenstown. Do spend one full day on the farm. It is definitely worthwhile. The accommodation, location and service really makes it a MUST STAY in New Zealand.

Win and Henrik, in case you guys are reading this, thank you so much for this wonderful farmstay. we had such a wonderful experience there that whenever anyone ask me how was my New Zealand trip, DUSKY RIDGES will be the first thing on my mind.
