Avon House Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #13 of 29 Te Anau B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 24, 2013

As part of our journey to Milford Sound, my husband and I decided to stop in Te Anau for a night and we did not regret it! While it's a small town, the crowds are friendly, views are beautiful and there are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars to unwind at. We were especially impressed by the Avon House - a small B&B tucked away in the residential area of Te Anau. Despite its location, the B&B was only five minutes walk away from the central town area and 10 minutes away from the harbour.

It is also run by the most lovely and warm couple one could ever meet - John & Aloma! They ensured that all our needs were well taken cared of and that we were never hungry. We stayed in the loft room and it was very beautiful - from the high ceilings to the gorgeous decor. Even though we didn't have an en suite bathroom, the common toilet and shower was just down the hallway and always spotless! Aloma was quite the cook as well - her breakfast spread was so delicious and fresh...and a large majority of the produce came from their own garden!

For the price we paid, the Avon House was definitely more than we could ask for! Highly recommended to everyone.

We stayed at Avon House for 2 nights. We had a warm welcome from Aloma and garage space for our Motorcycle. Avon House is a beautiful house set in a lovely pretty matured garden. Accommodation is very quiet and comfortable, its just a short walk from the town centre, with plenty of restaurants. Te Anau is a beautiful place to spend sometime. Aloma made us feel really at home, lots of help and advice, even booked our Milford sound trip, and our next accommodation in Wanaka, and with her knowledge and information we booked with another B & B in Picton later. John was away when we stayed, with his love of motorcycles and ours we would of loved to of met him. Maybe next time!
Aloma always had the kettle on with a cookie or cake, much appreciated, we settled in just like home. We'd have a great continental breakfast which would set us up for the day. Aloma's a great host, lovely person, and very caring, you won't be disappointed if you stay here!
Thank you X

We stayed at Avon house for Three nights. Aloma and John opened their home to us and we very quickly settled in. They are wonderful hosts who are very resourceful and can give really good advice to help you make the most of your time.
Their home is very comfortable with everything laid on that you might need. There is always a cuppa on the go when you need it and the home baking is great.
Breakfast is continental style with plenty of choice and as much as you can eat.
John and Aloma are two exceptional caring people and it was a privilege to spend time with them. Thank you for a lovely few days. Just wish we had had longer.

Room Tip: Doesn't matter. Just a nice place to stay.

If like me you are interested in getting to know your hosts (rather than them simply providing a service) then you wont be disappointed if you go and stay with John and Aloma. John and Aloma have lived and worked in the area for many years and are really useful sources of information on where to go and what to see. They are very welcoming and were willing to go the extra mile to help make our stay a really special one. Nothing was too much trouble, whether it was washing my jumper or providing extra food for our lunch box. Aloma's cakes are also lovely. Highly recommended.

My son and I stayed here after walking one of the tracks in Fiordland. Just what the doctor ordered! A quiet, comfortable night's sleep (after several nights in crowded bunkrooms where some of the other trampers snored). A good, hot shower. An excellent breakfast. As another reviewer has commented, John and Aloma were very helpful even before our arrival, providing information on transport connections. The guesthouse is in a quiet location but within easy walking distance of the town centre. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to friends without hesitation.

You couldn't ask for better hosts than John and Aloma! They've been in the area for years, know everyone (tour operators, boat capitans, helicopter pilots) and will steer you in the right direction for everything from dinner to roadside lookouts and helicopter tours. Their home is very comfortable and they make you feel so welcome! This is the place to stay!

John and Aloma are one of those people who are willing to go the extra mile to make you feel at home during your stay with them. Even prior to our arrival at Avon House, John and Aloma were extremely helpful in providing tips on the attractions to visit in Te Anau and in the nearby fjordland national park. Upon arrival, we realised that John, who was driving up to the house as we arrived, had just taken a trip specially to the Te Anau town centre, worried that we might not know our way to his place upon arrival. And when my friends were worried about being underdressed in the colder than usual summar weather in our forage into the fjordland national park and the milford sounds, John and Aloma were quick to offer us their windbreakers and coats to ensure that we were warm enough for our trip. All of these are truly hallmarks of the great hosts that John and Aloma are.

Avon House itself is beautiful. John and Aloma have clearly put in much effort in taking care of their garden, and as it was the start of summer when we stayed with them, many of the flowers were in bloom and the mixture of colours was simply amazing. The interior of the house was cosy as well - there is even a tradtional fireplace which John will use in the mornings when the weather turns chilly!

For lotr fans, you are in for an even greater treat - John was present for a few weeks during the filming of the movie in the fjordland area, and has a great many stories to tell of his experiences and those secret lotr filming locations that you might not even know about without his guidance.

All in all, if you are looking for a homely B&B with wonderful hosts, look no further than Avon House!
