I have mixed feelings about this place. Yes, it’s fairly remote, so it’s exempt from some of the usual expectations. Our cabin (the larger on offer) was comfortable and warm and relatively well equipped. We’re not fans of wet rooms, but there’s no denying that the shower was a godsend after a day of hiking – the water hot and plentiful.
However, our unit lacked a few things that would have really come in handy during our three night stay. 1) A pair of scissors to cut open those packets of pre-cooked rice and soup purchased for self catering , 2) A fresh dishwashing cloth instead of the soured one we were given and 3) Access to a clean serviceable BBQ, instead of the one shared amongst six units, which was covered in a white mold (apparently ‘winterized’).
Having said that, the location is perfect for exploring Milford Sound, the Hollyford Valley and countless hiking tracks that are otherwise only accessible from campsites or by driving in from Te Anau.
