“Peaceful, comfortable stay close to Milford Sound”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

After reading the other reviews I think we are talking about two different age cabins. The one we stayed in was new, accessible, very clean and comfortable. We had a wonderful stay. Knobs Flat is very easy to find and also always accessible unlike Milford Sound where the road is closed in the evening due to landslide potential. It is an easy drive to hikes and the sounds but while the whole area is gorgeous, Knobs Flat, set in a peaceful mountain meadow is blissfully separate from the buses and bustle of Milford Sound. Even if the prices were the same, I would prefer Knobs Flat. The cabin we stayed in had a large bathroom with excellent shower, comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen. (Buy your groceries on your way there!) It has an excellent supplemental heater for cool mornings and wonderful windows with spectacular views. We thoroughly enjoyed our hikes to Lake Marian and Key Summit as well as many shorter walks and the nature cruise. All are short drives from Knobs Flat and all easily done during our two night stay.

I don´t know whether I can recommend this Hotel. The owner was very nice, the location is beautiful but our room was very dirty. They were a lot!! of dead sandflys (and other insects) on the window board and smashed in the curtions and about the same amount alive in our room. Of couse the Units are built in nature but we could at least expect not to find so many dead insects. The kitchen was pretty old but alright. The beds were very good and comfortable! And the bathroom was clean.
It is too expensive for this quality but a great stop between Te Anau and Milford Sound.
Next time, I would try the Hotel right next to the Milford Sound but it is a lot more expensive.

2 star (serviced cabin) 5 /10 , 9 / 10 view.
Good service , PC was very helpful.
Nothing fancy but could't fault what they had. Good for a serviced appartment style hotel.
Single room cabin style. Kitchen , dinning and beds. Seperate shower / bathroom.
Close to Milford Sound (55 mins)

Room Tip: All the cabins seemed to be equal in design. GPS Co-ordinates 44 deg 58 min 38 sec South by 168 deg...

Stayed in a cabin here in early 2011. We were delighted by the warmth of the welcome despite the terrible mist and drizzle. So, we were unable to enjoy looking at the view in the evening, but in the morning we were able to see the peaks and the Eglinton River Valley really well. The remoteness of the place was brilliant.

The cabin was well equipped with food for our overnight stay, was warm and the bed and bathroom excellent.

When thinking of travelling to Milford Sound for the day, consider staying here on the way out, or back - it's so much better than the long drive back to Te Anau and cheaper than saying at MIlford Sound itself.

After a 5 hour drive from Makaroa, my husband and I, 64 and 65, were greeted by PC who offered to show us the local waterfall. He helped us cross a 10 - 12' wide stream which was flowing rapidly due to 30" of recent rains that had also caused landslides and bridges to fall. He patiently led us through the moss covered forest to a lovely waterfall. After a long day of driving, it was stress relieving walk and we enjoyed seeing moss literally covering every living plant and tree. PC was knowledgable and helpful about everything we asked. We appreciated that we could recycle, cook, control our own heat, enjoy a fully equipped kitchen, shower, bed, and be near Milford Sound. Husband got up at 2AM to enjoy the brightly lit southern sky and saw the milky way clearly, a rare opportunity in USA where light saturation means it is difficult to observe even on a clear night. We applaud PC for setting a great example of how you can run a comfortable hotel business and also your minimize environmental impact. If you desire only the comforts you need and if you can forgo the parking garages, cement driveways, fancy bars, grand foyers of a five star hotel, you will enjoy this eco friendly place. Go out and enjoy the moss covered forest, the clear nights and the scenery. No TV. PC will let you use his internet. I hope he will consider adding Internet use for his guests because I am addicted to a daily news and email update. Everything else was great and PC is a great role model for following your dream.

We learned the hard way that the gates to Milford can close in the rain. After driving all the way to the closed gate, we looked for the closest place to stay while waiting for the gates to re-open, and stumbled across Knob's Flat which had had a cancellation. After waiting through the rain for two days we finally were able to drive into stay at Milford Lodge where we were only able to get a dorm-style room (aka a hostel). If we were to go back to Milford, we'd stay at Knob's Flat again -- it's location has great access to hikes that are just outside of Milford, and the accommodations were comfortable with nice-sized kitchens. We were not impressed by the Milford Lodge -- it's website and travel books make it sound nicer than it is. You also don't need to stay overnight in Milford - just make it a day trip and stay outside the gates.

This is a great place to get away from it all and explore the natural beauty of the area. The hosts are welcoming and very knowledgable and we really appreciated the hot water bottles. The room was clean and tidy.
