“Definitely stay overnight”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

Nice little town to stay for a couple of nights. It's a good base for exploring the region - the Sounds, the hiking trails, the Glow worm caves, and strolling along the lake side. Easy walk to shops, wild life park, information centre. Lovely mountain views. Would recommend a stop here and I would certainly return to do more in this area.

Extremely nice views, clear water, you can walk along the lake or you can do activities like boating, sailing, even a plan is available for scenic views.

“Water, mountains, sky”

Beautiful from all angles. New Zealand is lucky to have so much natural beauty. Hated seeing the old steamer and its belching smoke though.

“You must stop at least overnight in Te Anau”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

We have always preferred Te Anau to other lakeside tourist spots. http://www.te-anau.nz.com/ Sadly many people are rushed thru to Milford & don't get to enjoy the beauty of this area with its numerous walks & places to explore. There's an excellent Info Centre as you head into town, Don't miss the bird sanctuary on the way to Manapouri.- no charge. The glow-worm caves are also a must - this includes a boat trip across the Lake.
If you can afford the higher cost, many tourists have told us the trip to Doubtful Sound is better than Milford - & that is the trip we take visitors on.
You can drive to Milford but check bus times & try to be ahead of them. And watch out for sandflies :-)
Plenty of good eating places or grocery stores.
Camping grounds both in Te Anau & at Lake Manapouri where you catch the boat for Doubtful Sound

“Apt base to explore Fiordland”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

This is a pretty lake, big and beautiful with plenty of mountains in the back ground. There are a number of activities that you could plan, boating, sailing, treks around the lakeside or take a sea plane for an aerial view. Depending on the lighting the views could be dramatic around sunset/sunrise. The town is small and sweet and there are several accommodation options to pick. There are numerous restaurants to choose from. On the whole this is a fine place to stay over and explore the other attractions of fiordland. Do consider this place especially if you are headed for Milford Sound.
