It truly was a house made of wood, beautiful view, lovely hosts, close to good restaurants and close to starting off places for tours.

Room Tip: All rooms are great!

This was my first visit to New Zealand. The folks at House of Wood immediately made me feel welcome and it was quite similar to feeling at home. I really appreciated the interaction with them. I did not feel "here it is contact us if you want anything". Casual conversation enable me to really get to know NZ. They were most helpful with refining my trip expecially with booking local attractions. Both are excellent ambassadors for New Zealand. I rate them to be the highest I could rate. With more guests, parking could be difficult.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be excellent.

Clean rooms, quiet, generous breakfast (not extra), nicely decorated. Not the most central but still only a 5 min walk to Lake, two blocks from shops and restaurants. Good value for money.

We chose to stay in Te Anau because it was close to Doubtful Sound. Last minute change of reservation at House of Wood worked out well despite staying in the one room without a private bath. Bathroom down the hall was impeccably clean, bathrobes were provided in the room. Wish we would have been planning more time in Te Anau because it was a beautiful little town with a wonderful waterfront.

We used Te Anau as the base for our trip to Milford Sound. Merele and Cliff make you very welcome at the House of Wood. Although the rooms are not particularly spacious (compared with similar accommodation elsewhere in NZ), they are very comfortable indeed and quite unique - as is the house itself.. Friendly tasty breakfasts with other guests round the kitchen table. Merle helped us fine tune our Milford Trip with helpful suggestions. On our return Merle suggested that we might like to go to the bonfire and New Year's Eve fireworks in the park. Very enjoyable, live music and tasty hot dogs c/o the local Lions Club. An added bonus was that Merle and Cliff joined us. House of Wood is in a quiet street but only 2 minutes stroll from the shops and restaurants.

In common with the last reviewer I have to say that we disagree with the review written by trevie52. We found the house most interesting - it really is made of wood, with all walls and ceilings being wood panelled. Our room was fine, it had a fridge plus tea/coffee making facilities and separate (admittedly small) rooms for shower & WC, plus access to the balcony with views of the mountains. Breakfast was substantial and tasty and we found Merle an excellent hostess. OK, we didn't have a power shower and freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast but we wouldn't have expected that for the price.

Eek! Just got home from our 25 day trip around the South Island, and couldn't believe the most recent review of House of Wood (by trevie152). We found instead a charming house, with terrific hosts. The house is made of wood (as most are, where we come from) - but it was beautifully done - built with class, and with furnishings to match. Our hostess Merle gave great advice on things to do and see, and where to eat, and served a delicious breakfast both mornings we stayed there. Our room was ensuite, and at a terrific price for this touristy part of New Zealand. We would not hesitate to recommend it to our friends, and will stay there again when we revisit Te Anau.
