This sanctuary is a gem. Just off the Manapouri Highway it is apparently run by the Department of Conservation but grateful for donations, so make sure you leave a few dollars there. There are a couple of aviaries where injured birds are cared for, but the star of them all must be the brightly colored Takahe, of which they keep two. Come there at feeding time in the morning and get a glimpse of one of the rarest (and most beautiful) birds in then world, which was supposed to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1948.
This place deserves the support of all travellers in this region!

It looks like feeding time (in the morning) or around dusk might give you a better chance of seeing the birds. The rest of the time, they often hide. There were some birds singing and flying about and I saw one of the takahe pottering about but it was all over pretty quick. Easy to find if you're walking along the lakefront.

This is a nice quiet spot to walk around in the evenings. Basically, you just park the car and start going thru the various aviaries, the largest of which is the takahe enclosure. Feeding time is at 9:30am so we missed that, but we managed to spot the takahe just the same, which is a treat. Do drop in a $1 coin as a donation to keep them going.

This sanctuary is so well laid out and so peaceful with a lovely backdrop of scenery
It is free to get in but you make a donation in various boxes dotted around
There are plenty of birds to see all with informative pics etc and you can sit at little benches dotted around
They leave tubs of duck food and actual,y ask you to feed the ducks they were so tame
Defo call in here on way to lake manapouri
They deserve your support

If you go when they are feeding the birds you are in for a treat. Got a chance to see the birds up close and to feed some. Also the knowledge that the local DOC workers have was superb.
