We booked an overnight cruise on doubtful sound. It was really expensive and I had high expecations. But I was not disappointed! It was a very good tour that I can recommend.
A bus took us from Te Anau to Lake Manapouri. There we crossed the lake by boat and went with another bus to the Fjordland Navigator.
There we were welcomed by a nice and helpful crew. After a short introduction we were brought to our cabins and started our journey on the sound.
In the afternoon we had the chance to do kayaking, swimming or a trip with a small boat.
During the whole journey there was a nature guide who explained what we were seeing.
In the evening we had a fantastic dinner and on the next morning a good breakfast. We got back to the harbour at around 10 am.
On the first day it rained nearly all the day. But it was amazing to see the waterfalls caused from the rain.
The views on the sound were very impressive. It is a beautiful and dramatic landscape.

We did 3 trips with Real Journeys and loved each & every one of them. The Te Anau Glow Worm caves trip was fantastic. Lovely cruise on the Te Anau lake then up to the caves themselves. The real journey's staff were fantastic, very efficient & friendly. Our recommendation is to do afternoon trips rather than morning (unless you go at 8am - well before the rush at 10am). Going outside the peak times makes it much more comfortable on the boat and in the cave. This is a really good thing to do in Te Anau & we highly recommend this trip to see the glow worms. We also highly recommend Real Journeys. They are an extremely well organised company, family owned too I believe. They should be very proud of their product!

The glow worms cave were the coolest thing i had seen on our trip so far the only thing that let it down a little was no photos because of the fall rate still the glow worms with there glowing butt was cool i would do it again.

D sound is the must do for me apart from getting up at six in the morning to go on the real journeys boat to cross lake manapouri we arrived at the visitors centre we hoped on two buses which took us on a d.o.c. Owned road we got on another real journeys boat and traveled the d sound in-between times we saw a mixture of dolphins, seals, shags, sea birds and water falls ect

Very surprised by all the negativity here as we had a great cruise and all of the staff was polite, friendly, informative and helpful. Maybe it was because of Christmas mood but we really could not have had more pleasant encounter. The trip itself was peaceful, majestic & nice. Compared to Doubtful sound we thought it was a bit more impressive as the Fiord makes a bigger impression while narrower & taller. Saw seals, loads of waterfalls (up close), only thing we did not see was dolphins. We ordered Obento lunch which was surprisingly good quality & tasty.
