My wife and I were lucky enough to find Peter and Iris' Sails Ashore from far away California and we're so happy we did. The lodging was comfortable, great facilities including bed, bathroom, and guest breakfast area that had a spectacular view of birds, harbor, and the rising sun (actually 2/3 mornings). Peter is a wealth of information on Stewart and Ulva, having been there since the beginning of its planning and management. A tour by him is inclusive of your stay and involved energetic descriptions of the biomass and especially the birds. Sorry there weren't saddlebacks seen, nor Kiwi. Peter also regales with stories of early NZ, including helicopter drops on deer, to early forestry. Iris is a nurse with much civic pride in Stewart's structure and was charming in her descriptions of the politics and people of the Southland. We'd go back in a heartbeat. The Taites, Peter and Iris, made Stewart come alive and would like to spend weeks with Peter and Iris touring the whole Island and perhaps that elusive "beach" Kiwi making an appearance.

Room Tip: Tour to Ulva exception with Peter, don't go with anyone else. Tour of the Island less compellin...

Possibly the best holiday we have had. Iris and Peter were great hosts, and made us feel very welcome. One major benefit of staying with them was the chance to talk with true 'locals' who could tell us so much about the history and nature of Stewart Island. The trip to Ulva is a must for anyone interested in native plants and birdlife - we had South Island Robins pecking at our shoelaces, wekas under our feet and saw saddlebacks and a yellowhead. We didn't even bother trying to count the native pigeons, tuis, kaka, etc, we saw on both Stewart and Ulva.
Sails Ashore is not cheap, but is great value for money - excellent beds, excellent breakfast, the afternoon tea was substantial with a good variety (much locally sourced, or from their own garden). We walked many tracks (about 40km over 4 days, and we are nopt hikers!), and afternoon tea on our return was always very appreciated. The bonus of being with Peter (20 years with DOC, many years fishing, expert boatie with a large yacht they have chartered from the Southern Ocean to the Pacific Islands) who was so interesting and informative, and Iris who could tell us about the people and history of the island, made this a very special holiday.
Check out their website and webcam.

When you stay on Stewart Island the only place for you is Sails Ashore. Peter and Iris proved the consummate and ever amenable hosts, amid splendid surroundings and views. The room was spacious and comfortable, breakfasts and snacks abundant and delicious, and the guests lounge was beautifully equipped and had splendid views of the large gardens (with resident kakas, tuis and silvereyes), harbour and the straits.
The trip to Ulva Island, whence we were taken by Peter in his yacht, was one of the most memorable birdwatching trips I can recall. His depth of knowledge, concern for the environment and enthusiasm were obvious. A five-star experience!

Sails Ashore combines wonderful accommodation, with fantastic hosts and the added perk of the trip included to Ulva Island. It would be easy to miss this as there is so much to see on Stewart Island but the trip to Ulva was a highlight of my stay. Peter Tait knew every little detail about the Island and its birds and plants. I'm not a bird watcher but I was fascinated. The rooms themsleves are beautifully fitted, and I loved the little touches like the homemade biscuits, the underfloor heating and Iris popping in to put the electric blanket on. Sails ashore is up on a hill and the views are breathtaking,

We were really impressed with tours by Sails Ashore, Iris & Peter Tait. Didn't know what to expect going to Stewart Island but their local knowledge of history, native birds & trees blew us away.
There's a range of accommodation available in Oban, the township & surrounding area. Or just go for the day.
We flew over but you can take the ferry.
A wonderful place to relax & see native NZ
