My wife and I travelled from Bluff to Stewart Island via the sea ferry operated by Stewart Island Experience. This company also operates the lodge and a local tour. In consequence they provide a seamless transport from the wharf to the lodge and also the return trip when your visit is over.

The transport from the wharf to the lodge (and return) is a godsend as, as noted by others, there is a steep hill that needs to be ascended before reaching the lodge and that would prove very onerous if you walked to the lodge towing a suitcase behind you.

The lodge is located on the slope of a hill overlooking Oban village and Half Moon Bay.

From the time you arrive until you leave you are so well looked after. Chris was very welcoming and checked us in with a minimum of fuss and effort. This was followed by a guided tour during which Chris explained the lounge and breakfast area layout and procedures before taking us to our room.

"Our" room overlooked Oban and the bay. There was a combined lounge/bedroom area with two comfortable easy chairs. The bed was very comfortable. The room was very efficiently heated.

Next to the lounge/bedroom was a "dressing room" which also contained a shelf and a separate pull out tray on which to place suitcases. Other motels could well take a lesson from here on providing suitcase space. The "dressing room" also contained tea/coffee making facilities and a small refrigerator.

At the rear of the unit is the bathroom which includes a bath, toilet and walk-in, wet-floor area shower.

Every room was immaculately clean. It is quiet and peaceful.

There are no cooking facilities in the rooms. If guests wish to cook then they can avail themselves of the kitchen facilities that adjoin the lounge/breakfast area.

A continental breakfast is provided between 7:00 - 9:00 am. This comprised an assortment of cereal mixes, fruit and yoghurts. Guests make their own tea/coffee and toast.

A very special moment was a visit from a flock of four Kaka (a New Zealand native parrot - see pics). These four, while living wild, are regular visitors to the lodge (shows they have good taste) and in consequence can be very closely approached. One even made an experimental peck at my toe while I was taking photographs.

This location is an island off the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a small isolated community of very friendly and community minded people. Their attitude provides a very timely reminder of what we should all be doing ion our relationship to others.

Apart from fish/shellfish farming most employment is centered on environmental acitivities so the people are very conservation minded.

Overall a great experience made extra special by the staff. Most definitely a "stay again" place.

Room tip: There are only 6 rooms and all face over Half Moon Bay. It would be hard to distinguish the best.

Trevor F, Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review for other travellers to read. It sounds as if all elements of your stay added up to a “great experience”. We will pass on your comments to all the staff involved. Nice to see you had a welcoming party of four Kaka too ! Kind regards Stewart Island Lodge

An awesome experience including being met at the ferry by Beavan to the lovely welcome from Lisa at the Lodge. Lisa made us feel most welcome and special and was very helpful suggesting and arranging for our Island experiences. The food choices for the continental breakfast was extensive and yummy. Thank you Lisa.Very comfortable and a quiet nights stay.Fabulous place to stay, highly recommended. We will return.

Lisa, the proprietress is the fount of all the knowledge you need to have about the island, and then some. The accommodation is modern, very well equipped and spotlessly clean and the views are splendid from all the rooms. You may well be visited by a friendly Kaka that appears on the balcony from time to time.

A lavish continental breakfast is served in the morning and there is tea and coffee available at any time in the lodge or in your room. There is a communal kitchen area where you can do some cooking if you wish and tea, coffee and snacks are available at all times.

It is a short walk into Oban village and a longer one coming back up a very steep hill. So you are bound to get plenty of exercise. The Lodge will meet you at the ferry when you arrive, so you do not have to lug your bags up the hill.

Room tip: Rooms look identical - all have fabulous view

This is the perfect place to stay in New Zealand. It is close to the ferry, close to all the places to eat and offers up an amazing view.
It is also close to the beginning of the coastal walk around the island. Lisa was very friendly and helpful when my shark trip was cancelled due to weather. I would strongly recommend you staying here. The breakfast was simple but good and fresh.
Be advised that it is up a very steep hill so if you are unfit, or have trouble walking or hiking this would probably not be the best place for you to stay. The Wifi is not great but you probably shouldn't be on Stewart Island if this is important to you.

This is our second time in as many months staying at the lodge, both times Lisa had made us feel like family. She has both times given great advice on what to do , and made last minute bookings (due to cancelled excursions). Nothing was too hard or too much trouble.
Stewart Island Lodge is positioned walking distance to restaurants and bars and commands unequalled views from all rooms of one of New Zealand's most stunning vistas. The only negative is the 50m hill climb up from Oban, make sure your pacemaker is fully charged before the walk home.
If, as we are you like photography, Stewart Island bird life is amazing and not to be missed and Stewart Island lodge is the pick of places to stay.
Thanks Lisa, see you next time.
