Stayed here for a week on a "business" trip (more so for school though) and had a good time. The restaurant in this hotel makes very good quality food. The receptionist is nice as well. However, the two biggest things I have to tell you is that 1.) If you are a solo traveler, you will get a tiny room. Super tiny. As someone who has traveled across a few continents, this is the smallest hotel room I've stayed at in a Western country, so if you are claustrophobic, you may want to request a two person room. 2.) The internet is really expensive. If this place had free wifi, it would be awesome. In a week I spent $60 on internet. For reference, it's $10 for 100 megabytes. Reasonable if you only check your email once a day but not ideal at all if you need the internet to work on business matters. However, in saying that, once you buy the internet it works fast and I haven't has any problems with it.

Room Tip: It is best not to come to Stewart Island in winter. Literally almost every business closes.

We had a great stay in South Sea Hotel last week. Place is clean and comfortable run more as a hostel than a hotel but great never the less.
Pub below is a scream and you have to be there for Sunday Quiz Night, awesome.
Restaurant is serving great food and relatively cheap comparing to prices in bigger NZ cities.
I would recommend sitting outside with a pint of the cold beer and watch the world go by.
Thanks you South Sea Hotel

Room Tip: No Swimming Pool or Fitness Centre. All rooms are above the Pub so expect some noise from downstairs...

We stayed here 3 nights. Our room was disappointing, at the back and over looking tin roofs. Reception said that they couldn't move us unless we paid extra. We then went off for the rest of the day and also had the Kiwi trip at night, not returning until 12.45am. As soon as we went into the room we noticed straight away that the room was buzzing with noise from generators/motors. In short we didn't get a wink of sleep. Now we knew why there were ear plugs on the dresser!! When we went down to breakfast we told reception that we hadn't slept because of the noise, she said " that's what the ear plugs are for " At that point we were about to ask for the manager but the receptionist said she would move us to a quieter part of the hotel, The Cottage. What a difference. Everything was perfect. The meals are splendid and if you are there on Friday evening, they put Friday night platters on the tables in the bar for free. They are piled with lots of nibbles including cod bites, sausage rolls, chips etc.
So although we had a bad start at this hotel, we would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Don't have the noisy room 14. The Cottage have tea & coffee facilities.

We spent a few hours each day ensuring the service was good the beer cold. Neither disappoint.

We ate very well and thoroughly enjoyed the trivia night - and they are not necessarily easy questions however you will have to be on your toes to master the locals. The MC is an Island character and mosses can she swear. However it is all in good humour and makes for a thoroughly enjoyable night.

There is an outdoor smoking area which looks over Half Moon Bay. A view from heaven.

Make the effort and enjoy a wonderful island retreat full of amazing natural wonders. Definitely visit Ulva Island.

We stayed at South Sea Hotel for one night before setting off for the Raikura Track, The rooms had a comfortable queen bed, central heating and shared bathroom facilities, although there was a sink in the room too. It's in a great spot in Oban with lovely views to the water, the food is great we had the blue cod and chips, the chowder too was a favorite. This is a great little kiwi hotel, simple, not flash but wonderful all the same. If you are doing a hike you can shower in the hotel for $5 when you get back and they have lockers to store your stuff while you hike. I also loved how they had earplugs in the room, came in really handy for the huts on the hike. Would definitely recommend

Room Tip: Double looking over water

Just a really nice, simple hotel. Nothing flash, but everything perfect.
Visited during the quiet season - so facilities were still getting up and running (only a couple of hours for dinner service in the Hotel restaurant), but the service was good, and the locals really make the place something special.
