“A home from home on Stewart island”
Reviewed February 19, 2012

Glendaruel is perfectly situated between Halfmoon Bay and Golden Bay, so that it is an easy walk either to the village of Oban on one side, or water taxis to the wildlife sanctuary of Ulva Island on the other. My room was extremely comfortable, looking out onto a beautiful garden frequented by kaka parrots, and breakfast was excellent. Raylene could not have been more helpful. She recommended walks, booked tours (including the magical experience of going out to see kiwi by night), lent me a knapsack and water bottle, and gave me a lift to the beginning of a walk - in short did everything to make my holiday perfect. There is lots to do on the island, especially for walkers, birders or fishermen, so I recommend a stay of at least five days if possible.

We spent two nights here with Raylene and MacPherson, the dog. Raylene was an excellent host, picking us up in the pouring rain and serving us a hot coffee at the end of a long day. She also helped guide us to a kiwi spotting tour and water taxi over to Ulva Island. The rooms are quite large and they have a nice view onto the garden which contains many bird including Kakas that eat out of the palm of your hand. Breakfast were quite large which helped before long day of hiking. It is a special place on a special island. Definitely plan at least two nights here as it rains a lot and the pace of life is much slower...

Glendaruel is a Stewart Island B&B surrounded by native bush alive with Kaka, Kereru, Tui, Kakariki and other birds. Many of these native birds are rare on the New Zealand mainland but at Glendaruel you can see as many of these birds from the breakfast table as you will see in a days walk along the Rakiura Track. Glendaruel is in a quiet part of Oban but is easy walking to the town centre as well as to the Golden Bay jetty where the trips to Ulva Island depart.
Guest rooms are spacious, comfortable and well-appointed and Raelene Waddell is an interesting and thoughtful host. She provided a long list of things to see and do before we arrived and is knowledgeable on Stewart Island history and settlement.
The evening kiwi-spotting trip to Ocean Beach (four kiwis seen) was the highlight of our visit to Stewart Island.
Glendaruel is one of the most naturally peaceful places we have stayed in a long time and made our week on Stewart Island most memorable.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights at Glendaruel. Before we had even arrived Raylene had been most helpful in making sure we had a booking for a guided walk on Ulva Isalnd. Breakfast was a treat with delicious homemade yogurt, and rhubarb from her garden followed by any combination of cooked items you desired. Watching the Kereru and tuis flying in and out of the bush surrounding the property was a bonus. Raylene was very helpful, providing useful information on eating places and walks and even provided extra waterproof clothing which was very much appreciated. Glendaruel will definitely be our choice of accomodation if we return to Stewart Isalnd.

Raylene was a wonderful host for our stay on Stewart Island. She was especially helpful finding the best bird guides on Stewart and Ulva Islands. We certainly enjoyed watching the Kakas that flew around her property. It was great fun, wish we could have stayed longer.

We stayed for 3 nights at Glendaruel but it seemed much longer. The house is superbly situated on top of a small hill with a great view of Golden Bay from the guest lounge on the upper floor. Oban is about 10 minutes walk one way, the Ulva Island water taxis about 5 minutes in the other direction.

The owner Raylene can’t do enough for you – from booking trips before you get there, to picking you up at the airport, she is the perfect host. We stayed in the downstairs room which was spotless with a really comfortable bed. Breakfast was a lovely with a choice of continental or Raylene will cook whatever you would like. We had an evening meal with Raylene which I would highly recommend – a really enjoyable evening

The balcony on the upper floor has regular visits from the local Kaka who always enjoy a peanut or two. The views of Golden Bay and the bush are stunning with opportunities to see lots of the local birdlife.

We did a 2 week trip around the south island and stewart island was the second last leg. We stayed in a series of bed and breakfasts and motels recommended by trip advisor during this trip and this bed and breakfast was the best out of all. The place is set on top of a small hill in Oban and there is a great view of Golden Bay from the common living room. The B and B has 2 guest rooms and if you are lucky enough to get the one on the upper floor you will basically have the whole floor including the common living room right outside your door. The balcony on this floor is also where Kakas visit regularly looking for peanuts that Raylene has stored for them. Guests can grab a few and the Kaka will eat them right out of your hand.
We had the room on the ground floor with access to the upstairs liing room. The bed was huge and very comfortable and the bathroom was sparkling clean. Raylene has a continental spread for breakfast and also cooked us up some eggs every day. Upto 100 MB of wireless internet access is also included with the stay. She called and made bookings for us. We decided to stay an extra night and she rescheduled the ferry for us. SInce we were there for new years eve she even invited us to a BBQ she was having with her neighbours.
Over all a great base to experience friendly and beautiful Stewart Island.

Room Tip: Upstairs room is more secluded

Glendaruel, nestled between Halfmoon Bay and Golden Bay, is ideally situated to help you maximise your time here. Overlooking Paterson Inlet and Ulva Island, it is bordered on two sides by uninterrupted vistas of native forest, alive with birdsong. The village of Oban on one side and the water taxis to Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary on the other are but a few minutes walk away.Glendaruel garden, a fusion of native and exotic plantings, extends over several levels and melds into the forest, which New Zealanders call ‘the bush’. The garden has featured in magazines (New Zealand Gardener, Weekend Gardener and My Home and Garden) and in the book, Great Gardens of New Zealand, by Derek Fell.Birds love it! Tui and kaka dispute the treetops, weka and, increasingly, kiwi patrol the paths. What a thrill it was when a Department of Conservation worker pointed out to me that a kiwi had left his/her calling card in the middle of one of my garden paths! As for me, I love gardening, kayaking, cooking, travelling and languages. Stewart Island has been a preferred holiday destination for almost all my life and my permanent home since 2000. Helping you to make the most of your time on this beautiful island is my focus.
