Owner description: Stewart Island Experience operates daily ferry service between Bluff and Stewart Island all year around. Stewart Island is New Zealand's ultimate eco-tourism destination and the location of Rakiura National Park. During the one hour ferry crossing, keep a look out for the Mollymawks (Albatross) that often follow the vessel. Daily coach connections operate between Bluff and Invercargill, and in summer also to Te Anau and Queenstown (summer only).

From the moment we phoned to find out about the Ferry sailings, till we disembarked in Bluff again, we never met a negative person It was as though they wake up with a smile on their face and a happy disposition. The ladies in the booking office in Bluff made us feel so important, the Captain of the Real Journeys Ferry was so informative and calming for me, I was able to chat to him, as I was a bit apprehensive about the crossing, but the sea was kind and the trip was great. Our welcome to the Island was very friendly and nothing changed from that time on. We didn't do any of the trips, this time, as it was such lovely weather we just walked every which way, and listened to the bird life which was amazing, we explored every little road, and chatted to many of the lovely locals, we even got invited to dinner at one house!! The Museum we visited was fantastic, and kept us entertained for ages, we shopped till we dropped, not many shops, but such lovely staff we just stayed and shopped. We were cross we took so much food over with us, as there was no need to do so as the Four Sq shop was so well stocked, the staff so friendly, and the prices so kind, with everything one could ever need, and apart from that, we just ate out anyway, as it was so much fun talking to the locals. Thank you Stewart Island, I will certainly send all my guests to visit with you, Gay @ Riverton Bed and Breakfast.

Check in is a bit spartan and the area rather industrial but the service was friendly and efficient. The parking arrangements were reasonably good and close by. The ferry itself was modern and comfortable with friendly staff. The sea state for the crossing was "interesting" but the vessel coped with it well.

This is just shocking, I can fly anywhere in NZ for less than this, $75 each way! So, for a family of 6 for a few hours it is going to cost over $600 for a day trip. No way!

Hello John
Thank you for your feedback.
Like most companies - including airlines - we base our pricing on volumes and running costs. That said we also do our absolute best to make the fares as reasonable as possible in order to increase volumes, but given Stewart Island's remote location this is a constant balancing act.
We do also offer compelling promotional programmes and incentives to visit the Island and at present have a Kids Go Free offer until 13 October. Feel free to call us or visit our Stewart Island Experience Website for further information. http://www.stewartislandexperience.co.nz/
Kind regards
Real Journeys

I've used the Stewart Island Ferry on all my three trips to Stewart Island and have never found a problem with them at all. One of my trips from Bluff was cancelled due to bad weather but i just booked it again for the next day, all good!
The trip across Foveaux Strait can be unpredictable like any stretch of water but do be prepared for it to be rough at anytime of the year but saying that i still think it's well worth the one hour trip no matter what the weather to get to the stunning Stewart Island.
I've always found all the ferry crew to be very helpful and friendly and on one trip just as we were approaching Stewart Island the skipper of the ferry spotted some fur seals on one of the smaller islands so he took a slight detour to let some of the passengers take some pictures of them which i thought was a very nice gesture from him.

This ferry ride is a definite board game / chill ride. Definitely has amazing views for photo op's and time and a half for a couple great board games with you friends!
