My husband and I just visited Queenstown for our honeymoon and decided we had to book a tour out to the Fiordlands and Milford Sound. After a bit of research and all the positive reviews we decided to book with BBQ bus - and we made a great decision! The morning of the tour, the bus picked us up at our hotel at 7:30 AM - Nigel was our tour guide, and right from the beginning he was friendly, funny and knowledgeable. We thought the long drive was going to be rough to get through, but Nigel made it so enjoyable, he knew so many fun and interesting facts about New Zealand and made it a point to get the whole bus involved in conversation - it was really great! Nigel really made this tour! We are lucky we had him as a guide.

The other thing we loved about this tour is the fact that it’s a small group, we saw so many massive buses with tons of people on them, the fact that tour was so personal made all the difference - and was worth every penny.

We would highly recommend booking your experience with tHe BBQ bus - we also highly recommend booking your ticket with the flight home from Milford sound.

Cheers
The Portland honeymooners

Make no mistake, you are in for a very long day with this tour, as Milford Sound is a long drive away. But you are rewarded with majestic scenery throughout the day, and really get to take in the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand. We were in New Zealand for 7 days, and this was our favorite day because of the beautiful scenery throughout the day.

Nigel, our tour guide, is both informative and funny at the same time. He will poke fun at everyone by the end of the day, and it makes the time go by quicker for sure. He prepares a BBQ lunch along the way that honestly exceeded my expectations...it was REALLY yummy!

And what can you say about Milford Sound...it has to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. We were extra lucky and had a close-up encounter with a Kea bird, and got to see the rare Fiordland Penguin on our cruise!

Highly recommend this day trip!

So hands down I’d say the Milford Sound BBQ Bus was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had.

If you’re traveling alone, with a group of friends, or family - I’d say choose this over any other tours leaving from Queenstown.

You leave Queenstown on a bus with 12 other strangers but return as acquaintances because your driver/guide/chef is a great people person.

Nigel was my driver and cook (yes!) and tour guide and he truly exemplifies the friendly New Zealand spirit.

Not only do you get 1x1 attention but he takes the time out to educate you about the things you’d never have a clue about.

As an American solo traveler this tour had the best balance of spontaneity (we all jumped out of the bus to take a pic of a Kia at the side of the road), punctuality (we were told we would arrive in Milford Sound at 2:30 and we got there at 2:29), along with a fantastic meal (we were told to keep an eye out for a bobcat - look don’t pet!).

If you go to Queenstown book this trip and ask for Nigel.

Give him a big fat tip because he deserves that and more.

Leave feeling like you’ve spent an entire day catered to you!

Although a very long bus ride from Queenstown (4 hours both ways), our driver (Nigel) was entertaining and we stopped plenty enough time for pictures, stretching, short stop in Te Anau. The Bar BQ lunch was good - my husband really loved the grilled lamb, and the vegetarian option was good as well. We had wanted to fly, but the flights are so often cancelled for weather this time of year, we didn't want to take the chance. Just as well, since the small Milford Sound airport was closed that day. The cruise around the Milford Sound was outstanding! Tea, coffee and small cookies offered (included) and the ship was smaller so we could get VERY close to the waterfalls.
DO NOT LET RAIN STOP YOU! We had a bit of a soggy day, but it made the waterfalls (100's of them) more beautiful. The bus was warm, and has large golf umbrellas, but do bring warm clothes and rain gear for the best viewing.

Incredible experience from start to finish. Nigel was our driver and he was amazing, made a point to get your name as soon as you stepped in the van. Throughout the trip he'd be asking you funny trivia questions about NZ using your name the whole time, made the whole day feel very personable.

Being in a smaller vehicle than a tour bus helps cut out a lot of the waiting time to reload at various touristy stops, and he sure can cook up a delicious BBQ lunch.

He really made the tour one to remember and this is probably the best way to see Milford Sound and the Fiordland National Park. Mirror Lake and the Chasm were great stops.

Nigel is a legend of a bloke. Took us to all the amazing spots tour buses couldn't reach, thoroughly recommend.

Highly recommended. From the start our guide, Graham, was excellent, full of local knowledge, entertaining and pretty mean BBQ chef. The trip was wonderful, despite the rain. I would definitively choose this over a large coach tour.

A cosy little bus that fits 15 passengers seemed like the perfect way to see the Milford Sound and the surrounding scenery, I just wasn't prepared for the six hour bus trip just to get there!

The bus driver Rob gave very interesting commentary and used just the right amount of humour!
Unfortunately, the day we toured, the boat that we were supposed to cruise on was out of order, therefore no barbeque. We instead boarded a large boat and had a smorgasbord lunch instead which was also quite tasty.

The scenery is beautiful but it's a very long day. My tip - make sure you either bring along plenty of snacks, or make sure you purchase some food at the stop at TeAnau, as it will be another 4 hours until you reach the Sound.

This tour was everything I was looking for without even knowing that I was looking for it. Instead of riding in those big buses with massive people and having to wait for each individual, this tour consisted of the smaller buses with less people so we were able to accomplish things faster. Rob was a super great tour guide providing commentary along the drive. While other places got sandwiches for lunch, Rob provided us with grilled lamb, chicken, and sausage while we were out on the boat and it was phenomenal. I would recommend this to my friends all the time.

Had a great visit to Milford Sound with Rob and BBQ Bus Tours. We almost missed the bus - went to the wrong pickup location - but they were nice enough to call us and figured out where we were to come pick us up. The drive is long, but the commentary and views are great (plus you can sleep on the bus for at least part of the time). On the way to Milford Sound, you make lots of stops on the bus to get views of Fiordland National Park, which is beautiful. We went on a rainy day, which was challenging at times but resulted in tons of natural waterfalls all throughout the park. The highlight for me, though, was the cruise through Milford Sound, with beautiful views and even a stop into two big waterfalls. The BBQ lunch was great, and there were vegetarian options too (be sure to note your dietary restrictions). You get back into Queenstown pretty late (8:30pm), so bring dinner to eat on the long drive back.
