“There is a weird and creepy atmosphere in the house!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2013 via mobile

For start, the guest house located in a very confusing area, we called to ask for directions and answered rudely "you will manage by your own".
When we finally arrived, the manager showed us the place - creepy rooms with teddybears for each bed, without any sheets. (if you want- you can buy dirty ones or clean ones..?!)
When we started to make some food, the manager followed us everywhere and tried to boss us- telling us what and how to do things.
There is a weird atmosphere in the guesthouse.
we left after 1 hour.

Found the place by fluke but really enjoyed it. Evan, the owner knows his stuff and the area so well. He has a lot of suggestions on what to do and where to get the cheapest and best food. He even has a rainy day list of things that comes out on the dining table when the weather is not its best.

All in all, I have very good memories of my stay here and would recommend.

The best hostel we have ever stayed in.

A cosy and very social place with stunning views over the surrounding lake and mountains. The friendly owner Evan will make sure you find yourself at home and introduce you to fellow travellers.

If you are looking for a calm and mature place to rest your legs, the personal feelning at Scallywags is definitely to recommend.

On our four weeks journey through New Zealand we chose Sallywags for our 5 day stay in queenstown. The family like atmosphere with Evan the owner and the other international guests made us feel very comfortable. The small hostel is really nice, clean, has a good kitchen and also a fantastic view on the lake. It was the right place to be and relax between our sportive and action activities in this region, so we extended our stay there two times! Evan knows the region and can tell you a lot of information about walks and other activities there.
I can highly recommend this hostel! Georg

At first I was very weary of Evan, the Hostel owner. After a night's stay though, I learned to love the man. Evan truly makes this hostel the experience that it is. It has a beautiful view and he will introduce you to everyone that is staying there. He really makes it feel like a family. He has many interesting stories to tell and he is an experienced traveller himself.

Very nice place to stay in Queenstown.
10 minutes walk to the busy center and maybe 10 steps to the balcony with the amazing view.
Not a place for a one-day-hello-and-goodbye-stay. Don't be shy, ask Evan for a day trip or all activities in and around Queenstown. No wifi. (not easy but maybe good for some relaxing days - or use free telefoncia hot spots in the center)
With car park. Clean and lovely guesthouse.

If you're looking for a clean bed and like to meet fellow travelers, look no further.
The place has a very homely atmosphere and has a stunning view on the lakes and mountains.
The host Evan introduced me to each guest and is an experienced traveler himself. During the day, Queenstown is a 10 minute walk down the hill and has lots of adventure and adrenaline to offer. In the evenings I spend here, I had some great conversations with Evan and travelers with different nationalities and age, which was to me the most memorable about Scallywags Guest House. I would highly recommend this place to anyone except for those who go to Queenstown primarily for it's bars and nightlife.
