Stayed here twice in March 07. Its an apartment complex spread between two buildings with a mixture of sizes / types. First time stayed on the 8th floor in a two bed apartment. It was absolutely huge with a full kitchen, two bedrooms (both en suite), dining area, sitting room and wrap around balcony with fantastic views of the lake. Room was great, more than we expected for the price (paid $240 a night between four of us). Then came back to Queenstown a few nights later and stayed again, got a first floor two bed apartment, which was also lovely, although a lot smaller. We had requested the same room back and although the girl on reception put us in for it, the manager over-rode it when we got there (we reckon cos of the rate we were paying) and moved us, this was the only downside to be honest - if we'd stayed in the second room first time around would have been delighted but reckon the 8th floor view and size spoiled us. As its an apt complex it is limited in terms of services etc but its between 5-10 mins walk from the town you dont really need anything as so much is just on your doorstep.

We stayed 2 nights in Oct/Nov 2006 at Outrigger. Overall, we were very disappointed and would not stay there again. Firstly, we were directed to our room to find cleaning staff still preparing the room. Rather than being advised to contact front desk we were left to stand in the car park with our luggage while waiting for the room to be finished. Then, we discovered that our 'deluxe hotel room' was a tiny room which did not include anything to sit on other than the bed nor was there a seat on the balcony to enjoy the view that we had payed extra for. As we were trying to unpack, our door was then opened by a staff member who seemed very surprised to see us there! Staff did eventually find us a chair --- we were informed that rooms at Outrigger are furnished individually and there is no guarantee as to what you will find in your room. Unlike other reviews, when we tried to raise our concerns, we were informed that it had nothing to do with Outrigger and that we would have to discuss it with the booking agents. That night, we enjoyed the sounds (and smells) of our neighbours in the adjoining apartment as they prepared their steak meal and unpacked in the connecting room. We discovered that there was only a very thin door that separated us from them. On the day of our departure, we were awoken by staff knocking on our door at 8.30am to ask when we were leaving. Given check-out time was 10am. we informed them that we would be leaving then. About half hour later, we heard water dripping over the balcony from above, quickly followed by a down-pour of water that lasted for about 10 minutes, causing us to close the balcony door so we wouldn't get drenched. On check-out when we mentioned this to staff (thinking they may be concerned) she pleasantly and unapologetically informed us that the water came from the spa in the apartment above which was being cleaned. Hmmm..... There are plenty of places to stay at Queenstown -- if you're considering one of the hotel rooms rather than apartments, think twice before booking Outrigger at Beacon.

I was quite surprised by the quality of the hotel. I booked a simple one-bedroom room.

The room was incredibly clean with a nice shower area with really hot water (if you choose that setting) and great pressure. It looked like they even had heated floors which is something I've never seen before. Must be useful during ski season.

The 9th floor room was very spacious with a wonderful view of the bay and the courtyard.

Location is about a 5 minute walk to the heart of Queenstown, so it's a leisurely stroll through the bay.

The TV was a normal TV, with a broken remote, but that didn't bother me too much. The complimentary laudry area (with detergent) was great especially since NZ for tourists from another continent is usually a longer stay which requires some washing of clothes.

The room had a mini-fridge and utensils and some silverwear. No honor bar so you get the whole fridge to store your items.

The breakfast was so so, nothing too fancy, but they did have different levels of pricing if you just wanted a continental or basic style breakfast. It was all laid out on a buffet table so I'm not sure how they kept track of who ate what, perhaps an honor system.

Recommendation for those who bring your own towels, don't bring a white one. The hotel staff mistakenly took mine and I never got it back.

The hotel has no restaurant and bar, but there are hotels/bars adjacent to this property so you can just borrow those facilities.

The staff was extremely helpful and friendly.

Great location, 2 minutes out of town and on the lake. Good views even from the cheap last-minute room I had booked. The room was surpisingly spacious with a separate bedroom and a sitting area.

Downsides are that the hotel is very awkwardly laid-out (as are the rooms - lots of lost space) and very cheaply built. Lots of dents and scratches everywhere already.

For the price (check wotif.com or similar websites) I would recommend this.

ps This was called the Outrigger before.

Loved everything about the Outrigger:
1. Extremely clean.
2. Great location - easy walk to town
3. Loved the beautiful courtyard.
One little problem - hardly any TV channels to choose from??? Just as well, I suppose - otherwise i wouldn't have gone shopping but just stayed-in to enjoy the beautiful apartment.

I stayed for 6 nights at the Outrigger in a 1 bedroom apartment for NZD$228/night. The hotel doesn't advertise these apartments as they only have about 3 and they always book up very quickly. They have huge verandahs that look directly over to the lake and it is about a 5 minute flat walk into town. The apartments have large stainless steel kitchens, flat screen tvs in the lounge and the bedroom, a remote control gas fire, and plenty of living space. We got a shuttle bus to and from the airport so got to see lots of the other hotels around central Queenstown and I have to say that I wouldn't choose any other one when I go back as the Outrigger was perfect for our stay - if there are 2 of you, make sure you contact the hotel direct and ask to book the 1 bedroom apartment. It is well worth it.

A very clean and modern facility situated right across the road from Lake Wakatipu, an easy 5-minute walk southwest of the town centre. We were a group of six in a very spacious three-bedroom apartment (full kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry facilities, and each bedroom with an ensuite bathroom) on the ground floor, with huge lakefront windows and an outdoor terrace. This worked perfectly for our group. A friend of ours stayed in a more conventional room on the 5th floor, which was a decent size for one or two people, had a small kitchen, and featured a limited view of the lake. This is not a full-service hotel – there is apparently a breakfast lounge (we neither saw it nor went looking for it), but no room service or other similar amenities – that was fine with us, however.
