We stayed at Sofitel for our wedding anniversary in October 2013. It's a much smaller and more intimate hotel than the Sofitel in Auckland. The staff were excellent, very friendly and knowledgable. The room was beautiful, very spacious with top quality furnishings, fittings and amenities. Very comfortable bed and spacious bathroom with large bath, separate shower and even a tv. It is literally in the centre of town, less than a two minute stroll to the lake, restaurants and shops. Highly recommend eating at Jervois Steak House adjacent to the hotel. Also the cafe in the lobby has gorgeous food. Gorgeous hotel, highly recommended.

We had booked a 2 night stay in March in a prestige suite. Upon arrival I had to go inside and ask for help with the luggage, but assistance was promptly provided. I am an Accor Platinum member, and while checking in the hotel manager made an appearance, gave us a very warm welcome and informed us we had been upgraded to a Penthouse suite. A good start!

We were shown to our suite by an extremely friendly member of staff (I wish I could remember his name). He was a real pleasure to deal with. We entered the suite and this was really something special. Apparently there are only two penthouse suites in the hotel, and these are their best rooms available. Our suite was simply named “No. 5”. It was massive, with two separate lounge areas (each with a 55 inch TV), a small dining table, kitchen area with bar stools/counter, a luxurious bedroom and 1.5 bathrooms. There was a large outdoor terrace with lounger chairs and a hot tub that was filled up and ready for use. There were additional balconies on each side of the suite, giving views in three directions over Queenstown. The kitchen area was fully equipped with a microwave, washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc. The bathroom was stocked with Hermes toiletries and various other amenities, as well as a seemingly endless supply of towels. I love the Sofitel décor in general, and they had clearly put a lot of thought into the design of the penthouse.

Breakfast at the hotel was an enjoyable affair. The restaurant had been laid out in a rather unique way and it felt like we were in a café in Paris! The spread was reasonably extensive and champagne was included. I was told that eggs were available to order in “any way I could imagine”. Our two breakfasts here were probably among our favourites during our three week vacation.

Unfortunately, our schedule in Queenstown was very busy and we were not able to utilise many of the facilities offered by the hotel. My room package included access to the executive club lounge where free drinks and canapés were served from 5pm to 7pm daily. I visited this lounge once, and it was pretty deserted at the time. A good selection of drinks were on offer, however.

I did order a fruit salad via room service and this took forever to arrive (around 45 minutes). They were quite apologetic however and when it did arrive I was told it was complimentary. Fair enough then.

As noticed when we arrived at the hotel, there seemed to be a lack of staff working around the hotel lobby. When departing, we called for a porter and a female staff member from the front desk came up to assist (this felt a bit odd, and she later was the same person who did our check-out). Having said that, when we needed assistance we usually did not have to wait very long (although one or two phone calls down to reception went unanswered). Staff were more than helpful and were always a pleasure to deal with.

On the whole, this was a fantastic stay. Clearly, our room upgrade greatly enhanced our experience, but even without that this did seem to be an excellent property, and probably a notch above most other Sofitel properties I have stayed at in the past.

For just under $500/night for a luxury king room, this hotel was disappointing. I just feel for a hotel supposedly of this calibre, there were just too many little things that spoilt the experience so we won't be staying there again despite its great location. Firstly, apparently a staff member was supposed to go through the room with us but they never did. It would have been handy if they had as for example we couldn't figure out how to use the TV and we managed to spray milk everywhere when using the espresso machine. Secondly, there was no top sheet on the bed but just a duvet. We were told that this is normal as they wash the duvet every time it is used which to us seems very "un-green" particularly as the hotel seems to pride itself on its eco credentials. Thirdly, housekeeping asked us if we would like the bed turned down and we said yes but when we returned to our room much later that night, it hadn't been done. A small thing but we also didn't like the gigantic sized pillows. Fourthly, we couldn't fault the variety and display of the breakfast but that was spoilt by the staff who didn't clear our table and provide us with fresh cutlery/crockery (maybe you aren't supposed to have a bit of everything!), the espresso coffee that had to be ordered and took too long and the stale and inedible brioche. Lastly, it wasn't all bad though as the barman in the hotel bar was most obliging when there weren't any available seats in the bar so he served us in the foyer instead.

This is the second time I've stayed at this hotel in recent times, both of these stays were last minute bookings. But yet again the Hotel was fantastic, a great room well appointed, very friendly efficient staff, very clean and tidy room, the bathroom was very well equipped and large. I have never regretted staying here and will continue to do so in the future.

We stayed at The Sofitel Queenstown for 5 nights. It is perfectly located on a quiet side street, next to the stairs leading to the gondola. The Tiki hiking trail is practically in their backyard. There is no self parking at the hotel, but the staff quickly retrieves your car when needed.

The reception staff was welcoming and even offered us a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival. We requested early check-in and they were kind enough to accommodate us, which was great after 17 hours of travel.

Our room was well appointed and faced the town. There are no views of the lake at this hotel, but it doesn't matter. The lake is a couple blocks away. Our superior king room had an espresso machine (which is very important to us) as well as a Jacuzzi tub (which is very nice after a long day of physical activity). We had a small balcony, which was perfect for picture taking and drying clothes.

The concierge, who also doubled as our hotel tour guide, was friendly and knowledgeable.

We only ate one breakfast at the hotel and it was fine.

I only have one comment or recommendation - on a couple of occasions the reception desk did not answer the phone when I called downstairs. On another occasion I called the concierge to get help booking a Milford Sound trip and was told he was on break. I left a message but never received a call back. We ended up booking the activity online ourselves. To me, it is very important to know that the staff is available when needed.

All in all, this hotel was a great start to our vacation.

Room Tip: Superior King rooms are perfect.

After 15 days of travel across the South Island, we ended our trip in Queenstown, with a 4 night stay at the Sofitel - wanting a top notch, relaxing ending to our holiday - which we got! (If only it had been the first hotel we had stayed at in Queenstown, I would have never know - expect that it wasn't and I do.) That being said, I truly do recommend the Sofitel.

The rooms are extremely spacious, with all amenities. Upon arrival, we were taken to our room by the manager on duty - shown all the features - and then helped with our luggage and giving the car to valet ($25/night). Our view, from room 617, was of the Lake - and it was spectacular.

The location is perfect; walking distance to everything in the city centre.

I found the staff to be a bit of a mixed review. One morning we had an earlier departure and needed towels (for the dart river adventure) and wanted to have a booking made for dinner that evening. The gentleman was quick to get towels, asking the gal to make the booking, and I was a bit surprised at the look she gave her colleague; seemingly that she either didn't want to call or something - just a bit bizarre. Concierge was inconsistent as well; Gene and Nicholas were fantastic and always helpful with a smile.

In the end, we would stay with the Sofitel again.
