We stayed at The Sofitel Queenstown for 5 nights. It is perfectly located on a quiet side street, next to the stairs leading to the gondola. The Tiki hiking trail is practically in their backyard. There is no self parking at the hotel, but the staff quickly retrieves your car when needed.

The reception staff was welcoming and even offered us a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival. We requested early check-in and they were kind enough to accommodate us, which was great after 17 hours of travel.

Our room was well appointed and faced the town. There are no views of the lake at this hotel, but it doesn't matter. The lake is a couple blocks away. Our superior king room had an espresso machine (which is very important to us) as well as a Jacuzzi tub (which is very nice after a long day of physical activity). We had a small balcony, which was perfect for picture taking and drying clothes.

The concierge, who also doubled as our hotel tour guide, was friendly and knowledgeable.

We only ate one breakfast at the hotel and it was fine.

I only have one comment or recommendation - on a couple of occasions the reception desk did not answer the phone when I called downstairs. On another occasion I called the concierge to get help booking a Milford Sound trip and was told he was on break. I left a message but never received a call back. We ended up booking the activity online ourselves. To me, it is very important to know that the staff is available when needed.

All in all, this hotel was a great start to our vacation.

Room Tip: Superior King rooms are perfect.

After 15 days of travel across the South Island, we ended our trip in Queenstown, with a 4 night stay at the Sofitel - wanting a top notch, relaxing ending to our holiday - which we got! (If only it had been the first hotel we had stayed at in Queenstown, I would have never know - expect that it wasn't and I do.) That being said, I truly do recommend the Sofitel.

The rooms are extremely spacious, with all amenities. Upon arrival, we were taken to our room by the manager on duty - shown all the features - and then helped with our luggage and giving the car to valet ($25/night). Our view, from room 617, was of the Lake - and it was spectacular.

The location is perfect; walking distance to everything in the city centre.

I found the staff to be a bit of a mixed review. One morning we had an earlier departure and needed towels (for the dart river adventure) and wanted to have a booking made for dinner that evening. The gentleman was quick to get towels, asking the gal to make the booking, and I was a bit surprised at the look she gave her colleague; seemingly that she either didn't want to call or something - just a bit bizarre. Concierge was inconsistent as well; Gene and Nicholas were fantastic and always helpful with a smile.

In the end, we would stay with the Sofitel again.

Stayed here on my honeymoon in 2012. It was awesome. Queenstown itself is a great city with tons to do for such a small place relatively speaking. The Sofitel offers great service in an impeccable location. My wife and I were beyond pleased and highly recommend this as a place to stay if you're visiting.

Sorry for the late review. We stayed here last October with our two friends who now live in Torbay
On the North island. We had an amazing time in this hotel. the rooms were large, modern and spotless with great views over the city. We ate in the breakfast room and the wonderful restaurant. Both were excellent. We also had drinks in the lounge bar... A little quiet and cocktails too strong and not so good!! We soon found the other bar this was much better with a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
