“Great accommodation poor wi fi”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

We stayed in the White House for 2 nights. Very clean and quiet with great facilities. The accommodation represents great value with views you might expect in an expensive hotel. Our only gripe was the wi fi. Add $5 onto the initial charge and provide a decent amount of downloads into the price and you'll be on a winner

Hi FlashPacker1964,
Thanks for the kind review!

The "white house" does have amazing views from the lounge. I think it's great value for money- especially in Queenstown.

Thanks for the recommendation about the wifi, but we have a purpose to our limited free daily wifi voucher. We don't want our guests to just look at the view of Queenstown. We want our guests to fully enjoy all that Queenstown has to offer. :) There are many local walks and 100's of activities in Queenstown. It'd be a shame to spend all day inside, which is what tends to happen when we increase daily wifi.

Thanks again and have the happiest of travels,
Shana

Like the review from Eva F, we stayed 2 nights and also in room 10 and 12 !

The ensuite room was $90 and the double $80. No need really to pay for an ensuite as you only share the bathroom with another bedroom.

The view from the lounge was good.

The location was 5/10min walk from town. Practical.

Free car park.

A little negative point was the Hippo Lounge is trying a bit too hard to have reviews on Facebook in exchange of free wifi. You don't need to do that Hippo !

Hi d-douze,
Thanks for the review! You made some great points. I like that we are practical too :)

Regarding the Facebook reviews, we are trying to get an internet presence. The free wifi voucher is incentive to leave a review- any kind, good, bad, neutral- even just a hello! We don't read the reviews either before we give the voucher. You'll find that a lot of companies have people "like" them on facebook to enter competitions etc. It's just marketing.

However, if you are just saying that Hippo Lodge is so fantastic that we don't need the help of the internet and its reviews, then I agree wholeheartedly! Hippo is the place to be.

Thanks again for leaving a review and have a great day!

Good size rooms, nice views and away from the busy downtown area. Actually really quite a bit down to town - steep road but gets the elevation over with quickly and the height allows for some great views. Not a nice walk up with a heavy backpack or two! Staff are really helpful and polite.

Hi Miloman 1,
Thanks for the kind review!

You mentioned a couple of our great selling points, thanks :)
We are definitely away from the craziness of town.
And we have gorgeous views of Queenstown and the mountains.

You did mention the BIG hill and you're right, we are located one block up from the town level. However, certain things are worth huffing and puffing for! But if the hill is too much for you, we've got a sweet deal with Green Cabs Taxis offering Hippo Lodge guests a sweet $6 ride from town centre to us :)

Be well and be happy!

This place is up a steep hill but that gives it an amazing view. It's close to everything you need and easy to find (i arrived on foot in the dark and have a terrible sense of direction and still found it!) The staff were really helpful and friendly. The only down side is that it can be noisy - that's just the set-up, anyone used to living in a multi-story place would be fine with the noise of feet, radio and voices upstairs, I am used to space and quiet. I would recommend this place though :)

Hi Gayle,
Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review!

Yes, the hill is a mission, but like you said, it gives an amazing view. It's great that we are just a 5 min walk to town, bars and supermarkets but just outside the hustle, bustle and noise of Queenstown Central.

i agree, sometimes, depending on which unit you are in, and the guests here at the time, it can be noisy and sometimes quite quiet. But we love all you guys! We are quite lucky in that our Lodge spreads itself over three separate houses. Imagine having all three houses, with all our guests in one big multi-story backpackers! You can find them Downtown, but here, we like a bit of space too :)

Thanks for the recommendation!!

Be well and happy travels,
Warm Regards,
Shana

We stayed at 2 different double rooms in the White house. Lovely views from the lounge, kitchen and balcony. Quiet and clean since you only share with 3 rooms.
Room 12 was awesome. Great bed and spacious. Room 10 was ensuite (really not necessary) and bed was smaller and soggy and didnot have view.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Great location, close enough to town but far enough so it is very quiet, Very close to supermarkets and lots of places for parkiing.
We will definetely go back. So clean!!!

Room Tip: White house rooms-room 11 or 12

We stayed in the 'White House', which has the bigger double rooms upstairs, for three nights. We stayed during shoulder season, when everything was kind of winding down, so we got a free upgrade to these rooms. Reception was super friendly and didn't mind that I had to come in three times to get change for the laundry and purchase wifi. =)

We are mature travelers and loved our stay there. It was pretty quiet and we only shared bathrooms with a maximum of 4 other people in two other rooms. The 'White House' has its own kitchen and large living room that is separate from the other buildings in the hostel. We loved how quiet it was and it was pretty clean. The stove could use and upgrade, but everything else in the kitchen was nice and well equipped. The view of the lake from the kitchen and living room is also spectacular. Bathrooms were clean, but showers ran out of hot water quickly.

Shops and restaurants are a quick walk downhill, but the area was still quiet. The lodge is near the top of a steep hill, so expect a workout when you return home!

Room Tip: I recommend asking for a room in the "White House" if you are looking for a quieter stay.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for taking the time to review us on Trip Advisor!
It is true, the White House is a really nice unit ... almost "Presidential" ha ha.
We recommend the White House for those wanting a budget price point, but don't want to be surrounded by tons of people. It is a bit more expensive than our "backpacker doubles", but then again, you get what you pay for.
I am glad you enjoyed your stay and yes, the oven is getting a bit on in years, but it still works a treat! Just like me, ha ha.

Have a great day,
Shana

Hi Charlotte,
Thanks for your comments.
1.We're glad you think we are friendly - we do try :)
2. We do have a lot of steps, but we think that some things, like the SPECTACULAR VIEWS, are worth a bit of effort!
3.We do replace the kitchen equipment often, but there is a LOT of people coming through and things do get worn. Let me know next time and I'll see if I can find an immediate replacement for what you want to use.
4.We do have the most spectacular views of any hostel in Queenstown. imho :)
5. Some guests are a bit destructive with the furniture, but I have since replaced the broken piece. Next time, please let me know and it will happen faster! :)
*We are a backpacker/hostel and in order to have budget prices, we have to have bunks. Sometimes, one has to take the bad with the good.
6.I like our bathrooms too, cheers!
7. see # 2

Thanks again Charlotte and hope your travels continue happily!
Warm Regards,
Shana
