Stayed at Hippo Lodge for 5 nights recently and really liked it.

It is a bit if a trek up the hill to get to it but well worth the effort.

Arranged as a number of buidlings over different levels, it offers great views over the lake and surrounding countryside.

I stayed in the "top house" which has about 5 rooms over 2 levels - toilets and showers on both levels. Big lounge dinner with picture windows over town.

It is nice and quiet and removed from the hustle and bustle of town below whilst only being a 5 minute walk away.

One of the best hostels I have stayed in during my NZ trip!!

I just returned from here I really enjoyed my stay! Its no more than a 5min walk to the main street. All the staff I encountered were super friendly and helpful. The place itself is really nice and really clean. I stayed in a single room and it was a good size. The kitchen and lounge are really big and there are amazing views from it! Will definitely return if in Queenstown.

Room Tip: Private rooms and dorms available rooms 1-5 use the kitchen which had great views.

We stayed in one of the double, non-ensuite rooms, and it was great. One floor of the house just has three rooms on it, one with an en-suite, so you only share a bathroom with one other double room, and a kitchen between three rooms. The kitchen was well-equipped and clean, and the bathroom was clean too. Nice big queen bed, and also bunks in the room to keep stuff on. A bit of a walk back up the hill from the town would be the only downside.

The room was acceptable, but the toilet/shower did not look too clean. Plus there was only one of each, so had to queue. The kitchen has a really strange smell and the TV is in there, so if your room is around that area, you won't get much sleep. It is very noisy, which obviously is dependent on who stays there and is not the fault of the hostel, but having a sitting area right outside guests' rooms does not help. It is a big hike up a hill and some steps, then once you get to the hostel, there is a bit more of an uphill struggle, just so those with mobility problems are aware.

Hello and thank you for your comments. In regards to cleaning, our cleaners’ work is checked daily to ensure that it is done to our high standards. I have not noticed any strange smells in the kitchen, but our rubbish bins are emptied daily and must have taken care of what you smelled. We want our guests to be happy and comfortable and we ask that if you are unhappy with something, as you were with the smell, that you let reception know so that we can fix the situation.

The layout is unfortunately a bit out of my control. I'm sorry you didn't have a good sleep. We do have earplugs in reception if people need them. Often people carry earplugs themselves as sharing a room with 6 guests can wake a light sleeper.

Ha ha, yes, it is true that we are on a hill. But our elevated site gives our guests the GREATEST VIEWS of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu! Many a guest have expressed how the small puff up the hill is just a small price to pay for the spectacular views.

You mentioned that Hippo Lodge would be difficult for those with mobility difficulties. I would like to mention that we have a specific unit that is wheelchair accessible with wheelchair accessible facilities. And though we are up a hill, we had a wheelchair-bound guest who was travelling around NZ by bus (writing a blog) who stayed for a few days without any complaints. -He was pretty amazing.

Thank you for your time to write these comments.

Hippo lodge has a great view over Queenstown but as other reviews have mentioned this means a bit of a steep climb up from the bottom and then a number of stairs to the dorms.
The hostel itself was okay nothing fantastic to rave about and it appears that there are quite a few long term residents in the hostel.

We stayed in the top section of the hostel but the dorm we had was at the bottom which meant it was rather noisy at night with people walking, talking and thumping on the floor which was our roof.

Guy at check in was friendly but he did seem to try and push selling of attractions through him to get free internet.

Showers and toilets were okay but there wasn't very many of them and for the amount of people I thought there would have been a few more.
The kitchen area was not that big and so at times it was rather busy with everyone preparing meals.

We picked the Hippo as it was one of the more reasonably priced and there was also parking availabe.
For what we paid it was ok but I would maybe check out some other places next time.

The friendly staff gave me some great tips for places to eat and check out around town. The location was good (if you don't mind a bit of a steep walk) and the view was great. Decent price and the room was nice. So, despite the fire alarm going off a couple of times at inopportune times (read very early in the morning), I'd highly recommend it.

I first stopped in looking for a hostel around town and came right back to this one. Stayed 2 nights in a dorm and we had the place almost to ourselves! Great views, very spacious dorm rooms, great kitchen/lounge area. Riley was really welcoming and helpful which made our stay that much better! Only downside is that it was always so cold in the lounge and kitchen area...
