Description: Rata is a collaboration between internationally recognised Michelin starred & New Zealand Masterchef judge, Josh Emett and highly regarded local restaurateur, Fleur Caulton. Their company, Mayfare Limited, is fast becoming synonymous in New Zealand for creating genuine dining experiences that are contemporary and inspired. 'Uniquely Southern', Rata takes inspiration from the Southern landscapes and everything that epitomises New Zealand. The decor uses influences from the Otago scenery mixed with modern industrial elements and reclaimed & repurposed vintage items to create a uniquely contemporary and welcoming dining room. Queenstown's cooler climate lends itself to Josh's love of slow cooked dishes and robust flavours, the discipline of his Michelin star background and that of Executive Chef Chris Scott who heads up the Rata kitchen, ensures elegant well-balanced and inspired cuisine that always showcases the best of regional and seasonal produce. The wine list proudly showcases wines from the Otago region and afar with a large selection of wines by the glass to give the diners variety, and match easily with the style of food. Rata is a relaxed eating-house with a neighbourhood feel, excellent service and exceptional food. Located discreetly away from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown, tucked alongside heritage buildings with several dining spaces perfect for lunch, dinner and casual grazing. Rata is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy award winning and genuine Southern hospitality.

We were not disappointed - it is no wonder that Josh has such high standards on Masterchef The food was simply divine; service impeccable. We will return.

“Worth a visit - but....”
Reviewed May 18, 2013 via mobile

Great food, great staff, nice ambience. We were warned that our table was required for another sitting - but the process was too officious and clinical. We were ushered off the table with undue haste well before the time. It wouldn't have been that hard to make that transition much more pleasant. Felt like the $$ were more important than the guests. My advice would be to book for a late sitting so this doesn't happen. Other than that well worth the visit!!

“Loved it”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

A return visit for us and we'll worth while. We were treated at the door and shown to our table. Started with bites, more like a tapas serving so plenty to share. The star was the goats cheese and Rata honey profiteroles, absolutely stunning. (The recipe can be downloaded from Cuisine Magazine).
The mains were beautifully balanced. We had the gurnard and the venison. You have to get the potato mash. Silky smooth and perfect side dish.
We went for a variety of wines by the glass to match each course.
Apart from..." You should go here" the only other advice depends on who you are with. Apart from a first date, or an intense meeting with your lawyer, try and avoid table 32. It is tucked around the corner and one of you will be looking out at a concrete wall. This is such an energetic place, We missed not seeing the action, the kitchen and wine staff at work.

Some of the dishes were fusion food and very special. We ordered the "feast", king fish with mussels which was very delicious. Even the side dish was very unique. We ordered a side dish of cauliflower, it was cooked with pine nuts, small raisins and very unique sauce which made it a fantastic flavour. The service was basically good. However, I may be a bit sensitive. The waitress explained about the menu to every westerners around us, except to us. Not sure if she didn't like Asians.
