Description: Rata is a collaboration between internationally recognised Michelin starred & New Zealand Masterchef judge, Josh Emett and highly regarded local restaurateur, Fleur Caulton. Their company, Mayfare Limited, is fast becoming synonymous in New Zealand for creating genuine dining experiences that are contemporary and inspired. 'Uniquely Southern', Rata takes inspiration from the Southern landscapes and everything that epitomises New Zealand. The decor uses influences from the Otago scenery mixed with modern industrial elements and reclaimed & repurposed vintage items to create a uniquely contemporary and welcoming dining room. Queenstown's cooler climate lends itself to Josh's love of slow cooked dishes and robust flavours, the discipline of his Michelin star background and that of Executive Chef Chris Scott who heads up the Rata kitchen, ensures elegant well-balanced and inspired cuisine that always showcases the best of regional and seasonal produce. The wine list proudly showcases wines from the Otago region and afar with a large selection of wines by the glass to give the diners variety, and match easily with the style of food. Rata is a relaxed eating-house with a neighbourhood feel, excellent service and exceptional food. Located discreetly away from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown, tucked alongside heritage buildings with several dining spaces perfect for lunch, dinner and casual grazing. Rata is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy award winning and genuine Southern hospitality.

Had high expectations and Rata delivered but just. Great feta profiteroles with rata honey, a tender beef Wellington but the highlight was dessert, a raspberry cremaux that was spectacular. Service from the Maitre'd was excellent but the table waitress wasn't up to the same standard. Great wine list and good atmosphere - well worth the visit

A surreal dining experience will be the conclusion to any meal at Rata. The service was brillant the food even better and just the whole atmosphere of the place made you feel so welcome and individual. Unlike some fine dining restaurants that can be stuffy and over pretentious Rata mixes heartland personality with a classey touch.

Highly recommend every trip to Queenstown be capped off with a visit to this establishment.

An unassuming restaurant from the outside, hidden away down a lane, and once inside it's warm & inviting with an exciting buzz. The flavours in the food are amazing, using fresh Kiwi ingredients & cooked to perfection. The service is relaxed & discretely attentive as any good restaurant should be. I'd recommend anyone travelling to Queenstown must try for a special night out. You will need to book.

Rata was recommended by one of our B&B hosts and we had looked forward to dining there for a few days before reaching Queenstown. It's run by an apparently well known NZ chef by the name of Josh Emett. Actually the food was exquisite, perfect pork belly and, as we came to expect on South Island, divine salmon, washed down with gorgeous Amisfield Pinot Noir and Mt Edward Pinot Gris respectively. Unfortunately the entire experience was ruined by the most appalling service and unpleasant ambience hence the poor rating. We got off to an awkward start with our waitress who was disinterested in answering questions arising from the menu. After that we seemed to turn invisible whilst she focused her attention somewhere else. The additional time spent waiting to order desserts, wine and the bill meant that we had to suffer even longer the party of 12 who were allowed to dominate the entire restaurant that evening by shouting at each other. It was cringe-making stuff but with nowhere else to escape to we had to grin and bear it. One of the excuses for poor service we heard elsewhere was the transient workforce but there were lots of restaurants we visited that had engaged non-local staff who were an absolute delight. It's a real shame to see any business treat their customers in this way, not helped by the unconvincing apology from the maître d' as we left.

Really enjoyed the tapas style food here, a nice variety and diverse flavours. Wines by the glass are awesome...only thing stopping me from giving it a 5 out of 5 was value for money...could have been a bit better but overall still would go back as food was lovely!
