The Skyline gondola is a must-do on any visit to Queenstown. It is a steep ride from the base station in Brecon St to Bob's Peak at the top, where you have a choice of looking over Queenstown from the viewing platform, having a drink at the bar, having lunch or dinner at the Skyline restaurant, taking one of the nearby walking trails or riding the chairlift to the top for a leisurely walk down or ride on the luge. When I went it cost $26 per adult, return. (June 2013)

Pros

- the gondola is enclosed and feels safe
- it can hold up to four people
- their arrival frequency is high
- it almost stops at the pick-up and set-down points
- wheelchair access is available with advance notification
- there is plenty of parking at the base station
- there are magnificent views from the top
- chairlift at the top is free
- at the top there is a restaurant, bar, café, information desk and souvenir shop
- bar has plenty of comfortable seating with great views
- restaurant at top has lunch and dinner. Dinner had a large variety of food (carvery, hot dishes, salads, desserts, coffee/tea. Other drinks extra.)

Cons

- the viewing platform is exposed which can be a problem in bad weather. (You can of course view the scenery from the bar)
- views may be restricted. Look up to see whether the top station is fog enclosed first.
- restaurant may need pre-booking
- your photo taken when you get in (no obligation to buy). This may not be a con for some.

Photo Tips

1. The gondolas have windows that slide open to about 30cm for clear views from the side.

2. Other windows looking up and down require photos through glass. If you can, focus your camera on infinity to avoid the camera focussing on the window.

3. Wear dark clothes to minimise internal reflections

Other tips

** Ask for a FREE walking trail map at the info desk.

This was a fun laid back activity!

Breathtaking views worth the pay just for the pics!

You can take the whole family there.

Everywhere we went in Queenstown we could see the Gondola Ride so naturally we had to have a ride. It was well worth the money. The ride up was amazing and the views from the top were stunning. We spent time having morning tea in the coffee shop before leaving and were glad we'd made time for this attraction.

No matter how many times one visits Queenstown, the Gondola ride to Bob's hill is a neat experience.

We purchased a combo ticket permiting afternoon Luge and PM adult activities.

Following the Luge, we attendend a very well produced small Maori production. OK, the show is not like the big shows on the N. Island, but still neat!

Of course, we had several single malts in the bar.

Yes, the Gondola is for kids, families, and adults.

The viewing complex (wait for a sunny day) is magnificent. Lake Wakatipu, and the surrouding mountains and valleys are clear, and the sunset is magnificent.

On to the "Gourmet" buffet_Great views_excellent wines. However, the handsome buffet is of mixed quality.

In our view, the salmon is overcooked; the lamb is an inferior cut: the venison is quite good; we wonder why poor cuts of beef and pork are served: yes, the prawns are fine; give a pass to the dessert station; the cheese station is acceptable_order a Port.

Was it with it? Yes!

The tariff is appropriate for the fare.
