We booked a B & B accommodation as it was our last night in New Zealand (most of our other accommodation having been excellent motels). When we arrived we thought the owner had left (with our deposit) as there was a for sale sign outside, the garden was terribly overgrown and the net curtains in the property were grey and there did not appear to be anyone around to welcome us. Eventually we went next door and found that the proprietor lived there. If we had not paid half the cost ($200 deposit) we would not have even bothered to go any further. We did stop the night but we very much regretted having booked it and felt sorry that our last night was such a disappointment. The breakfast, what there was of it, was self service with the only cereal being Special K and the 'fresh' coffee gone hard in the packet! We were assured there were no mosquitos or sand flies but there were many squashed on the walls!
