Pencarrow
Ranked #37 of 44 Queenstown B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 6, 2009

We decided to stay at Pencarrow after reading reviews here. Even the glowing reviews did not do this place justice. Pencarrow was by far the best place we stayed in NZ, thanks to the amazing hospitality of owners Bill and Kari. Bill greeted us at the airport and drove us back, where we received a warm welcome from Kari. The place was gorgeous, with lake views and lovely grounds. Our hosts made our stay special at every moment, from (free) wine served at the bar each evening, to gifts left on the pillow, to overwhelmingly delicious 4 course breakfasts, to dessert left in our rooms every night, to recommendations about places to go and things to see, to restaurant reservations. Hospitable doesn't even begin to cover it. Bill and Kari were kind, warm, gracious, generous, and welcoming. I would recommend Pencarrow to anybody. This is the place to stay in Queenstown. You will have wonderful lasting memories here.
Best thing since bottled beer (as Bill, the Texan, would say)!

We only had one night at Pencarrow, but Bill and Kari made us feel so special. The hosts are charming, lovely people...I would love to have them as friends! I don't want to spoil the little surprises that will be awaiting you as a guest, but I have to say that you will not be disappointed. Expect to have an impressive stay at Pencarrow...the views are stunning, the attention and service is above and beyond any other place we have stayed anywhere!

Pencarrow is Incredible and Fantastic! This is a must-by far the highlight of our vacation. Kari and Bill make you feel welcome from the moment you first arrive. Your name is on a greeting board and Bill is at the car before you can open your door.
The setting, up on a hill overlooking this gorgeous lake, is spectacular. The whole house is decorated beautifully with artwork painted on walls that will mesmorize you. The momentos in the snooker room (pool room) will keep you busy in and of themselves.
We stayed in the lighthouse room. The view is unbelievable and the room is extremely spacious. The bed is huge and comfortable. The bathroom cannot even be described in words-I will just mention the deep Jacuzzi tub I found myself in twice.
The attention to detail here is amazing. Kari uses different sets of dishes each morning, even rotating your seat so you can appreciate the view from every angle.
No need for lunch after what you are served for breakfast. Don't miss the "Eggs on a cloud" made by Bill or the apple puff made by Kari. I think Kari works all day to spoil you. From the freshcut flowers in your room and bathroom, to the afternoon snack, as well at the daily weather reports, to small gifts, inspirational notes and even decorating your bed each night.
Bill shared his scotch collection with my husband, played snooker and was in charge of making wonderful restaurant suggestions.
I wished we had planned 2 extra days to relax at the house. You don't really need to go anywhere else.

You won't want to miss this place. The rooms are amazing. The views are amazing. The hosts are amazing! The breakfast is fantastic ..... several courses each morning. Bill and Kari really know how to treat their guests. The "extras" really add a special touch.... fresh flowers in the rooms, a little snack each day and a gift on your pillow each night. We absolutely loved Pencarrow and will be back!! I'd be surprised if you could find a better place to stay in Queenstown. Kyle and Leah Koontz. Dallas, Texas

We don't know where to begin on all the wonderful things about Pencarrow and Bill and Carrie. The house is beautiful, the grounds are amazing, the view is "remarkable", the service is impeccable, breakfast is out of this world and the attention to detail just blew us away! We were on our honeymoon and we had been visiting and staying at several places prior to our arrival at Pencarrow....which were all very nice as well. But just something about Pencarrow you have to go and experience for yourself. We would stay here over any 5 star/diamond resort ANYDAY! The only bad thing was when we had to leave for the next venture of our trip. We actually seriously considered changing our plans of going on to Australia and coming back to stay at Pencarrow for our last couple of days prior to returning back to Florida. Thanks Bill and Carrie for a very memorable stay and your wonderful hospitality.

Where do you start. Simple, we looked and looked, then said can they really have over 50+ people saying they are all 5-star, we have to try this. They were all right. The location is amazing, the care from Bill and Kari is what you would expect from the Ritz in Paris. They are there whenever you need them and they give you full run of the place. It felt like you were a 5 year old staying at your grandparents house and they like to spoil you. Who wouldn't want that on holiday!

Couple of things, when we landed, Bill met us at the airport and whisked us to a helicopter flight to Milford sound. Do it, just incredible. And if you don't like bugs, the helicopter will give you the lease amount of sand flies. (We saw a couple who did the Milford Trek and one woman had 20+ sand fly bites on just one leg...ouch).

Back to Pencarrow, they are a short bit out of town and that keeps down on the noise of being "close" also it keeps you from having to wade through the backpackers. The rooms are big and open the fireplace memorable and the snooker table a heck of a good time. The bathrooms are impeccable an the views stunning.

When we go back we will stay with them again just because we enjoyed the way they put the package together. The care they place in your happiness...it's hard to get that elsewhere.

Now with everything there is always the other side of the coin, here it is....breakfast, it MASSIVE! You will eat like a king, a queen, a duke and a bishop all in one setting if you don't watch it. I boasted that I was hungry, boy did I get my fill...and the food....ohh, the food was worth it.

Seriously, just go - Queenstown is awesome and Bill and Kari will treat you like royalty at every level.

Congenial hosts and a scenic setting. Bill and Kari went out of their way to help us retrieve a camera left on a bus, and were full of suggestions for ways to enjoy Queenstown. In addition, they prepared fantastic breakfasts and keep a luxurious, immaculate home.
