From the moment we first saw Trelawn we knew it would be a perfect wedding venue for us. The photos really don't do it justice, it is truly breathtaking and all our guests from around the world were quite simply blown away.
The combination of cottages, self-contained apartments and rooms were perfect to give family and wedding party their own space and the standard and quality of the rooms and furnishings were in keeping with the setting.
Nery, Michael and the dogs made us and all our guests feel incredibly welcome and comfortable. They ensured the whole weekend met and even exceeded our expectations. We can not thank them enough for all their help and advice to ensure we had a perfect day. Unfortunately we can't do it all over again but we'll definitely be back to Trelawn!

Thank you for your lovely comments. Big family weddings where everyone stays on site are fun and slightly more relaxed.
All the best for your future.

Trelawn Place is a beautiful and secluded place with stone cottages and a B&B built by Michael and Nery on gorgeous grounds, looking out over the Shotover river. We stayed in the apartment, which was very comfortable, and had a completely relaxing couple of days. You can walk about the property and admire the views, and watch the jet boat antics on the river. It's close to Queenstown, but we visited Arrowtown instead, which is charming and interesting and more low-key. Michael and Nery were friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed the corgis. A memorable stay.

Taking a break from the luxury hotel scene, we opted to stay in a local B&B in Queenstown during our New Zealand trip. It was a good decision. Michael & Nery are very easy hosts who keep things casual.

Trelawn is an easy 5 minute drive from Queenstown and easy to find, as it is well marked on the road. The pathway down Watties Track is hilly and narrow but ask Nery to tell you the story of how the street got its name.

The property is bigger than expected but the way the buildings are situated, each seems private. We stayed in Tara's room, in the main house. Tara's room was a large room, with a queen size canopy bed AND a single bed, comfortable for three adults or a small family. It had ensuite bathroom with plenty of space for luggage and personal belongings. There were not any bath amenities like shampoo or soaps. There was a mini-refrigerator in the bathroom area, but bring your own bottled water. The water boiler was a bit old. There is no safe in the room or locks on the doors (from the outside) but nothing really to worry about as the B&B is remote and far from the commercial busy-bodies that flow in and out of the tourist part of town.

Staying in the main house was like staying at an old friend or relative's home. It's open, unlocked, easy to move about and breakfast is served in the kitchen/dining area. The internal stair well is narrow, so big oversize luggage or suitcases may be a challenge to cart up/down the stairs for check in/out. Breakfast is cooked up nice and hot by request by Nery with eggs to order, bacon, toast, crumpets (!), cereals, fresh home made jams, butter, tea and coffee, and all the accoutrement of a hearty countryside meal at home. This is the only meal included in the room fee if you stay in the main house. Another perk is that if you want any laundry done, Nery will do it for you, at no cost. As well, towels were laundered each day.

The property is quiet and the main house has several areas to lounge if you decide to stay onsite. Outside deck and yard is lovely and one can really appreciate the whole natural serenity and gardens of the property from being outside-- you can hear the rapids of the Shotover River and gorge (and the rumble of the jet boats, playing up and down the river). If you stay here, you should ask Nery and Michael to show you the photo/scrapbook album of how they built the property from the ground up. It's an amazing story in pictures and gives the guest a full appreciation of how the property progressed over the years into what it is today.

We took Nery and Michael's recommendations on what to do in town--including a drive up to Glenorchy along Lake Wakatipu (glorious) and Nery also assisted with arranging a pick up at the property (driveway entrance) for the Skippers Canyon Jet boat. This outfit was much better than the jet boat group that was operating just below the property. Nery helped arrange the excursion and we recommend it, too. It was clear that the 40 years running the property and being local experts in Queenstown tourism is a benefit extended to the guests who stay at Trelawn.

The house wifi is very strong and the room we stayed had plenty of outlets/power to plug into for charging devices. There is no tv in the room, but afterall, one doesn't come to Queenstown to watch t.v. In addition, it's good to note that Nery & Michael don't run this business with strict rules-- meaning there is a casual check in/check out, flexible breakfast times within reason, no curfew on the house locked and guests can come and go with ease. All it takes is simple, easy communication with the hosts and most things can happen, easily.

We particularly enjoyed our morning breakfast chats and cultural exchanges with the other guests in the main house, including Nery & Michael. They are curious, well-traveled hosts with big hearts and open minds. The property website states they are pet friendly (TRUE) and gay friendly (TRUE). As a gay couple, we felt comfortable in the main house and on the property. It's a private place. We never really saw any of the other guests on site, other than one couple from China at breakfast.

Their two corgi's are lovable pooches, but vocal. We are both dog lovers so we didn't mind. It was a great visit, charming B&B and a nice alternative than another chain hotel or so-called luxury property. Although the price to stay on this property is high and described as "luxury" B&B, those who are expecting more than described above, may be disappointed. For us, we were thrilled to have the company of two seasoned hosts who took care of us like we were family and for this, there was no price too high. Thanks for a great stay!

Twenty years ago, my wife and I stayed at Trelawn Place during our honeymoon. We recently stayed there again with our entire family. The stay was as relaxing and pleasant as it was 20 years ago. Michael and Nery are outstanding hosts. We again stayed in the "Cottage". The cottage has an upstairs bed and downstairs living area + second bedroom. There is even a washer/dryer to handle laundry. The views from Trelawn Place are amazing! The Shotover river runs below and you can walk down to the river. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Can't go wrong with the Cottage or Tree House.

We had beautiful little garden cottage which has lovely views over Shotover River down a steep cliff with imposing mountains above. However after the great initial wow factor, the charm starts to fade. To be honest the cottage is really too small for 4 adults. There is a single loo/washroom/shower-room , a kitchen/living room, a very small upstairs double bedroom with very low and steep roof beams (no ensuite - or room to unpack two suitcases - and an even smaller bedroom with two single beds in lean-to ground floor room off the back. Wifi is almost non-existent (1 bar on my phone at best). It had a barbecue which we were told to leave as we found it - which was difficult as there was no washing up liquid supplied and no dishwasher.

It is about an hour's pleasant walk out of Queenstown. I would have thought it would be ideal for couple (not too tall!) on their own or with one companion (or two younger kids - but not too young due to proximity of cliff) who like to cook simple food at home.

I will leave the question of value for money to other people's judgements - but compared to much of the accommodation available in Queenstown it certainly isnt cheap!
