“Excelent view, great service & will be back again”
Reviewed August 19, 2009

We stayed at the Goldridge a couple of weeks back at the begining of August. We found it to be a very comfortable hotel. They are upgrading rooms at the moment and we booked the Superior Lake view. The price was fantastic for what the room is. We had a top floor room with a balcony and the view made it one of the best hotels we have stayed in in New Zealand.

The breakfast was delicious with a great selection and we dined in the restaurant one of the evenings and it was fantastic.

When we arrived the receptionist was very welcoming and friendly, and overall staff attitude was great. The internet kept cutting out in our rooms but this was no big problem in the bigger picture.

In June I stayed at different times in a Lakeview Room and one of the other rooms (without a lake view). The Lakeview room was nicer - in better condition and really did have a great view across the arm of the lake and the Remarkables. Makes it a room you can relax in - maybe by reclining on your bed as the seats aren't that comfortable! The paintings on the wall were quite tasteful too. I was upstairs which probably had a better view, though getting the luggage up there was a bit of a chore. The showers were good and the rooms have good heating - something which lets a lot of NZ accommodation down in the winter months.
The hotel is above Frankton Rd, about halfway between central Queenstown and Frankton. About 4 km from central Queenstown so a few minute's drive or up to an hour's walk. A bus goes down Frankton Rd.
I got the rooms on an internet special price which I thought was very good value. If there is any other 3-star accommodation in Queenstown with a view like that, and beats it on the internet special price, then I would love to hear about it.

This place grew on me! On arrival, I was disappointed with the room - it was, as another reviewer has mentioned, a typical uninspiring motel room - and it did smell a bit musty. But it was spacious and bright, with a balcony giving THE most amazing views over the lake out towards Queenstown (I think we paid a little extra for the view when we booked). The bathroom was also roomy, with a bath (yey), which we loved. There was ample hot water during our stay.

We had breakfast in the hotel once, and it was fine though a little expensive. We didn't have dinner there - so many other places to try out in Queenstown!

We had a rental car, so the 4km drive into town wasn't a problem ... though it did mean the driver couldn't make the most of the region's excellent red wines. The hotel had ample parking.

The best thing about Gold Ridge is the price - it really is excellent value for money.

We stayed 6 nights, and enjoyed most aspects of this hotel. The room was more like a motel room, with inadequate seating for watching television. The staff were excellent, including the Manager, who was interested in our comments. The breakfasts in the restaurant were very good, but our one evening dinner was a great disappointment. Of course, at this time of year and with very cold weather there were not many other guests, but this should change as the planned improvements take place. As we had a rental car, access was no problem, and there is plenty of parking. All in all, it was a very enjoyable stay and we look forward to coming to Queenstown again.

We stayed here for two nights in Jan 2009.

The hotel is about 4 km from the centre of Queenstown,a bit of a walk or short bus ride away. It is sited on raised ground and has great views of the lake and surrounding hills and mountains.

Rooms are plain and comfortable, the beds are fine and the bathroom a good size, including bath.

Breakfast was just OK - there was limited variety, food was adequate but could have been better. We didn't dine there in the evening.

All-in-all a decent base for Queenstown's many attractions.

We were booked in for 3 nights at this hotel. We had to move rooms as the first room we were allocated had a wet and smelly carpet. Our plans changed and we decided to leave after 2 nights. On the morning of departure there was no hot water. We were given 2 other rooms to shower in (the 2nd alternative also had no hot water).

Location-wise, this is a fine hotel. It's just outside of Queenstown, but we had a hire car so transport into town centre was not a problem.

Compared to our other hotels and motels (of similar price) we were a bit disappointed with Gold Ridge. However, it was clean, tidy, and the staff were very responsive to deal with any problems that arose.

We stayed for two nights at the Goldridge in January as part of a coach tour of South Island.

It is out of town and is a steep walk from the bus stop, but we found the location to be ideal, with beautiful view over the lake. There is a convenient regular bus service which runs from Queenstown, or you can hire a taxi. We did as a group and it cost $20 for ten of us. The hotel does not have a shuttle.

The rooms were overlooking the lake and were clean and spacious. The restaurant provided excellent breakfasts and the evening meal we had was good quality at a reasonable cost. Drinks were cheap, but maybe that was the Happy hour.

The internet was $5 for an hour and the hotel has good laundry facilities for use by the guests.

All together, we had a lovely stay, with friendly helpful staff, and would happily return.

  • Liked — Views from the room
  • Disliked — Steep hill from the main road.
