“Much better than average - but not perfection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2009

A three night stay at this beautiful hotel confirmed that its location is second to none and that in most respects it should be more highly regarded by Trip Advisor visitors. The staff are well trained and well groomed, attentive and genuinely interested in making sure we were well looked after. The room was exactly what you would expect from a 5 star Qualmark rated hotel. And generally the prices for the hotel were justified. Our only gripe came with our last nights dinner in the well regarded Lombardi restaurant. Some of the food was beautiful, but certain aspects were typical of hotel food - just not quite up to the 5 stars the rest of hotel purports to be. We also had a suspect bottle of wine, which was changed without question, but the replacement was some $22 more expensive - we had been led to believe the replacement was a 'similar' standard and price. And the biggest disappointment a side dish, described as 'crushed potatoes' that were not crushed in any way - just potatoes cut in half and roasted. At the table our enquiry into this met with some derision from the kitchen staff and inadequate explanation from the waiting staff - but perception is reality from a customer's perspective and we left the restaurant somewhat bemused - definitely underwhelmed. The request at reception to have an explanation of the dish given the following morning went unactioned and this did mar an otherwise favourable experience at the hotel. No doubt we would choose this hotel again, but they have some detail to attend to if they are to convince us that they are more a luxury boutique hotel, rather than just a luxury brand as part of a wider hotel group - there is a difference!

If you want to indulge in a bit of luxury and you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for your accomadation, then St Moritz is the place to stay.

If you can obtain a lake viewing room, then heaven awaits you every morning. The views are breathtaking. It is the equivalent waking up to someone super sexy!

As for the staff who run the place, may I say I have never met staff this friendly. Mind you I have traveled many parts of the world, and I I take off my hat for these dudes.

Happy traveling fellow comrades

We booked the St. Moritz as it sounded so nice and being so expensive - in fact more than any other hotel we stayed in during our 3 week trip to New Zealand touring the South and North Island - we thought it must be good. Indeed there is nothing wrong with it and the location is very good. Quite quiet as it is located along a residential street but a few minutes walk to the Town. However it is worth bearing in mind that it is located up an extremely steep hill and so if you were elderly or not very mobile this might cause a problem.
The service was fine - nothing special but nothing wrong with it either although beware you do get charged to park your car there and if there are 2 of you and you have separate rooms they try and charge you both for the same car!
The room was very big and the bed was absolutely fantastic. Huge, soft and possibly the most comfortable bed I have every slept in. However it was quite dark as I was at the front and the hotel is below the road level. Possibly better rooms in a different part of the hotel. The bathroon was a bit disappointing for this level of hotel and compared to the room. Everything was there but it wasn't exactly luxurious. Just functional.
Overall I would stay there again if I needed to but I don't think it is as good as the description. Nothing wrong with it though.

Just can't understand how the previous reviewer could have been at the same superb property.
The enthusiastic concierge Will was always there to greet every guest while we were there and undercroft parking was provided. As soon as you walk inside this 5-star hotel you can see why other reviewers rave about the St Moritz. The interior is stylish and warm and the professional staff were always going the extra mile to help us any way they could. Here's an example - not only is the internet the cheapest we've found at a 5 star hotel ($4 NZ for 30 mins) but they let us have it free for quick email checks.

Now to the important things that put this hotel head and shoulders above the rest in Queenstown.
* Elevated location with breaathtaking views over the lake and snowcapped mountains from your room, the restaurant, the bar, everywhere.
* Very reasonable price for a spacious ensuite room with VERY comfortable King size bed, separate lounge, kitchenette, dishwasher, washer/dryer (no laundry bills) and those views!
*Room interiors are almost out of a Vogue magazine, yet user-friendly with big widescreen Sony TVs.
*Professional staff are very friendly and will do everything for you without the hint of a tip.
* Staff are the ones providing the valuable tips - we had great meals at Flame Bar & Grill and also Fishbone in Beach St.

SUMMARY: Save valuable vacation time by going straight to this hotel above all others (we checked'em out) in Queenstown. This is a fun town and the highlight was coming home to the delights of the St Moritz.

We have read so many reviews about this hotel, and were expecting a great place. On arrival, as mentioned by one of the other reviewers, found it odd that there was no concierge service. We had no assistance with our luggage and further more, we had to pay for parking, which did not include a valet service. The room was clean and spacious however we were situated at the exit of the car park, which was very noisy. When it came to bathroom amenities there were deficiencies including lack of body lotion and bathrobes which you would expect from a five star hotel. Lastly, the gym was tiny.

Overall, compared with other luxury hotels, the price does not reflect the level of service and available facilities.

We spent a week at the St. Moritz in early April, on our honeymoon. (From Melbourne, Australia) When we walked through the door of our apartment we were blown away by the luxury of it. And that 40" plasma screen :-) We had the most amazing view of Lake Wikatipu, the remarkables mountain range and over Queenstown. We found the apartment to be very clean, well appointed and of a very generous size. We absolutely loved the comfiness of the king bed. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful. We found the restuarant to be a little pricy and the menu having a limited range. Overall we had a wonderful stay at the St. Moritz.

Went for 5 nights over Easter and this hotel was just magic-the beds are huge (super-king not just king) and so comfy. I have been looking at under-lays for at home since! We had a hotel room without a view which amazed us with its size-just real roomy. And the 'darkened aspect' of the rooms meant we slept quite late without realising the time, so we were well rested. I thought the bathrooms were great. I stay often at hotels for business and these were good. The added touch was the gym, sauna and spas-they were all first class. This is an upmarkey hotel and very classy. The staff are most pleasant and helpful. I will definitely be back if the budget allows. If you want a class hotel this is it. next time I must try a view as when you go outside you do get blown away by it.
