“It's all about the view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

On recommendation from others I paid the extra for a room with a view and I agree that it was the best way to enjoy the location. The room was excellent. Warm and spacious which is just what is needed on a winter holiday. The tiny balcony opened out onto gorgeous views of the lake and mountains. Staff were courteous and professional but then I had few demands as I wasn't in the room that much and ate in town which is a minute's walk away.
Only a couple of negatives - having to pay for wifi in a luxury hotel is ridiculous especially when there is free wifi in town. Also being on the first floor facing the lake meant being close to the road and there was a noticeable amount of road noise. They would do better to have double glazing on the sliding windows to improve noise insulation. But it wasn't terrible. Overall it was a good choice and I'd be happy to go back.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view make up for the small amount of extra noise.

We stayed at this hotel in July for a wedding and yes the hotel is a bit dated and we too had a faulty heater in our bedroom. Once you get past this though, we had a lovely view of the lake.

We had no room safe or much storage for our clothes, which was a little difficult as we were there for over a week. Wifi is pretty none existent in the room. There is a wifi signal at the fireside bar, which you can pick up if you're on the 5th or 6th floor and you tended to find a cluster of folk using their iPads or laptops in the lobbies on these floors.

Really handy laundry services, which was fab for us (3 laundry rooms). There is also a sauna, which you book with reception and they book you in so you have it to yourself. There is a small pool - but it is outside, so too cold for us when we were there.

The hotel made a grand job of the wedding. Food was fabulous and service was superb.

5 minute walk along the lakeside to the heart of Queenstown, so excellent location!

Room Tip: Ask for a lakeside view

Don't be put off by the year this hotel was built. It hosted our Annual Conference over the weekend and it was the best ever. The staff were great, the food was exceptional and over two hundred people agreed it was one of the best venue ever. Cant speak high enough of this hotel and its staff. Highly highly recommend. Far too expensive for what is on offer. Many small things that are bad, and worse, are in an abundance. Simple things like no heated towel rails, rotting bathroom doors, faulty heaters, amongst many others.
Sorry to say I wouldn't recommend and would defiantly not stay again. I'd also make a note to the staff who work on the ground floor and enter into the common room at 6am to not talk so loudly. Was awoken 3 mornings in a row consistently at 6, and struggled to get back to sleep as every few minutes there was loud conversation from outside the room.
A major revamp needed in the millions to make it worth staying at again. Sorry

Stayed for 15 nights (unfortunately). The staff were nice but could smile more. The rooms are ok size (we had deluxe). The place is run down, terrible heaters in the rooms, shower curtains are gross and the amenities are a laugh (especially the price). The fridge didn't get cold, and kettle wouldn't turn off at boil, the room cleaners were beyond a joke. One day they empty the bins, and next day they didn't. Half the time we had fresh towels and half we didn't. Same goes with cutlery and bowles ect. The bed sheets are paper thin so expect an uncomfortable nights sleep. TV is a joke, with 9 channels and no pay TV. No free wifi either, but only overpriced wifi. Windows didn't shut properly so all we could here was road noise every night - same for last year's stay. Paid $150aud a night but wouldn't say this is worth even close to that. Next time Crown Plaza it is! Avoid this place.

Just arriving outside you knew you were going to have a superb view. The reception staff were friendly, efficent and welcoming. The public areas looked a bit worn, and were overcrowded. Once I had hiked to my room, the first impression was positive. The fixed cabinetry was "tired" but the room and bathroom looked recently refurbished. The modern colours and decoration were as good as anywhere. The bed was particuarly comfortable, and the shower perfect. With the curtains drawn it was cosy and quiet. It provided a perfect sleep. With the curtains open the view was wonderful.
The in room breakfast however was the worst breakfast I had had for quite some time. It arrived on time, but cold. The scrambled eggs congealed and rubberry. The bacon fatty and cardboardlike. When I met a colleague in the lobby shorly after, their breakfast experience had been the same.

An overpriced hotel, with tired ammenities. The walls are thin and we could hear conversations from the neighbouring room. An adjoining room door also allowed continuous cigarette smoke to filter into our room. This also prevented us from using our deck as smoke drifted into our room from their deck. We also noted bunk rooms in some areas so this obviously attracts young travellers that party hard and arrive back in the early hours making a lot of noise. We experienced this that at 1am one night with a domestic agument and foul language.

I objected strongly to the 2% credit card charge, especially when the online booking company stated 'No Booking or Credit Card Fees', also watch this charge in the bar.
We have stayed in other Hotels in Queenstown in the past and have never had to complain, this one is a shocker and we will never stay in another Rydges Hotel anywhere. We were paying in excess of $170 per night over a week stay, which for this level of accommodation is a rip off.
The staff were average and did not know how to smile. The hotel looks quite smart from the outside and its location obviously attracts people, dont be deceived!!
There are many other options in Queenstown and as a Kiwi I was embarrassed that tourists would have to experience such a poor hotel in NZ.
Yes we should have moved out, unfortunately we thought things might improve?
I notice that the there have been many similar complaints and the manager has responded that they will make improvements, obviously nothing has changed!!!.
