“Not impressed Rydges”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

After reading some dodgy reviews I gave Rydges the benefit of the doubt after contacting the hotel with my concerns.
However, I should have followed my gut....Although we were in a deluxe room, apart from the view there was nothing deluxe about it.
Worn and old carpet, very dated furniture, no power point in the bathroom, and had to make repeated requests to have tea and coffee re stocked. Bathroom was very small. Only small issues, I know, but hello how hard is it to stock up. Asked for a late check the 2nd day there, and lucky I checked on the morning of departure as there was no note on our room.
On a positive note the room from our 2nd floor room was breath taking, and the hotel is located is just a quick 7 min walk to central Queenstown. Room heater worked really well, and on the odd night had to turn it off, we were cooking.
We ate at the bar a few nights and found the staff great and friendly, the lounges by the fires are a real treat.
Give the breakfast a miss ... we ate once, and decided to head to the local super market and stock up on cereal and yoghurt.

We stayed at this hotel because of its locations looking directly at lake wakitipu as well as its proximity to town. The hotel is okay but it is dated. Our beds were extremely uncomfortable and even the kids had trouble getting to sleep on them. There was a noise like a generator that came on periodically through the night. There was no service to the room when we returned at night, having been out for 10 hours. When we checked in the two people at the desk were looking at each other trying to get the other to serve us. When we checked out we were asked if we used the mini bar, I said no and he said good bye.
This is a classic hotel that needs the hotel inspector. Toilet wasn't flushed, nowhere to change at the spa and so we had to walk past the restaurant and bar in our towels.
They certainly didn't lie about their view but it seems to me that this is all this hotel has going for it.

This is a terrific hotel, my room had a terrific view of the lake and the stunning view of the mountain. Room very clean. My only complaint wood be the taps in the bathroom, they where very hard to turn off and were nearly unserviceable, not what I would expect from a Rydges Hotel. Staff helpful.

Room Tip: Get a lakeside view only

PROS
Comfortable beds and pillows
Good pressure shower in large bathroom
Good views
Good value considering we got the rooms cheap on an Internet special. Would have liked to pay full price
Looks like updating is underway. Our floor had drop sheets and painters redoing the foyer areas.
CONS
No wifi in rooms
Rooms quite small if using the pull out sofa. Very hard to get to the fridge or sliding door
Heating is insufficient for such a cold place. In order to get the rooms warm enough the curtains need to be closed which then make the rooms very dark and dingey.
Not a place you want to be stuck in wet weather
Would be great if a kids channel was available on the sky tv
Room decor very outdated
Wouldn't be sure of how cool these would be in summer. Didn't notice and fans.

Room Tip: The suites would be the only way to go. Other rooms too small and pokey.

Never in my dreams would i have imagined to get the room we did for such an incredible price. Spending a lot of time on google looking for a reasonable priced room we nearly ended up at a hostel type place when i came across this place on booking.com. Preferring to book via the hotel's website i found a "club price" option. I highly suggest signing up for the priority guest rewards, doesn't cost a thing and gives you discounts galore!! Ended up paying approx $25 less that the original price for non members, and even managed to upgrade to a lakeview room for the same price! We were expecting to be situated in the back building at the price we booked it for ($89) so were happy with that.

When we arrived the staff were obviously busy but quickly and efficiently sorted each guest query and processed us just as well. They gave me my loyalty card which was printed out at the desk and looks just like a credit card. Told me to pop up to level 6 and get a complimentary welcome drink! (which you can choose from all house wines and drinks on tap, i enjoyed my cider with my meal! You also get discounts off all meals in the the restaurants as well)

Then directed us to our room which to our surprise was right on the very front of the front building on the mezzanine level. The view was just breath taking! The lake was probably approx 60-70 metres away from our room, just across the road!! Granted the balcony wasn't the most spectacular thing, but was still great if we wanted to sit and have a drink with a view! (which we didn't as the weather wasn't much to speak of that day!) Room was extremely tidy and spacious.

Can't find a thing to complain about, will surely be back, hopefully for more than one night this time!!!

Room Tip: Sign up to their priority guest rewards program and you can use the card for all stays in New Zealan...

An awesome experience in Queenstown. Very close to everything, but in winter you do need a taxi to walk to main street as it is VERY cold! Staff were very friendly and more than willing to help! Rooms were clean and beds were comfy.

My wife and I stayed here in September of 2011 and it was such a treat. This city has so much to offer and the hotel was magnificent. We had a stellar view of the mountains and the staff was very friendly and helpful for getting things arranged for us in terms of tours, Onsen hot pools, and where to find good places to eat in town. Overall a very lovely place in a lovely town. If we got back (which I hope we do), I have no doubt we'll stay here again as this was our favorite place in all NZ, hotel and city wise.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view! Not to be missed.
