The hotel is very easy to locate, as it is opposite the esplanade facing Lake Wakatipu; and within walking distance to the town centre. Upon arrival, the reception desk was courteous and helpful and the check-in was prompt.

We were checked in on the 5th floor facing the lake. The unit is well maintained and clean with the sitting room separated from the bedroom by a set of sliding doors. This greatly reduces the noise and disturbances from the sitting room when the adjourning doors are closed. There is a second TV set in the bedroom. Both the bedroom and sitting room have access to the spacious bathroom. The king size bed and pillows are indeed very comfortable. Heating is provided separately at the bedroom and the sitting room, making the place comfortably warm and cozy during the cold autumn night when we were there.

The décor is plain and simple, giving the sense of space. Both bedroom and sitting room have sliding glass doors that open to a wide common terrace, shared by all rooms on the same row. Beyond the low wall of the terrace is the lovely view of Lake Wakatipu.

There are two computers available at the lobby, next to the reception. Wi-Fi however, is chargeable. The coffee house is situated at the 6th Floor and it provides a wide range of good food during breakfast.

We had an enjoyable stay and loved the relaxing walk along the esplanade to the town where eateries are easily available. I congratulate the management for maintaining the hotel in top-form and have no hesitation in recommending it to any visitor to Queenstown.

We only stayed one night in a Superior Lake view room - room 806. Not to sure on the lake view as you look out on an ugly roof top carpark that virtually obscures the lake! And as for Superior rating.... the room has not been updated for at least 20 years. All very old and in depserate need of an upgrade. It is situated right beside the lift that wakes you during the night. Thankfully it was clean and the bed comfortable!

The night we stayed the hotel had a large group booking so closed the restaurant to other guests and offered the bar for meals. Only problem was the bar was in overload to the group until 7.30pm as well.

Would have been nice if the hotel had central heating or could bother to pre-turn the heaters on before guests arrival.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get room 806. And when you book, ask them to have the heater on for your arr...

Such a shame your first review had to be a less than perfect one Ross A. I am happy you found the room clean and comfortable, albeit a little noisy from the lift. Agreed, heater should be turned on prior to arrival, let me chase that up for you.
All the best

Stayed at this hotel as part of a South Pacific tour. It's close to the commercial center of this beautiful town (my favorite on the whole tour). It was clean and comfortable-even the laundry area spic and span. View of the lake and mountains was just great. Staff was friendly and the service good.

There were 2 things I didn't like here, however. The first was the amount of light in the room. When the sun went down, it was DARK. There were small lights over the beds but overall the room was really without light-almost a safety hazard in other parts of the world!

My second complaint would be the food. Breakfast was pretty standard but the 2 other meals consumed there (one a group meal that was part of the tour) weren't very good. Food at the group meal was cold and the second set of food was pretty bad-no flavor or poor flavor.

Room Tip: No advice on choosing a room but would recommend that you plan to take meals other than breakfast el...

Hi LiketotravelAtlanta.
Guess what, we have changed our group set menus in the last 10 days. I am sure the new ones would be more to your tastes. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this part of the world again….which I hope you do.
Many thanks

We first stayed at Rydges Lakeside on our honeymoon five years ago and loved it so much, we returned for a recent New Year's Eve in Queenstown.

The location is perfect to leave your car parked and explore Queenstown by foot - the centre of town is less than 10 minutes and you're well away from Queenstown's traffic jams. The restaurant is ideally located to take in the views and enjoy a complete buffet breakfast. We also joined in for the three-course New Year's Eve dinner that was fresh and delicious with excellent service. The hotel is absolute lakeside to enjoy the unbeatable views across the lake to the Remarkables.

The rooms are neat and comfortable and have everything you need. While the bathrooms are older the hotel is consistently very clean and well maintained. We have always found the staff to be helpful and courteous, even during the New Year period when it was incredibly busy.

This time around we splurged for a deluxe lakeside room and were disappointed with our room-it was squashed in a corner and not as nice as the cheaper room we stayed in previously, even though we booked months in advance. If it had been one room further along it would have been fantastic but I don't think this particular room can be considered deluxe lakeside. This has been our only disappointment in a hotel we have spent 10 days at across two trips!

This Hotel has been around for a while, and with some different owners. We enjoyed our stay because of the location, the views (room 610), and enjoyed the food and service. However there are a few things that annoyed especially in a hotel that is in this class and range. I hate standing in a bath with a shower curtain the clings when you shower. I don't liike a bathroom that is poorly vented, and fills with steam. In addition two of the doors on the lounge cabinet were loose on their hinges and had to be supported while closing.
Our room was a seperate bedroom unit, very spacious, clean and comfortable. Basic services like coffee, TV etc were good, and furniture tidy and comfortable. Bed was really comfy, and plenty of storage space for a couple, and our various clothing options and luggage for the formal and informal conference segments we were attending.
One annoyance also, was the fact that our room could be opened into the next studio unit to add an extra bedroom for a larger family. While this door was locked, it did not prevent noise passing thru, and a rather niosy Japanese couple provided some background noise, both in and out of bed. Quite distracting.
We found the staff very nice, and helpful. Food and bar service was good. Breakfast was a standard option of continental or full. A dissapointment was the cold plates for the hot segment of this meal, as all was cold before we were half way thru the meal.
We ate conference food at buffets thoughout our stay - lunches and dinners were very good. Great variety, and well presented. Abundant.
The conference itself was well organised around the group needs, except the layout of the room was strange - very wide, and quite a short distance from the podium to the back wall. Gave a few of the speakers a headache having to address the far corners.
In summing up - we enjoyed our stay, and the small problems did not put us off returing for another conference. I would not choose to stay if we were just travelling and touring.

Room Tip: Higher floors have nice views, and are quieter. If you want to pay the extra - a single bedroom unit...

I chose Rydges thru Expedia because of the price and special deal (stay 3 nights pay for 2). Location was the second requirement. As we were out all day - this was only a bed for the night. We could walk to the town along the lake front (7 mins), leaving the car at the hotel. Rydges slightly 'tired' but good value for money. We chose a 'lake facing' room which was cheaper than 'lake view' but we did have a view after-all and a small balcony (too cold to open the door). No free wi-fi and not a full range of sky channels. Beds were great with crisp white egyptian cotton and firm mattresses. Rooms were a perfect temperature. Hotel may be struggling a bit financially as seemed to be minimal staff. Very much a 'tour bus' hotel but that did not worry us as we were only there to sleep.

Hi Heather H…thanks for your review. Rest assured we are not struggling. May and June are extremely quiet months in Queenstown. It is one of those periods where the summer staff depart and the winter ski season staff have not started. As a result, we man accordingly.

Many thanks
