We wanted a budget room for an overnighter and got a fair deal for the price. Went up six floors then changed elevators and went up three more. Place is sort of set into hill and room on 9th floor was situated at rear and close to back street level. Had view of coaches at back and hillside with houses dotted about. Place caters for busloads of visitors (see pic of long corridors from o/side our room).
2 single beds were not so comfy but OK for one night. TV didn’t work. I enjoyed the room’s run-down-genteel atmosphere and felt as if I’d stepped into an Agatha Christie novel. Hubby's physical size found the ceilings low and bed narrow.
It didn’t get dark til about 9pm, so close proximity to town centre meant we had time for a look around before bed.
Because of disruption to communications surrounding earthquake we did not receive our itinerary before we left Aust. It wasn't issued until day of travel and sent to our gmail address. Reception would not see if it had arrived and pointed us to their pay internet. Printer kept gobbling the pages. Then staff member helped out. Bit rigid and short sightehd in the circumstances I thought.
Would not recommend this budget type of room for more than a couple of nights if one or both of you happen to be on the large side.
No ice in fridge but could be got from bar.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. Yes our budget rooms are exactly that and I am happy you recognise this, unlike other trip advisor members. I agree with your comment, you get what you pay for and would not recommend these rooms for a longer stay as space is limited. I look forward to welcoming you back in the future under better circumstances without the added stress of earthquake disruptions during your travel.

Kind regards

We stayed in a Lake View room with a king size bed. We were able to get a discounted rate via roamfree.com which worked out great we stayed for 4 nights for $400.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The views from the balcony of the lake and the snow covered mountains were incredible.

Our room was clean and warm with the best heating we had during our stay in NZ. Located a 5 minute walk from the town centre the hotel provided privacy and a quiet, convenient location.

Information relating to activities in Queenstown were easily accessible in the lobby and the staff were eager to help we found this fantastic. Internet access in the lobby and an affordable washing room was very handy.

Parking was a little bit difficult however it seemed to depend on the time of day. We found it easier to walk into town in the end but this gave us the opportunity to take in more of the spectacular views.

We had dinner in the hotel bar one night the food was lovely, service brilliant, atmosphere was cosy and we enjoyed getting to know other hotel guests

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Rydges and look forward to returning in the near future. Atmosphere

My niece and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel, we are definitely returning to this exquisite hotel! When we arrived early in the morning, well before check-in, the clerk at the front desk ensured our every need was met, e.g., secured our luggage while the room was cleaned; offered a couple of choice rooms for our stay; made reservations for us at the ZipTour (now that was fun); suggested several great spots for breakfast and lunch; and called to confirm our scenic tour for the next day. The room had a private balcony and great views of the lake. Nicely furnished, beds were clean and comfortable! Laundry facilities, dry sauna, and outdoor hot tub were great! This was my first time at a Rydges Resort. Based on this experience, I will definitely return to this hotel and consider using other Rydges hotels!

I am very happy you enjoyed your stay and our fantastic staff could point you in the right direction as far as activities go. Zip Tour, yes I concur, it is fun, as are all the activities in this great part of the world. I hope you have an opportunity to visit us again one day soon.

Stayed here for couple of nights in the budget room. Room was ok but it really needs renovation but it fills your basic needs. Because the room looked so old it didn't feel clean and some of the furnitures were in dust. The room was spacy and had all the basic things. Location is very good just a few minutes walk to the very centre of Queenstown. Biggest problem was that they didn't have free wifi and you could only use their computers in the lobby and you had to pay for the use. It was usually crowded as there was only 2 computers in use. There are free wifis in the centre of Queenstown like McDonalds.

Thank you for your comment. We are in the process of upgrading our Wifi capability which will provide coverage throughout the entire hotel. This should be completed within the coming months. I also note your comment regarding cleanliness and I have brought it to the attention of the relevant team member.

The hotel is in excellent location but the budget rooms are worse than motel rooms. The budget room was small with dirty carpet and musty smell. I even found a used shower cap behind the bathroom door! There is also hardly any room to move inside the tidy bathroom.

The room was very small with two single beds, both of which had worn out springs. There was no hair dryer or teaspoons in the room. I did get the room at a discounted rate but would have expected a better quality room. This was definitely more budget than a backpacker ensuite room.

There is no excuse for a dirty room and thank you for bringing this to my attention. Yes, there are a basic backpacker style room however they should always have the highest standard of cleanliness. I have discussed your post with the relevant Manager and I apologise for the obvious displeasure experienced.

This could be the best hotel in Queenstown with better staff and a revamp of the tired rooms. The views from the suites (overlooking Lake Wakatipu) are exceptional.

Reception staff generally couldn't give a damn and seemed bored/fed up with their jobs.
The breakfast room is a cavernous space laid out like a school dining room. The entry is controlled like a soviet border crossing and people entering and exiting have to squeeze through this small space. The quality of the breakfast is awful - poor quality bread & useless toasters that take at least 2 'runs' to grace the bread with even a faint tinge of brown.

They do not serve lunch, so if the weather is rainy you are forced out into the bad weather to get something to eat!!

Do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else. I feel sorry for the coach tour punters who have no other choice. This hotel is an embarrasment to the New Zealand tourism industry
