Spent 2 nights at the Nugget Point Boutique Hotel with my girlfriend. Everything was perfect. Staff were friendly and helpful. The view over the river was amazing. Loved the wild-game decor. The rooms were large and clean. The possum throw on the bed was beautiful and kept us warm. All you can hear from the room was the birds and river.

Be sure to check out the semi-outdoor bath pools (onsen) overlooking the river in the property next door.

Our week long stay at Nugget Point was an extremely comfortable and enjoyable experience. The setting for this resort is hard to beat and we spent most early evenings after a hard days skiing in the spa on our balcony overlooking the shotover river. On top of this the meals in the restaurant were to die for!
Nugget Point is not about a formula driven response to guests and their needs. If you want that go to one of the big hotel chains. At Nugget Point you deal with real people who care about the place where they work.
This was exemplified one evening when we noticed Mike, the resident barman/waiter/jack of all trades, had organised for the children of some other guests to toast marshmallows on the open fire. Due to the clever design of the public areas this was accomplished without it interfering with our quiet night out.
We enjoyed the decor at Nugget Point, it is big and bold like the alps that surround it. I wouldn't have it in my home, but hey, I can stay at home if that is what I want! The canaries in the lounge are meticulously cared for and the two darling little maltese terriers would love to be your best friend but they are kept on a tight rein by the staff and not allowed to intrude on your personal space unless you request it.
Finally I have to compliment the meals that chef Werner serves up each evening. During our stay in winter they were a perfect blend of big gutsy flavours that complimented each other and the mountain climate in which they were served. The wine list is extensive and only limited by your budget.
To sum up Nugget Point is about indulgence in spectacular surrounds. It is by no means a budget destination but worth the expense for a special occasion or simply because you deserve it.

We stayed here for 2 nights of our honeymoon. The place was beautiful and tranquil. The scenery was suberb. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. I particularly loved that fresh vegetables and herbs which were provided from their own garden. Overall,a memorable experience.

By the point in our vacation upon which we arrived at Nugget Point we had traveled extensively around New Zealand. Most hotels of the hotels we stayed at were only for one night stays so we could see as much of NZ as possible, so as you can imagine we were looking forward to the multiple nights at the Nugget Point to take a breather from the travel.

From the minute we walked into Nugget Point we were disappointed. Our first impression of the hotel was the sight of two of their resident dogs mating in the lobby (another one was on one of the chairs licking its private areas). The astonishing fact was the woman at reception watched this occurring and smiled directly at me without even attempting to stop them – after she saw my shocked reaction. The dogs clearly have the run of the property – including lounging on any and all furniture in all common areas. The common areas have a very unpleasant smell, and appeared somewhat dirty. The lounge/bar area has a veritable flock of birds in cages spread throughout. The pool was open but unheated (brrrr to cold to use = unusable), and the hot-tub was empty with a layer of dirt. The lady who checked us in did not speak English well so it was difficult to communicate with her. The decorations throughout were inconsistent and in contradiction with each other. Some furnishings were weathered country, some were Victorian, some were Asian, some old English, some ancient Greek, and some what you might find in a classic lodge. There were also numerous misrepresentations from the website. For example, the home theater with the extensive DVD library as claimed – you have to rent the room per hour (okay, fine), but you have to leave the property and rent a movie from a local video store. How very odd. A reflection of the quality was the fact that the hotel was nearly empty (one whole wing was actually closed down). It was the shoulder season when we visited, but the other hotels we stayed at were more than half full – this one appeared to have a total of 5 cars in the lot at 10 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. and the same amount of rooms occupied.

As for our room, the mismatched decorative style continued. It had an exposed beam ceiling, the paintings on the wall were very cheap looking sort you would find at a flea market, and the bedding, lamps, tables, couch, etc – none of them matched. Some were country, some Victorian, some modern, some Asian. Very odd... The room did not appear very clean - hair in the shower, urine colored stains on one of the towels, etc etc. Also – the small containers of shampoo/conditioner usually found in nicer hotels – this hotel must refill their miniature containers daily. There was no seal on the containers as is usually found, and when we unscrewed the top there were significant rings of dried shampoo/conditioner found when re-using such containers. We found this right before breakfast, and were so disgusted we decided to leave immediately without even going to the restaurant for the breakfast we already paid for.

We were in our room a total of perhaps 20 minutes before we decided we would not be staying more than 1 night. I informed the front desk of this, and the person who answered the phone seemed upset and did not respond. We left the hotel for dinner and planned to check-out the next morning.

Upon checking out, the woman at the front desk was not aware of our call to the desk the night before and stated that they would have to charge us the remaining nights. I let her know we were disappointed in the resort and that we would obviously pay for the first night, but not for the remaining night we reserved. She re-iterated that they must charge all nights. I let her know that we would not pay – and would dispute with my credit card company. She called for the manager, who confirmed that all nights must be paid for regardless of why we were checking out and proceeded to convince me at the quality of his resort. Ironically enough, he seemed very familiar with the situation of a disappointed guest and the legal process of disputing the charge. It appeared as if this happens frequently. He was far more concerned with defending his honor, the resort, and making it clear that we would be charged for the remaining nights of our reservation than he was in rectifying our concerns. We have had to check out of hotels early on a few occasions such as changing business plans and similar – and we’ve never been forced to pay for all remaining nights. If you compare to the other negative reviews – you can see this is a common practice. A sensible owner intent on pleasing customers would have simply let us leave – he was far more interested in making sure he extracted every penny from us that he could. He even had the unmitigated gall of producing the standard check-in information sheet with my signature and the fact that the legal disclaimer clearly stated we were responsible for all costs. How rude. We simply wanted to check-out and pay for the night we used. However, he would not let that happen.

Overall, the low quality of the resort, it’s furnishing, amenities, and even cleanliness level may be par for a 2-3 star hotel at $100-150 per night, but not for $370 plus a night. Ironically enough – we moved to a much higher quality resort for the next night at less than half the price of the Nugget.

I would steer clear of this resort in favor of higher quality/higher value hotels and resorts in the area. We stayed at Millbrook and the Crowne Plaza – both of which were less expensive and much higher quality.

With regards to the awards this hotel has won, all but 1 were 2001 and prior. I would surmise that this hotel has had a change of owners, and the current owner is far more concerned with filling his pockets and resting on the awards of the past than excellent accommodations and service. Again, this might be fine in a budget hotel – but this is a $370+ a night resort who claims the utmost in quality. One can and should demand more when paying higher rates.

Last – I’m sure the manager will respond to this with a rebuttal, and will probably state that we were difficult guests and that he cannot help but enforce policy and charge us for all nights – which is consistent with his replies to other negative comments. That should be further evidence to you that he is far more concerned with increasing profits than pursuing excellence and satisfying guests.

Maimai, General Manager - Barry Walters at Nugget Point Queenstown Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded April 28, 2007

I do regret this gentlemans apparent disappointment and have the following to say in response.
1. I met he and his lady friend personally in the lounge on a walk around "famil" tour which we do for all of our guests at Nugget Point. He commented to me how beautiful the hotel was. How quickly his opinion appears to have changed!
2. The dogs he mentions were with me in the lounge when he checked in. No further comment to this allegation required!
3. We won the Conde Nast Gold list award in 2004 - one of the top 700 hotels worldwide. In 2006 we won "One of the top 3 hotels in NZ" by Hotelclub.com/Getaway Travel and ninemsn. This year we were chosen as "Editors Pick" of all Queenstown hotels by the same people. Nugget Point continues to win awards and does not just have awards prior to the new ownership.
4. I am sure for future travellers reading this review and my response that the fact that we continue to win awards such as I have mentioned says it all.

We stayed five nights at the Nugget Point and enjoyed every minute. The view from our balcony was terrific (be sure and ask for a riverside room), the room was excellent, and the dinners in the restaurant were the best we had in New Zealand!
The staff is terrific. The owners, Barry and Selena, are totally service-oriented, as are the rest of the staff. Helen and George at the front desk are very helpful and Mike, the waiter and do-all, is a real gem. The chef has been there two years and hopefully will stay because dinners looking at the great view through the floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant are superb.
We had a car, so the several-minute drive into town wasn't a problem and, in fact, thankfully got us away from the crowds. Laundry service was excellent.
We ate breakfast every morning enjoying the view from our balcony and the only downside to the whole visit was the prosaic and repetitive continental breakfast. The decor in the public rooms is, in our view, overdone and very different from the elegantly simple furnishings under the previous ownership pictured in one resorts book.
Highly recommended. Not a place for the budget-challenged, however.

This is my 2nd visit to Nugget Point and already I'm planning on returning again. There is a relaxed atmosphere combined with excellent quiet service; combined with a standard of comfort not normally achieved away from home.
The view from the balconies and the restaurant is stunning and I never tire of watching the boats riding along the river below.
During my travels around the world the scenery here is one of the best that I have enjoyed.
