“All good!!”
Reviewed January 28, 2009

After reading some of the no-so-impressive previous posts we were a little apprehensive about this booking which was a little last-minute and heavily price driven.

We were very impressed though.

We were upgraded to a lakeview room - a stunning scene!! The room was large, modern and clean. No problems with noise from other occupants. The hotel staff were friendly and efficient.

My only criticism is the same as one made on an earlier post about the beds - too small!! But I guess if you're used to a standard double then it's not a problem!!

We had a rental car so the trip into town was no problem (a few minutes at most) but to walk would be a stretch because the hotel is quite a way up a steep hill!!!

Overall an excellent experience and would definitely stay again.

I was a little surprised to see reviews of people complaining about this hotel. I know everyone has different experiences at different times but our experience was great.
We arrived in what is classed as peak season and booked this hotel as it is just outside of town so would be quieter at night when we wanted to sleep.
We arrived having booked a standard double room to be informed that we were upgraded to a lakeview room at no extra charge. The view from our room (314) was breathtaking and the room itself was comfortable. There was a wardrobe, fridge with minibar, writing desk, TV, couple of chairs and a table, and 2 double beds. The bathroom was clean but was a bit narrow.
My only criticism was that the beds were not really big enough for 2 people so rolling over was out of the question. Apart from that the beds were comfortable.
In the room we had lots of info on what to do in Queensland and found the staff very helpful when we went down to enquire about certain trips.
You can walk into town, which would be ok going but coming back is uphill and after a few drinks I couldn't be bothered! There is a Connectabus that stops right outside the hotel which drops you into town $5NZ return. They were always on time and the drivers friendly.
We ate one night in the hotel and the food was lovely and filling. The waiters and waitresses were friendly and very professional making sure everything was ok.

We stayed 2 nights at this Hotel and location wise its was a little bit out of town but it was no problem for us to get there by car.
Staff were friendly and helpfull
It would have been nice if the pool and spa were located inside the building..We were placed in a room four floors down and it felt like we were going down into the basement, other than that the room was clean and tidy. The view was fabulous which over looked the lake.

The was a very cheap hotel in a quiet location with a large number of good features going for it.

The location is a long way out and I doubt that many people would contemplate the walk to town. That said we had a car and had already stayed in town so it didn't matter. There is also a regular public bus that runs into town.

We had booked a lakeview room for 2 nights and after googling the area on google maps anticipated an impressive view.

We were initially shown a room, which has been remodelled but basically looked into the neighbouring property and then up the hill, the view of the lake was what you saw if you looked way to the left.

When we came down to complain and get another room, the person who checked in after me was doing exactly the same thing with the same complaint. The reply eventuated in an older room which on a lower floor didn't have really that much better of a view at all. However, the hotel does cater for a lot of bus tour groups so they may indeed have been fully booked, and the total cost of the room was comparable to the standard of the room.

We have a loyalty discount card for this chain so we ate at this hote, the st Moritz and the Sofitel in Queenstown. The meal here was the best value, hearty meal that we had and was very much enjoyed.

The rooms were quiet, even though our room had not been remodelled it was satisfactory, clean and in good working order.

  • Liked — The value, quiet location
  • Disliked — In retrospect, wouldn't pay for a lake view until I haed seen it

Arrived at the hotel and there was mix up with our booking, we paid extra for a lakeview room, and the view was great, this was the only positive thing about our stay...

1. Bathroom was mouldy and very dated, it looked like it was pretty old and have never had a cent spent on it.

2. Wallpaper was peeling of the walls.

3. Minibar fridge was so loud we had to turn it off to get to sleep.

4. Fire alarm goes off at 4 am, this turned out to be a false alarm, however the guests had to tsand in rain and freezing conditions while the fire dept turned up and checked things, no explanation was given for the alarm.

My wife and I actually gave each other a high 5 when we got in our car to leave!

In no particular order.

Location - Slightly out of town (3-4 km's from town centre, with last 1 km a steep up hill - not reccommended on a cold night. Taxi fare from resort into/out of town $10.00 NZ ((good value)) Being out of town, there was no traffic noise - therefore from that point of view - excellent. (* See comment below)

Staff - Were very friendly and helpfull, in a professional way. i.e. doing what was required, in an efficient, friendly way.

View - I would reccommned a lake view room, as the view from them is, well spectacular.

Rooms - The one we had anyway (312), a little tired. The carpet had been replace "recently" (2-3 years ago - guess) but the rest was in the 90's, and it showed i.e. scratches on the woodwork, grout on the bathroom tiles - worse for wear (walls and floor), and bathroom cabinets - water stained. That said, the rooms were clean and tidy (in as much as the cleaners could do)

Would I reccommend this hotel? Well .... probably yes (even in light of the comments above, and the fact that we have paid less and stayed at better) because a) a renovation programe is in place and being followed thro', and b) this is Queenstown NZ, where during the peak seasons (which is just about all year round) it is still not bad value for money. i.e. anything better is going to cost you more.

(*) During our first night (stayed two) a fellow "guest" had a cell phone conversation about not much, with a friend in Australia, in the corridor at the top of her voice, at about 2 am. It was only after a "request" from two other guests that she went somewhere else to continue her conversation, with the comment "hey that's people telling me to keep quite, as they are trying to sleep". My request is to all fellow hotel guests that we don't tolerate this kind of carry on any more. If they don't know the word consideration, well it's time for education. As the NIKE slogan goes - just do it - speak up, for all of us that want a good night sleep in a hotel.

We chose this hotel wanting to stay on Fernhill Road out of the centre of Queenstown. It's best if you have a car otherwise you'll need to catch the bus or walk up a rather steep hill. On check-in the room we booked wasn't available but after some discusion we did get our lake-view room. The view is stunning but the room whilst reasonably clean and comfortable was looking a bit worn and in need of refurbishment. The bathroom has a rather odd lay out that seems to result in everything getting wet.. We got a good discount on the Mercure website but I'm not sure I'd stay again as there's lots of choice of accomodation in Queenstown.
