Copthorne Hotel & Apartments Queenstown Lakeview
Ranked #43 of 59 Hotels in Queenstown
Reviewed August 17, 2012

We stayed at the Copthorne Hotel & Apartments in Queenstown for 7 days. We found the place roomy with two bedroom upstairs and the lounge and kitchen downstairs. Also having two toilets was very handy as we were travelling with 2 kids (6yo and 9yo). The lounge and master bedroom had TVs but lacked DVD players. This was disappointing as we had to boys who wanted to watch DVDs we'd brought with us.

The beds were comfortable but the pillows needed to be replaced as they were really flat. In hindsight we should have complained but never got around to it. The rooms were cleaned daily and the cleaners did a great job.

The place had a spa and a gym. Unfortunately the spa was out of order during our stay. The gym was only open the last 3 days of our stay due to some issue. When I did visit the gym I found it adequately equipped and was quite modern.

We ordered breakfast three times during our stay. If you order the night before you got a discount. We found breakfast quite nice the first morning we had it but it got a bit boring for the 2nd and 3rd time as the buffet breakfast was not varied. It was better to go into town to get a bit of variety.

The hotel was about a 10-15 minute walk to the city centre and had beautiful lake views from the balcony. The walk into town is quite easy but the walk back to the hotel was uphill and found this to be good exercise especially after a big meal!

Staff were friendly and were helpful when asked about touristy stuff in Queenstown.

It was disappointing that the hotel did not have WiFi in the hotel. They did offer internet access in the rooms but you had to plug your laptop into the cables provided. This did not suit as since we travelled with iPads and iPhones. You could use the smart TVs to surf the net but I don't recall the hotel's internet rates as being that good. Also we just decided to watch the Olympics.

Overall, the hotel is fine and ok for families. The apartment had been refurbished but it has been done on the cheap and still felt a bit tired and old. We'd probably stay at the Copthorne again if we were to visit Queenstown in the future.

We stayed here for 10 nights during the snow season.
Rooms- We had 2 Queen beds in sperate rooms upstairs and a single bed in the lounge room downstairs. Both bedrooms upstairs had there own shower, but only one toliet located upstairs. Downstairs there was an additional toliet.
Amentities - There was a drying room located below the stairs where the hot water tank is kept, so it dryed our cloths over night. The kitchen was suffcient, though it only had a bar fridge so it made grocery shopping limited. There was a comfortable couch and dining room table. Overall there was enough space for everyone without it being crowded. There were two balconies overlooking the lake (one balcony off one of the rooms upstairs and one off the lounge room). All rooms had flat screen T.Vs and the heating was perfect.
The only drama we had was the initial smell of the apartment of old cookinig from previous tenants, though after a few days it went away.
Internet - In the lobby you get free Wi-Fi for 20 minutes evry 24 hours, but anymore you have to pay and its quite expensive. There is a good internet cafe located in town under the World Bar if your require the internet.
Location - You could walk if you wanted too. But we hired a car and found this easy to get around, plus the parking at the apartments were great and always found a park. If you go out at night there are taxi's everywhere and we never had trouble stubbling out of pub of all hours of the morning and jumping straight into a taxi to get home.
Staff - The staff were friendly and very helpful.
Price - The price was fantastic for what you get and i would stay here again.
Cleaniness - The rooms were tidy and clean, plus the beds were so comfortable and after 10 nights none of us complained about how comfy our beds were.
I would highly reccommend staying here, especially if there is a small group travelling together.

Room Tip: 2 bedroom apartments would fit 4-5 adults comfortably.

We stayed here for 4 nights during a winter trip to go skiing and visit friends. The rooms had been refurbished, clean and had a great view. The space was amazing and with the slightly odd layout of bathrooms, a 2-bed apartment would easily do for 2 couples of as it did for us a couple and a toddler. The furnishings were nothing flash and the lobby area was a bit bland but the staff were very helpful and there was a great big spa pool that could be booked that my toddler just loved.

The location was a little bit further from the centre of town than I had thought - probably 300m too far if we were being picky but the price point and comfort of the room made up for that as well as regular buses going both to ski slopes, airport and town if needed.

I would definitely recommend for a family or group of friends.

Room Tip: Clearly, ask for a Lake View!

We stayed here for 5 nights as part of a ski trip. We had a two bedroom apartment, which was clean, comfortable and even had 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets. Kitchenette was well equipped and the staff cleaned our dishes daily which was also fabulous.
It's only a short walk to the town centre and a taxi home was under $10NZD. The views were spectacular also. Would recommend this hotel again, and we are probably going to book here for our next NZ ski trip.

A group of us stayed here for our skiing trip, three in an apartment room, two in a double (we stayed int he double). I liked it very much and it was a great place to collapse after a full day of skiing.

The good:
- Very comfy, squishy bed.....I originally thought it was too squishy but actually turned out to be just right
- Friendly, helpful staff
- Clean, spacious rooms
- Great views of the lake
- Heater worked amazing and the cleaning staff turn it on for you so your room is warm by the time you return
- Shuttle buses to ski slopes stops right outside this hotel, no lugging ski gear to town for the bus
- Spa you can book to warm your aching body
- Big, clean bathroom
- They helped us transfer a mixed up booking....we didn't realise there were TWO Copthorne hotels and book our friends into the other one.

The bad:
- Price of internet
- The distance from town (not really that far) started to get to me on the cold, chilly nights walking to dinner.
- Our room had a slight smell....we concluded from other guests keeping wet snow gear in there earlier or something.
- Breakfast is expensive, we bought our own supplies form the super market to have before we hit the slopes
- Apartment was harder to heat as the warm air kept rising to the bedrooms upstairs.

Overall, a really nice accommodating hotel for an awesome ski trip.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights; our longest stay in our entire 12-day itinerary in the south island. Our stays were mostly motels and so we were kinda looking forward to our stay here. However we were kinda disappointed. There is no wifi which we were very surprised as it is one for the basic facilities. Room and bathroom were spacious but there is no heated hanger in the bathroom. The number of channels on the tv was very limited too. Breakfast is average. The only good point we can think of was the location of the guest laundry which is just located opposite our room at the same corridor.

Everything was fine and it was value for money for one night in Queenstown. A little out of the way for walking into the town but lovely views and the hotel meal was ok. We got confused about where the restaurant was but this was soon sorted. Turned out that it was closed for the evening but you could order anything from the menu and eat in the bar.
The person working behind the bar seemed to lack energy and wasn't overly aware that it was her role to provide some service. She was quite busy making lists and talking on the phone.
The people at the front desk however were very helpful.
