After a shaky start (house was not cleaned for arrival which the managers apologised for and gave us a gift of 3 lovely local Pinot's to enjoy) we all settled in for a wonderful stay. The house was warm and very comfortable for a group of 8. Needs some attention to carpets, mats and sofa's which were stained but other than that it was perfect. Easy walk into town but don't recommend the climb back up the hill, taxis are cheap for the short distance. Highly recommended for a small group or large family, we are already starting to plan our next visit. Thank you Shambala for a fabulous holiday.
I stayed at Shambala with my partner and 7 friends (4 couples and 1 single in all) and the bedroom & bathroom configurations fit all 9 of us perfectly. The fifth bedroom had bunk beds, so it might not suit a 5th couple.
Shambala is exactly as advertised, down to the bedlinen! It is luxuriously appointed (heated bathroom floors AND mirrors!) and close to town (the walk from town back up the hill's a little more work for your heart, but that's what comes of hiring a house halfway up the hill! That said, the views are absolutely worth the heartstarting walk up!).
It has, as outlined in its listing, 5 bedrooms, outdoor spa, steam room, amazing views and separate living areas so we each had our own little chillout areas when we needed it. It made a great holiday house for us to get together in.
I suspect that the property is reasonably new, but has had a few careless people through it already, as there are signs of wear on the carpets on the stairs (there's a notice asking guests not to wear shoes inside) and the sofas are a little saggy.
One of the bathrooms didn't have sufficient towel rails, so one couple had to hang towels on the sunchairs; other than that none of my friends seemed to be in want.
There were some coloured stains in the main bathroom bathtub, presumably from some dried up cleaning agent (shampoo? Shower gel?) that the cleaner had missed, but I really wasn't too fussed about it. With that gorgeous outdoor spa to soak in, we didn't even end up using the bath.
Although it was early spring, we were a little cold when we arrived at Shambala and were looking forward to lighting the fire, but there was no firewood (which was a little disappointing) so we had to buy some. Once the fire was lit, it was gloriously toasty.
While we were there the gardeners came through for a garden tidy, so there was a small period of leaf blowing and mowing in the garden. Again, no big deal for us, but if you're finicky about it, ask Victoria the agent to make sure they don't visit while you're there.
We paid by credit card, which is processed through the secure Queenstown i-Site website, so your payment is secure. The vagaries of banking mean that although payments are processed almost immediately, the refund of the security deposit following our stay took longer.
If I can corral another bunch of friends, I would definitely stay at Shambala again.
