“Great value and wonderful scenery”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

I spent my last few hours in New Zealand on this lake cruise. After checking out all the cruises in town (aside from the jet boats, which I wasn't interested in) I chose Southern Discoveries. The length of the cruise was perfect and its route seemed to be the most scenic.

We received great commentary on the history and geography of the area and even some film location tidbits.

Compared to other short trips in the area, this was excellent value and even included tea/coffee and biscuits and free entry to the underwater observatory.

I would definitely recommend!

“Great commentary!”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

A great way to see and hear about Queenstown. The commentary was great and very informative and very friendly. It was a bit breezy so pretty chilly. Would definitely do it again.

“Very Relaxing 90mins.”
Reviewed November 20, 2013

Today I went on the 3pm Cruise and Steve was our Captain. Very pleasant, friendly and as only 5 of us onboard at no time were we made to feel he was doing this for only 5 people. Beautiful scenery and knowledge of the enviroment we were in was excellent. Tea/Coffee available plus Biscuit free.
Feel these owners are at a large disadvantage for where they are situated as when I went to purchase my ticket at the Kiosk they were all ready to sell and promote the Million Dollar View boat. Talking to another couple from the USA on board the same thing had happened to them but like myself they had the flyer from their Hotel. This I think needs to be addressed in some way if this Lake Cruise is going to succeed. Delightful way to spend an afternoon and would recommend to all. Thank you.

“The best cruise on Lake Wakatipu!”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

Having previously lived in Queenstown, I've generally taken visiting friends and family on the Earnslaw cruise, and have enjoyed it very much. However, from now on I think I'll stick with Southern Discoveries! The boat was very comfortable, we had access to free tea and coffee, our captain provided us with biscuits and a lovely commentary along the way, always checking to make sure he could be heard, and understood well by those passengers for whom English was not their first language. He was a really courteous and personable host, and we enjoyed the trip from start to finish. He pointed out the sheep and cattle hiding in the bushes as we neared the banks of the farms on the other side of the lake, and gave us some of the beautifully crystal clear and clean water to samlpe! Not everyone on the boat was keen, but their loss was my gain!
Whilst the Earnslaw is a lovely, historic cruise, the boat shows its age with its glacial pace and noisy, filthy coal burning engines. Our boat cruised along at pacey, yet comfortable speed, allowing us to cover more of the lake without falling asleep, and make the most of the beautifully fresh NZ is famous for.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

We are confused by the other reviews. Yes $25 pp which is good value in comparison to others but we didnt get biscuits, didnt get to taste water, could barely hear the guide with his brief commentary, boat was not at all comfortable. The only thing that saved the experience was the gorgeous weather.
