Just what queenstown needs......another hotel on land that was once a great camping ground. thanks developers you know just what we need. Is that why it went bust in the first stage of construction. Too far out of town and a bit hard to get to. Bonus is that it gets all day sun in the winter

Beautiful town, wonderful place to appreciate it.
Kawaru hotel is on the other side of the lake, so the entire town can be seen from here. The walk from the airport to the hotel along the lake was a trailer of queens towns beauty. The hotel is well connected to the city by bus and ferry.
The wine near the fireplace facing the lake and watching the sun go down at nine at night was the highlight of our stay

The check-in was easy, no hassle and very friendly staff. I ordered the portable cot prior checking-in and it was ready when we entered the room. The cot is clean and comfy.

The room is on the small side but everything was there. Kitchen, living room and separate bedroom with door, and even a (tiny) balcony. The kitchen is complete with utensils.

Unfortunately on the night of our stay, there is a fire int he building at midnight when we and especially my baby, is fast asleep. The alarm was deafening and made us panicked. The fire department came within 5 minutes after the alarm, and turns out there is a shortage in the laundry room at the basement.
The only apology we accepted was written inside the lift on a piece of paper. Quite dissapointing.

Breakfast was so-so, however the view at Wakatipu Grill is astonishing, looking over the jetty.

Should the fire incident didin't happen, it would be quite a pleasant stay.

We recently stayed three nights at the Kawarau, after staying two nights in Queenstown proper. Like some other reviewers, expectations were high, given the Hilton connection. Service at check-in was somewhat lacklustre - credit card details taken, keycard handed over and directions to lift given. No more, no less. It continues to amaze me how some establishments fail to understand that an opportunity to make a good first impression can never be recovered. How about asking if it's the guest's first time staying there and, if so, a short explanation about where everything is? Further, our rate included breakfast but we were not told where it was served and from what time to what time. We had to ask to find out that it was in a completely different building - at the Hilton. Also, the signage at the complex could be improved. In my view, they should do away with this separate branding of Kawarau Hotel and just call the whole thing Hilton, with the Kawarau rooms as one of the classes of rooms available. I don't see the benefit of this attempt at a separate hotel when most of the facilities are across the road at the Hilton. A bonus of staying so far from Queenstown is ample free undercover parking. Our room (non-lakeview) was at one end of the building and we had great views of the river and mountains. It was good having a bathroom that had an opening window. Not a fan of having the towel rail so close to the toilet pan if it is flushed with the toilet lid open. No facecloths in the bathroom which I found odd. The shower curtain (shower over bath) had to be positioned carefully to prevent a steady stream of water leaking onto the bathroom floor. As an aside, the stay at the Kawarau was made more memorable by what appeared to be a funeral directors' conference at the Hilton, complete with brand spanking new Holden Commodore-based hearse driven out of our car park and displayed at the front entrance to the Hilton Hotel. The living area of our room (with kitchenette) was good apart from the lack of a dining table, as another reviewer has mentioned. If we bumped into housekeeping staff in the corridors or lift, we always got a friendly greeting - maybe they could train the front desk staff to do the same? Overall, a good hotel, and great for peace and quiet if you have a car and don't need to be in the middle of Queenstown.

Room Tip: Level 4 has less foot traffic, as there are only 5 rooms, but be aware that if reaching the room fro...

I think my expectations were too high for this property, thinking it was still a “Hilton”, its not…its just ‘managed’ by Hilton.

HiltonHonors status not recognised at check-in, however amenities were in the room upon arrival. Front desk staff on check-in weren’t the friendliest, however other staff within the property really made up for the check-in experience or lack thereof.

Had a deluxe lake view room, enjoyed having a kitchenette, good view, comfortable, clean, and couldn’t have asked for more. Value for money was great.

Downside, nil gym access unless you pay at the main Hilton complex.

Supermarket and Airport within walking distance of hotel.

If you are looking for a quiet retreat, away from town, then this is the place for you.

While on a road-trip around the South Island, we stumbled across this brand new property (at the time) run by Hilton known as Kawarau - we couldn't believe our eyes when we saw the prices, and had to book a room for a night while we spent time in Queenstown.

We didn't really want to stay in town, since we preferred to avoid really touristy places, so staying on the edge of town appealed to us. When we arrived, we discovered that even if you wanted to stay in town, Kawarau would be a great place anyway as they have a regular taxi-boat service into town.

Being managed by Hilton meant that service was excellent from the time we arrived until the time we left. There was some confusion as to which amenities we were allowed to access or not given that it wasn't the main hotel, and based on our tariff, but we didn't mind.

We stayed in room 111 in building 2, which is situated on the front of the property facing the water. The room we had was tiny, and clearly geared up for the winter season rather than for summer, including a completely useless balcony, but the views were lovely (even from the bathroom), and the living room and bedroom spaces were nicely proportioned.

The rooms seem to be well soundproofed and have all the mod-cons, but unfortunately while we were there clearly everything was a little too new as the room was engulfed in a plastic or glue smell, and WiFi and TV reception was extremely poor. We certainly felt like we were the first to use the room though as absolutely nothing showed any signs of wear-and-tear, so this surely wouldn't be a concern for guests now.

If you're heading to Queenstown for a skiing holiday and you want the comfort, and the beauty, with town centre at arm's length, this place is probably for you.

Stayed at Kawarau in a lakeview studio apartment- very comfortable for two people. Kitchen small but well equipped- we cooked most of our own meals, including a roast dinner one night. Would have appreciated a place to sit and eat, rather than perching on lounge furniture, with plates on knees, however would still happily make a return visit. Probably best to have own transport - although it's a lovely quiet location, it's quite a way from downtown Queenstown.
