The hotel is situated slightly off Queenstown city centre, which makes it very quiet and comfortable. The staffs are helpful and easy to deal with. The view is great and breakfast at Wakatipu Grills was excellent also. Rooms are small but not tiny. It has everything you need in it, and it looks and feels fantastic.

A great place to stay. The room overlooked the lake and was very well appointed (with a comfortable bed too, which we found a bit hard to find in NZ). The balcony is tiny which was a bit disappointing, but for the price, the hotel is really good value. It is located a long way from Queenstown central, but if you are not wanting to go into town for dinner, that is not a problem.

This was our 3rd stay here and once again it meet all expectations. Location is great for access to vineyards and Arrowtown, buffet breakfast is amazing, the Kawarau village has everything you need and the service is fantastic. We are getting married at the Hilton in the Kawarau Village in 5 weeks and the service of the staff is 5 star all the way (through the Kawarau Hotel and the Hilton Hotel). Cannot wait to get married here!
We looked through the Sofitel also on this trip and we are so pleased with our choice of the Hilton - it has a much more 'Queenstown' feel and the food at the Wakatipu grill is outstanding. Even when staying at the Kawarau which price wise is cheaper than the Hilton it definitely doesn't feel cheaper at all.

Room Tip: We had the lake view room at the Kawarau this stay and it was great having a bit of extra room and t...

Excellent sized rooms, very clean and modern decor throughout the hotel. The rooms were faultless apart from our shower being a bit weak which we were told was not the case for the other rooms. As we had only communicated this on our last night, we were allowed to use the shower in another room just for the one night. The shower in the other room was a lot stronger so the one in our room must have been faulty.
The hotel is not centrally located in queenstown but there are transport links that can get you to queenstown. We had a hire car so we just drove into queenstown which was only 10minutes. The hotel had free undercover parking and we didn't have a problem finding parking in queenstown as there are plenty of unmarked side roads in good walking distance to the centre.
Overall we loved this hotel and would definitely stay here again!

We stayed here for 3 nights and found the room very comfortable for 2 people. Nice living room area which is separate from sleeping area and can be closed off with a door. The kitchen area was quite nice although we didn't cook anything. Just used the utensils and dishes for takeway. (Speaking of which, the Asian restaurant Me & Mee was the worst meal we had on the enitre trip! I saw others enjoyed it but ours was horrible. We only ended up eating the rice since we were hungry.)
The bathroom was roomy and you can open the window in there which was nice. You can also open a small door that goes to the "balconey" which was nice for letting in fresh air.
Others have commented about the property not being in town which is true. The water taxi is great if the lake is calm. If it isn't it can be a bit of a choppy ride over since it is a small boat! It picks up on the half hour at the hotel and on the hour in town except around 4pm which must be break time. I believe the last pick-up was 9pm. The total ride roundtrip was $15 NZD. We thought that was reasonable and I'm sure cheaper than a taxi.
Getting to and from the hotel from Queenstown proper and the airport means you have to cross a one lane bridge with a stoplight. It took us a couple of times through the light to get over on Saturday morning. Speaking of which, we never even made it into town on Saturday. We left the hotel around 10am thinking we'd pop over for breakfast on our way out. Traffic was so bad that we just turned right on Hwy. 6 and left. We noticed a lot of cars parked along the road and people hopping on the bus instead of trying to get into town and park. I don't know if this is normal for a Saturday or not but thought I'd point it out for reference.
There is a small deli/grocer that sells wine at the hotel, which was nice. The wine seemed reasonably priced since one was less expensive there than at winery where we bought it! They have coffee and tea as well as other bakery items for breakfast. One thing though is they do not open until 8am so if you are taking a tour to Milford Sound you'll want to get something the night before. We found this out the hard way and ended up spending $25 on a cappucino, tea and some muffins as take-away from the main restaurant that was open at 7am.
We did have dinner in the pub one night and it was very good and reasonably priced. Fun decor too!
There is a safe in the room which was good. There is no WiFi so we used the computers over in the Hilton. This was fine and we only had to wait once. One computer was a bit slow and one day one of them didn't work properly but that isn't uncommon for situations such as this. The computer room is on the 4th floor below the main floor by the front desk.
This is a very nice property but I would probably stay in town next time.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor just above the bar area and there was some sort of reception going on Fri...

Dear workinforvaction

Thank you for sharing your comments following your recent stay at the Kawarau Hotel.

There was a concert on at one of the wineries during the weekend that you stayed. This will be the reason for the increase in the traffic.

I was pleased to see you enjoyed yourselves and I do hope I have the opportunity to welcome you back to stay should your travels bring you back to Queenstown.

Kind regards

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed two nights at the Kawarau Hotel late February 2013. The nightly rates we got varied significantly, possibly due to some big event held in Queenstown on the Saturday night. But either way, we were exceptionally happy with the overall quality of the hotel.

One of the highlights of our stay was the breakfast buffet provided at the restaurant located right on the lake. There were a sufficient range of cold/hot food to suit most appetite. They even provided a fruit juicer for guests to make their own fruit juice. The coffee made to order were also great to start off the day.

Please note that the Kawarau Village is roughly 10 minutes drive away from the Queenstown city center. This was preferred by us as we wanted to stay away from the party crowd.

Lastly, for those who need the internet but does not wish to pay, you just need to walk over (~1 minute) to the Hilton Hotel lobby to ask for access.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Excellent breakfast buffet.

Very good accommodation. Staff were friendly. Little bit far from town center, but not a problem with the water taxi or if you have a car. Room was very well priced, very clean and had an amazing breakfast. We also had a great meal at Me & Mee Noodle Bar.
