If you want an easy, no-hassle visit to some of the more gorgeous scenery on the planet -- Moke Lake might be for you. It's a quick drive from Queenstown, but as soon as you turn off the main highway you are in a different world. The drive through a highland sheep station is lovely, and then you reach a gem of a lake set against mountains with a nice walk around it. This is not a serious hike, but it's a nice place for a picnic or stroll. On the day we went -- a Friday afternoon in summer -- there were only a few other people at the lake, including a couple of campers. It was lovely!

Even at it's busiest Moke Lake is a serene. The 20-30 minute drive out there from Queenstown is beautiful and once the you can ride or walk some great trails or just sit and contemplate the view.

Beautiful spot for a short camping stay. A tranquil lake nestled in rolling hills. Horse trekking available opposite the lake..

This natural beauty is a short 12 km drive from Queenstown. The last 4 kms is ungravelled road hence larger camper vans might not be suitable. We drove our rental Ford Felcon and took us 20 mins from our hotel to arrive at the lake. Along the way you'll come across numerous sheeps as the path winds through some private farms. Destination has wonderful walks (2hrs for the one that loops around the lake) and also has a camp site. Just sitting and relaxing for a few hours makes your day. You can take a sheet and have a picnic. Kids loved it.
