“Great lake views”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

A fairly new hotel. Very different from your normal Hilton. More like an Alpine resort as it was very close to the Remarkables Ski area. Didn't try the restaurant as there was a nice pub 50 metres away with good food and you could sit outside with lake views. Had a great room with lake views, well worth paying the extra to get the view. Free parking which is unusual these days. The only small negative, if you havent got a car its a fair bus trip or water taxi to town. Very close to the airport if you have an early departure. As you can check in at airport then go back to the hotel and rest up before your flight

Room Tip: Go for the lake view rooms.

We arrived at the Hilton after staying in town at another hotel. When we arrived in our lake view deluxe room we were impressed as it was squeaky clean and had a beautiful bathroom. Our lake view was limited and we missed the picturesque view we had been looking at in our previous hotel which made us fall in love with Queenstown. The breakfast staff are lovely and the food was amazing. We did have a couple of disappointing things happen during our stay. We found the room noisy as we could hear other guests slamming and opening and closing sliding doors, our bathroom tap leaked and flooded our whole bathroom at about 11pm at night, staff did handle this very well though I must say. We also had an issue with the valet parking, often you would call the service desk and there was no answer, on two occasions out of our 3 night stay we had to physically attend the service desk to get our car, we felt it defeated the convenience of valet parking. we also went to use the spa and the jets weren't working. I wouldn't say it is a bad place to stay but I wouldn't stay there again. Also be careful it is very far from town (we knew this when we booked) just for other travelers it's useful to know. Thanks to the staff at the Hilton who were always friendly and especially to the breakfast staff who are all very good at what they do.

We stayed here on our first night in New Zealand. The room (#1117) was comfortable, clean, spacious and good views of the lake. The hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. We rented a car for this trip and used the parkade down road near the Kawarau Hotel (managed by Hilton) free of charge. Breakfast was part of our package but unfortunately, the service in the Wakatipu Grill was just okay. The staff seemed confused and not sure who was doing what - this was the case the first morning and the second one a few days later when we returned from our visit to Doubtful Sound. For example, we asked for coffee when we arrived to the restaurant only to receive two cups as we were walking out the door. On the second visit, we asked for coffee as we sat down again but we were nearly done with breakfast by the time it arrived at our table. We used the gym and it was enough for a basic workout – free weights, elliptical, stationary bikes, etc. Overall, we enjoyed this place. It was nice not being in the middle of the Queenstown and great being so close to the airport.

Book it! You wont be disappointed... My Wife and I have stayed in a few hotels in Queenstown, Heritage and Novotel, to name a few but the Hilton is easily the best hotel in the town.
Why, well lots of reasons... the location is stunning, the decor of the hotel exterior and interior and compliments the rustic surroundings with the most beautiful view that you can view during breakfast, lunch or dinner. The service, a few tweaks are needed by some of the younger staff but the senior management where excellent in supporting the Hilton brand.
Getting to and from town, there is a speed boat that takes about 12-15 people and your in town in 10 mins, if he dosen't stop!
We booked a room for a Spa and it was great to relax with a wine and watch the sun set! We where here for four nights in Feb from the 15/2/13 to the 19/2/13. Put simply, if you want to have a treat.... it dosen't get any better than here! See you next year! Kevin and Lisa.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for the Spain your room! Spoil your selves! The spa in the hotel also offers a g...

We stayed at the Hilton Queenstown for 3 nights in Feb- room 314. The hotel has positive and negatives. However, our experience was overshadowed by a potential bed bug issue and Hilton/management’s poor handling of the situation.

This was our fifth and last place to stay on our NZ trip. After our first night, my husband had intense itching on his legs. By the afternoon a cluster of red bite marks appeared. At first we did not think any thing of it, but each day a new cluster of bites would appear - and on the last morning we found two bugs in the bed that (after investigating on the internet) appeared to be bed bugs. We did look at the mattress and did not see an obvious infestation. However, out of caution left any luggage/traveling clothes that we did not need/could do without. While we were en route back to the United States we did more research and thought there was a good probability he had been bitten by bed bugs. We cannot be sure that it was bed bugs or that they were from the Hilton, but the sequence of events and finding two bugs in the bed made us extremely cautious. After traveling 24 hours, we immediately quarantined the rest of our belongings to be properly washed and treated, which we did. Before checking into and after checking out of the Hilton, my husband did not have any other bites.

After arriving home we emailed Hilton Queenstown about the issue. Given how difficult it can be to eradicate bed bugs and the potential damage to Hilton’s reputation with a possible infestation, we thought we would receive an immediate apology for the inconvenience and assurance that they were exterminating/taking preventative measures. This did not happen. It took quite a bit of time to get any response and then more prodding to get an assurance that they would have a pest control service investigate.

The on-site management made us feel as though we were making up the entire situation, and has never acknowledged that the room may have been infested (only that they found nothing - not even that they exterminated, which we’re still not sure if they did). We initially did not want to post anything on the internet, but given the Hilton’s poor response to the situation, we felt that fellow travelers should be warned.

Pros:
Modern, brand new hotel. Rooms are very comfortable, refrigerator in the rooms. Quiet

Cons:
The hotel is located a good distance from Queenstown. You cannot walk to Queenstown and there are no restaurants (other than the ones on the property) within walking distance. If you do not have a car you can take a water taxi (limited schedule/sometimes full) or bus (longer than the advertised 20 minutes each way). If you want to go to Queenstown multiple times in a day (say for lunch and dinner) this can get quite pricey. The Hilton should really have their own shuttle.

You have to pay for wi-fi. Every other place we stayed at gave you a certain allotment of free wi-fi before you had to pay. I believe the Hilton’s policy was about $25/day. There is free internet in the business center, but only 3-4 computers and they were often all be busy. It would be better if there was at least free Wi-fi in the lobby or more computers.

The pool is really a lap pool and would not be good for small children

Dear TXtraveller_8

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your stay at the Hilton Queenstown.

It is disappointing that you did not enjoy yourselves. As you are aware we responded to you instantly regarding the issue of potential bed bugs.
The room you occupied was placed out of order immediately and we enlisted a reputable pest extermination company to conduct a thorough investigation and advised you personally that no bed bugs were found.
Queenstown has experienced an unusually long spell of hot weather this summer; this has resulted in an increase of sand flies and mosquitoes in the area. This may explain the bites you received.
I appreciate you have requested a monetary reimbursement; however, I feel we have taken every possible precaution to ensure our guests are never at any risk of an infestation.

I do hope you do have the opportunity to visit us again should your travels bring you to this part of the world.

Kind regards
Andrew Nisbet

I stayed at the Hilton Queenstown multiple times during my time in New Zealand and felt it was a real value compared to other hotels in the area. Check out Hilton’s pay in advance option and you can get a pretty good rate.

As the title of my review notes its location on the opposite side of the lake from Queenstown was a plus because it was peaceful compared to staying in town. . The neighborhood it’s next to is very nice as well for walking, running or just hanging around the lake. You can take a 15 minute ride on a water taxi right into town, which is convent.

The rooms are well designed and have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The hotel staff is great as well.

I tend to stay away from hotel restaurants, but one highlight on this trip was the Hilton’s fine dining restaurant the Wakatipu Grill…excellent food, service, and wine list. The bar is comfortable with nice views. Worth a visit even if you aren’t staying at the Hilton. . Take the water taxi from town and make an evening out of it. The dock is right by the restaurant.

You give up a little in views and location relative to Queenstown (a plus in my case), but the Hilton off sets that with value in the room rate, service, quite, etc.

What makes me saddest about this review is that international visitors will think this is the best Kiwi hospitality can get - and they would be so wrong.
The hotel environs are beautiful, nestled scenically on the lakefront. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable.
Unfortunately the service and the unnecessary charges all conspire to remove the gloss - $29 per day for unreliable wifi, $10 a day for someone to drive your car 200 metres to the underground car park, $35 for a full buffet breakfast per person. Like I said, unfortunately international guests quickly passing through wouldn't know they could get MUCH better food for a quarter of the cost a few km's into town.
And as for the understaffing and strange or non-existent opening times of the bar and restaurants... Nuff said.
There are better places to stay in Queenstown and throughout NZ - Hilton need to seriously raise their game!!

Dear Palmytaff

Thank you for posting your review on Trip Advisor.

I appreciate your concerns for our international visitors but happy to advise they enjoy their stays here in the village.
We do offer complimentary internet in the Hilton Business Centre and guests are very welcome to park their own cars in the underground carparking facilities. Most guests prefer to use the valet service as they are used to this overseas.

Thank you again and I do hope you have the opportunity to visit Queenstown again soon.
