5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2012

on our South Island trip we stayed at a few motels. When we arrived at the Hilton Queenstown we were so enthralled that we didn't see that much of Queenstown. It was a very nice room to be in. Luxury.
Location: 10 min or so drive from the downtown area. there's a shuttle boat that takes you to the downtown a few times a day. free parking
Room quality: great.
bathroom. very clean. very big. about half the size of some of our rooms
sleep: very good sleep here
internet....this wasn't free in the room. had 3 or so computers in the business room to use.
fitness/pool. nice pool. 2 lanes for laps. enjoyed it

would definitely stay here again. if i had a say where we go to our meetings/conferences i would pick this hotel. it is the nicest Hilton I've been at ever

The staff is competent, attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. The location has a view and privacy. The rooms are ample, clean and comfortable. Amenities are as stated, with no surprises. Make sure you have a car though. I'd hate to depend on the shuttle across the lake to get to town.

We stayed here for 3 nights from 22-25th november 2012, and found it to be a lovely place to stay. It is about a 15 minute drive out of Queenstown so if you want to be in the middle of it all, dont stay here, but if you dont mind staying out of town a bit, I would recommend staying here. We had a little trouble finding the hotel reception, the hilton sign is very small and the complex it shares with other residences is quite big, so we drove past it on our first attempt! You can walk into town by the lake or catch a water taxi, so its not completely isolated. The room was really spacious, clean, modern, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was big with a separate bath and shower. The balcony was small, with only two stools on it but that was big enough to sit and take in the views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We had fresh milk delivered to our room with no hassle, and when our newspaper didnt arrive in the morning the staff were very apologetic and brought one up as soon as we told them. The pool area was great, we were the only ones in there on the two occasions we used it and the hot tub was very relaxing. We ate at three of the restaurants and we had excellent food at all. There is free internet use in the business centre. This hotel is on a par with other hiltons as far as standards, but offers a unique stay in respect of location and facilities in the 'village' complex. I would stay here again and recommend it.

Location : 15 mins away from city so need to have own car (free parking at hotel) or bus to city for <$10. Location away from everyone else means the section of lake you have is to yourself and very nice walks from the doorstep.
Value: We paid $185/night for a twin room overlooking lake. Was very happy. Bath and toilet are very nice.
Staff: excellent and very helpful, friendly and greeting everytime you walk in/out. Answer phone very quickly and knowledgable.
Sleep quality excellent with no interruptions
Internet available downstairs for free. It would be nice if they had free wifi but if you want net in room its $14/1st hour or $29/day which is pricey.
The pool and spa are amazing and we hardly had to compete with other users in december, would be much busier in winter I assume as spa is heated and pool isnt too cold either.
The only negative is the balconies that are shared between 2 rooms which makes one uneasy about leaving door to balcony open

Would highly recommend. definitely ask for a lake view room.

Excellent, well furnished, clean, stylish, rooms with very comfortable beds and good spacious bathroom. The view of the lake and mountains from our room was beautiful and the balcony got full sun in the afternoon - great for sitting out. Unlike other reviews we had no issues with the staff. We had the pool to ourselves when we used it and found the free wi-fi business centre very useful. Quieter location out of the town so really need our car.The best hotel we stayed in during our whole NZ trip.

Room Tip: Ask for lake view....

A very good quality hotel, as you’d expect from Hilton. The hotel boasts excellent rooms and views of the lake.
It is about 7km out of town, so I'd recommend staying if you have a car or you'll have to rely on buses or water taxis, which are frequent but may be less convenient for you. That said, the walk into town along the lake is a great way to see the lake up close and only took about an hour, including several photo stops.
The hotel is close to airport, which is convenient f you have an early flight out like we did. It also has some great restaurants and a bars which cover a variety of cuisines, so you don’t feel as though you have to go into town if you don’t need to.
The hotel staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome at all times.

The Hilton seemed to be very understaffed. They couldn't help with bags - there didn't seem to be porter to 'mind' the bags at checkout - leave it in a pile and hope it doesn't go off with a random customer.

No slippers and water in the rooms (apart from mini-bar fridge) - Had to wait for a long time to get anyone on the phone (seemed to constantly get hung up on). Ended up walking to reception several times as the room was on the 4th floor and collecting stuff from the front-of-house staff.

The room was relatively clean and modern. The bed - not so much - seemed to have black 'crusty stuff' in the linen and bonus hairs. Gave up waiting for house-cleaning to change it. My wife wasn't too pleased. Tub and separate shower with rainfall + standard shower head.

Room had a decent view of the lake and also a gas-fired heater inside. Air-conditioning seemed to keep the room at a constant temperature. Small juliet balcony and two small stools outside that you could sit out on. If you wanted privacy - it may be bit constrained, as the balconies are joined to the neighbouring room and you may get an unexpected visitor if you leave your curtains or door open.

The location is way out of Queenstown central - it's a water taxi (every 30 -60 minutes @NZ$15 return) or 2 hour walk. You can call a taxi - but it's a bit of wait for them to come out from the airport to pick you up. Worse if it's late and the airport is shutdown.

We had dinner at the Grill - but had to wait almost 20 minutes to be seated, even though we had a booking. Seemed to be too busy to get us seated. The downstairs bar/grill didn't have a bar tender that could make cocktails. Supposedly he had recently quit. The only wait-staff could pour beers.

The upstairs bar had a nice lady that made really good cocktails and was quite friendly.

Most of the staff seemed to be going through the motions. More three star service - or a DIY apartment hotel. Some staff were really friendly and seemed very helpful. At the Sofitel - all their staff were friendly and helpful.

Free internet downstairs for last minute bookings - but there are only four and they can get busy if there are bored teenagers on facebook all day.

Spa was okay - at least it had slots to book. I think the staff are variable - my wife thought her therapist didn't have the touch - but it an okay facial + body massage for NZD$260.

Breakfast was typical 4/5 star hotel quality. A chef to cook-to-order eggs and pancakes, etc. Fresh fruit, juicer, cappucinno, coffee to order, etc. This is a western country, so there is less staff than an Asia-located Hilton.

We stayed in the Hilton due to problems with our aircraft leaving that afternoon. We had previously stayed at the Sofitel for 5 nights in downtown Queenstown. When we return to Queenstown - we're going to stay at the Sofitel (there's not much difference in price). At least we got a chance to see what the competitor chain hotel was like. Maybe the Hilton can improve - but it's not much fun spending hundreds on a beta-product.
