Owner description: Operating out of Queenstown airport and flying across the Southern alps on one of the most spectacular short scenic flights in the world, Glenorchy Air is a family business owned and operated by Janet and Robert Rutherford. We operate daily fixed wing flights in which everyone has window seat for unimpeded views. These include fly-cruise-fly, overflight, helicopter and coach options into and out of Milford Sound and have been doing so for 20 years. Glenorchy Air run regular flights to the Mount Cook region, to Mount Aspiring, Queenstown's local glaciers, Stewart Island, Otago's East Coast and to Fiordlands Doubtful Sound. As we worked on the "Lord of the Rings" movies we have a unique insight into movie locations with various flightseeing options and personalised tours on offer.

Ray had been very professional and entertaining at the same time. The 3 Ring tour has been the highlight of our honeymoon. Keep up with the good work Ray! Will definitely fly with Glenorchy Air again!

Ray thanks you for this review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your day with him flying around the Lord of the Rings locations sites in the South Island. Look out fro the release of The Hobbit movies later this year.

“Great but...”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We went to Milford Sound, we know the weather can be dodgy there, so were thrilled to be going. The pilot arrived and told us that the weather had deteriorated so it was unlikely we could do the cruise. That was understandable and unfortunately the weather did deteriorate and we couldn't stay, the but.. Is because the pilot went on and on and on about it, we accepted the situation first up, it is what it is, it got to the point that we all looked at each other and said is there something else going on? I would recommend the flight and Milford Sound is lovely just hope it's not quite as unsettled as ours was.

We are pleased that you enjoyed your flight with us. We are sorry you got the mistaken impression that something was up.
Subsequent to your flight no-one had been able to fly to Milford Sound for 12 days because of bad weather. Also the only road there had been closed due to heavy snow, avalanches, trees and rocks across the road. The day you flew with us the forecast was for good weather all day but the weather then deteriorated. We are used to the changeable weather here but this period was some of the worst we had experienced in 20 years of operation.

“A must do and worth every penny!”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

We decided to do a day trip to the Milford Sound. We booked a bus to the Milford Sound and then took the boat cruise and ended the adventure with the plane ride back to Queenstown. We used Glenorchy Air as recommended by out bus tour guide. It was absolutely amazing! The best way to spend a full day experiencing some of the greatest beauty in the world. Out of 50 people on the bus trip, we were the only two who decided to fly back. Not only were the views amazing, we returned 3 hours prior to what we would have had we taken the bus back. Robert was our pilot and was very informative and very careful. You could tell that our safety was HIGH priority and he went out of the way to give us a great experience. You cannot go wrong with this company and we HIGHLY recommend them! Moreover, we recommend doing the same thing we did, Book a bus tour to the milford sound and the boat cruise once you are there, then fly back! You then get to experience the 8th wonder of the World by road, sea and air! AMAZING!

Thanks for your review. We were very pleased to read it. Taking the Milford Sound coach, cruise and then flying back to Queenstown with Glenorchy Air is an exceptionally good way to spend a day you will never forget. We can book all this for you if required. The scenery is diverse and the Southern Discoveries cruise boats in the fiord at Milford are recommended. We are happy that you enjoyed your day.

“Most AU-some experience!”

We just returned from the 3 Ring Trilogy Trail by Air and can't even begin to say how amazing it was. We were expecting to see some shooting locations but got much more. Rob was able to "put us in the shot" and made the scenery come alive. Will is an awesome pilot and staff at airport is top notch. We will definitely recommend this trip to everyone. We will be talking about this for a long time.

Our flight around some of the Lord of the Rings location sites is a great day out around the South Island for fans and none fans alike. The scenery itself is amazingly varied and includes views of the Mount Cook National Park and lots of the South Island's enormous sheep farms where many merino knitwear originates. If you watch parts of the extended DVDs some of the cast tell of their overnight stay at Poolburn, where quite a lot of filming took place.
Thanks so much for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed your day with Glenorchy Air .

“Special treat in a special place.”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

We (2A, 2C 10/12) had a late afternoon flight from Queenstown and an early checkout. What better way to spend the day than take a spectacular flight over the Southern Alps to Milford Sound. We were collected from Queenstown and transferred to the airport where our luggage was cared for by Glenorchy Air staff while we embarked on our outing. Our Pilot, Ray, was very friendly and confident. He made sure everyone on board was comfortable and feeling good about the flight experience. We were treated to a smooth flight through absolutely stunning scenery with excellent and informative commentary from Ray. We got some amazing photos. We had previously flown in a light plane over the Swiss Alps and this flight was at least equal to that first experience. Our elder son loves to fly in light aircraft and Ray gave him the privilege of riding in the co-pilot's seat on the return journey. The cruise around Milford Sound was beautiful with friendly and informative staff. Top marks to Ray and Jacqui and the proprietors of Glenorchy Air. Highly recommended.

It is lovely for you to travel as a family. i'm sure your children will always remember this experience. You never know they may take up flying themselves on day! It is interesting that you have also flown over the Swiss Alps. Thanks for your kind comments.
