“Beautiful and different”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

For the most part we really enjoyed our trip to Skipper's Canyon. The canyon itself is beautiful and it was interesting to see the site of the original bungy, the sheer size and depth of the Canyon, the jagged landscape and to learn a bit more about the gold rush. Wolfy was our tour guide and was very good at setting us up in all the right places for some great photos. The roads are narrow and winding, with lots of blind curves. There were several times where I was really quite afraid that we would slip off the edge. Wolfy knew just what he was doing, but still - pretty scary! The tour lasted 4.5 hours, which felt about an hour too long.

How wonderful to learn that Wolfy - one of our most experienced Driver/Guides - did an excellent job to point out the best photo opportunities for you. The unsealed and historic Skippers Road can add some extra thrills and surely creates lasting memories for all our visitors. This soft adventure road is certainly 1 part that my entire team loves to share. Since we frequently stop for those photos and let everyone get out of the 4WD minibus, it can and does happen that we add some extra time to the standard 4 hours. I am glad you enjoyed Skippers Canyon. Thanks for sharing.

“The True Picture of New Zealand”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

This was probably the highlight of the Scenic Tour options. It took us into areas that you wouldn't see yourselof with great views, some "hold your breathe" driving (all very safely negotiated by our expert four wheel drive driver), and some really interesting history of the gold discoveries of New Zealand. The contrasts of being up high above the canyons, then down onto the River beach and everything in between was fantastic and, so too, was the fact we were not rushed or hurried in any way even to arriving back an hour late after investigating some extra little areas and dropping some of our crew off to have a ride on the Shotover. A GREAT tour!!!!

“Skippers Canyon on 17th February, 2013”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

The trip to Skippers Canyon, even though quite precarious in parts, was a very enjoyable trip. It was made especially so by our driver, Graham, who gave us lots of interesting information as well as being a very safe and courteous driver. Being able to stop along the road and take some breathtaking photos was great as was our morning tea and accompanying wine!! It was the highlight of our 3 weeks in New Zealand and we would certainly recommend it to our friends. John & Lyn, Australia

“You absolutely MUST do this tour”
Reviewed March 4, 2013 via mobile

We took this tour on our last full day in New Zealand after a 5 week touring holiday. And it was the best trip of our whole 5 weeks without a shadow of a doubt.
Wolfie picked us up from our villa at 8.20 and we were on our way out of Queenstown by 8.30. The scenery is staggeringly beautiful once you get into the canyon, which only takes about 20 minutes. From there on there are plenty stops for fantastic photo opportunities and short, easy walks along some of the most scenic parts of the canyon road. The road runs high above the river which, at least in good weather, is a ribbon of pure blue water far below.
At the head of the canyon, where the original schoolhouse has been restored by the Dept of Conservation and has various pictures and story-boards of the gold rush days in the canyon, we had a leisurely morning tea/coffee/wine stop here, with the drinks, cookies and cheese and biccies set out on picnic tables. We came across another outfit that does a similar tour (Nomads) and it was clear to all of us that we had the better deal. We were in a small Toyota 4WD, 8-seater minivan with plenty space and everyone had a clear window view. Nomads operate Land Rovers with the 4 unfortunate people in the back sitting sideways facing each other. They were also in and out in a significantly shorter time than us so must have really missed out on a lot of the history and stories of the place.
And that brings me to what really made this the best tour of our holidays, apart from the spectacular scenery of course, and that was our inimitable driver and guide, Wolfie. His knowledge of the place is fantastic and his enthusiasm for Skippers Canyon shines through. The combination of the gold rush history, the stories about the characters, the wilderness of the place and the sheer grandeur and beauty are unbeatable in our view.
On our morning tour, there were several of us that were keen to capture the scenery on camera and Wolfie made plenty stops on the way in and (in different places) on the way out - and of course he knows where all the best photo opportunities are. We were never rushed and in fact we were more than half an hour late back into Queenstown, Wolfie having checked that no-one had a time limit to get back.
We can not recommend this tour highly enough. I think it is impossible that you will not enjoy it and be glad you went.
