You give them your credit card, and they give you a plastic card which allows you to dispense wine in varying amounts. Each time you do this it adds however much it says to your tab. Most wine seems to cost around $3 for the minimum amount, very small but enough for a tasting, with a maximum $35 for Grange Hermitage which was retailing for over $1000 a bottle. This was probably our only chance to afford Grange Hermitage and at that price not bad value so we tried it (far too young in the bottle).

After about 10 wines I had pretty much reached my limit. It would have been good to see a somewhat wider range, as a few slots had no bottle or the bottle was empty. It is a little overpriced, as after all they are hoping you will buy a whole bottle, so if they made less profit on the tasting you might try more wines. We also compared prices with the bottle shop round the corner, some were the same price but some were significantly more expensive.

All in all an interesting experience and worth doing.

When we arrived we were given an overview of the shop/tasting method. The staff member was very nice but really flew through everything, and he never engaged with us again.

Overall, we had a very nice time wandering about sampling the wines. We had $30 on our cards so the sampling amounts were subtracted which was a great way to limit spending. We managed to sample a lot of wines for $30 each and enjoyed using the machines themselves. There were a lot of photo opportunities.

The tasting experience did make me a little self conscious as I felt a bit like I was in a shop being watched by (albeit very nice) staff. The room itself is very dark so I'd recommend going there in the evening rather than during the day. Having no bathroom (bathroom in the food court next door) also feels a bit strange as the venue itself is SO much nicer than the food court.

My only real disappointment though was the lack of cheaper food options. My partner got a lot of lovely olives for around only $5 but there was nothing for me (I don't like olives) for under $14. Even just being able to buy some fresh grapes or rice crackers would have really improved my experience here.

Order an outstanding cheese platter, and then go to town sipping, slurping or sifting through an amazing array of local and international wines. What seems a novelty at first, quickly becomes an understandably sensible way to expose your pallet to as many different tastes as possible. This concept will catch on quicky globally, no doubt.

While I expect it is also elsewhere, as the system wouldn't be cheap, it is my first time seeing or experiencing wine tasting this way. More like an upmarket liquor store when you walk in but then an understanding that it is something different with a few couches and sitting area. The place has 90 something wines where you 'sample' small, medium or large serving using a swipe card to activate the wine pour and add your spending experience to the card. Each wine is separately priced according to its value and tasting notes accompany most wines. All are said to be at their perfect drinking temperature. To keep it simple, wines are arranged into their variety groups eg pinots together as are chardonnays in a group etc. As well as wines, there are some whiskies and other choices to sample. It is neither cheap nor expensive but a fun and enjoyable way to explore NZ and Aussie wines plus a bit more without the hassle of driving. Wine sales are available by bottle and shipping, at your expense, can be arranged. Something to consider doing with friends prior to dinner together or on that day when wives are shopping or snow fields are closed!

Four trips to Queenstown - four visits to Wine Tastes. Comfortable, relaxing and an easy way to taste a great variations of wine. Cute little bits to buy and take home also. Highly recommend!
