Owner description: Milford Sound is the jewel of the South Island and a must see destination and Kiwi Discovery have been running trips to Milford Sound for over 25 years. Travel on the luxury coach with ample leg room and full commentary from Queenstown or Te Anau & ride in comfort as you take in the spectacular scenery. Once in Milford we join the Mitre Peak cruise boat, for that personal and up close experience. The boat does not take tour groups just "like minded independent travellers." So sit back and enjoy the complimentary tea and coffee and full commentary from our experienced guides as you learn the history of Fiordland National Park. A great value trip without the luxury price.
Useful Information: Stroller parking

Our experience with the customer service staff online and the driver, Bob, to Milford Sound were great. We found the pick up time too early at 6.35 am. There were also a few stops along the way to pick up more passengers which was a bit of a drag since the whole journey took about 5 hrs. The cruise was nice. If you enjoy looking at waterfalls, penguins and seals this may be a worthwhile trip. This is provided you can take the 5 hrs journey there (with a half hour break at Te Anau) and back in a coach.

Thanks Patricia for your review.
We like to pick up early so we have ample time on the scenic journey to Milford Sound to make stops along the way and have ample opportunities to take photos.
It's 300 kms one way so even without the breaks, it is still a long journey, but one of the many reasons why we have a luxury and comfortable coach.
If someones budget and weather permits, we'd definitely recommend the fly back option

Awesome tour of Milford Sounds. Bus driver was knowledgeable and provided some good commentary of passing scenery and sights. His sense of humor was the cherry on top. We didn't order the picnic lunch, but was able to buy lunch at the Te Anau stop. Mitre Peak cruise was fantastic way to take in the wonders of Milford on the water. Also got to see seals and one lonely yet adorable penguin. This is a must do when visiting Queenstown.

Thanks Jerole for your comments. This is the best time of year to sight penguins and pleased you were lucky enough to see one. Not everyone does get that opportunity.
Will pass your comments to the driver too, I know he'll be pleased to hear them.

The early morning pickup at the hotel was right on time. Our driver kept the trip and comments interesting with stops for breathtaking photo ops. The weather was superb and the snow on the peaks was fresh. The breezy cruise created wonderful effects with the waterfalls and the captain was an expert in getting up close to penguins and seals on the shoreline. The picnic lunch was a time saver and sufficient. Only wish we could have seem more of this beautiful country in our short visit.

Both Milford Sound and the boat tour were great. This review is for Kiwi Discoveries 9 hour round trip transportation to Milford Sound. My wife and I booked a recent November Milford Sound tour from one of the many tour booking companies in downtown Queenstown. We actually paid more than one of the other companies offering the same tour because we were sold on the brochure and the fact that the motor coach was described as being very comfortable with reclining seats, glass roof, movie on the return, etc. After having to pay and arrange for our own public bus transportation from our hotel (Queenstown Hilton) to a bus depot for our pick up and drop off (all the other customers seemed to have been dropped off and picked up at their accommodation by Kiwi Discovery) we boarded a pathetic 16 passenger van with no glass roof, no bathroom, no reclining seats, spider webs on half the windows, extremely uncomfortable seats, and no video for a return movie. Somebody asked for air conditioning which was turned on from vents only at the very front of the van and made a periodic loud screeching sound like nails on a chalkboard every 5 minutes. This went on for several hours. Also, every time we went up a hill, the van barely had the horsepower to climb. Vehicles of all sizes were constantly passing us. Also, I wasn't even able to sit next to my wife during the first part of the trip because there were not two seats open together anywhere in the van. And this was our honeymoon. Upon being picked up at the bus depot, our driver announced we would stop in Te Anau in a little over 2 hours. We thought he was joking since we assumed this old pathetic van was just a transfer van to the advertised motor coach. We sat in disbelief for hours. I've never been so uncomfortable. I'm only 5'8" tall and my legs didn't even fit without my knees hitting the seat in front of me.

There was no explanation or apology from the driver. He only said it was better this way because it's more intimate. Not true! There was nothing intimate about the tour. Not one single passenger spoke to any of the other 15 people on the tour during the entire 12 hour journey. The driver did nothing to engage any of the passengers.

When we were approaching Queenstown, the driver offered to drop any passenger off at a place in town even if it's different from the accommodation from where they were picked up. I immediately asked for the Hilton. He said he passed the turn for Hilton (which was about 2km back). Why offer this if you're not going to deliver on your promise?

We were not refunded any of the bus fares but the following day, we went to the Kiwi Discovery shop in downtown and expressed our complaints. The nice girl apologized and gave us a 50 percent discount. I feel that we should have been given a refund on the total amount except for the 2 hour boat portion in addition to the bus fare money we had to pay. If this company really wanted to make things right, we would have been given a full refund.

I love New Zealand and the Kiwi people. This was the only bad experience during our 10 day honeymoon in New Zealand.

Thanks for your feedback 808Josh808, I am sorry the trip was not satisfactory for you but I do appreciate you taking the time to give us your comments. You are correct, the bus we used that day was not one of the ones we normally use. Unfortunately the one we would normally use had an unexpected battery problem that day and could not be operated. This would have been ok but the one we would normally replace it with was also out of action for scheduled maintenance. This left us with the choice of cancelling the trip and disappointing/disrupting the day for everyone who had booked, or run the trip with the bus we had, which is what we did. I’m sorry the driver did not explain the situation better and you found the bus we used to be unsatisfactory. It certainly should not have had spider webs in it and thanks for letting me know of the screeching noise, I was not aware of that and our mechanic is looking into it. We appreciated you coming in to discuss your concerns at our shop, it was a very unusual set of circumstances which is why we offered you the 50% refund, which works out almost the same as just refunding the coach portion of the trip. We will take your comments onboard however and do our best to provide better communication in future if a similar situation were to arise again.
thanks Tim

We joined the Milford Sound bus tour in Te Anau. Our driver was friendly and informative. The boat tour was great, even though it was a "moody" day. We ordered the on board picnic lunch, which was good - made life easier.

Thanks for the review, I also agree, my favourite times in Milford are actually the moody and rainy ones. Waterfalls abundant and the clouds put in to perspective how high the mountains actually are. Good to hear you had a great day. Will pass your comments onto the driver and KD staff and hope the rest of your visit to NZ went well
