Milford Sound Day Trip and Cruise from Queenstown by Luxury Coach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 15, 2012

we travelled to Milford Sound on a Milford Select bus in January 2012, and took options to take in the glacier flight and the return flight to Queenstown. The driver was awesome he knew so much about the area, including the history and the effort to maintain Milford sound and surrounds in the pristine condition. The best part was the amount of stops to take in the views and watching other buses drive straight through missing the amazing scenery we took in. We would definitely do this trip with Milford Select again. Awesome effort by the team at Milford Select on a perfect day for visiting Milford Sound.

I would say we were a little disappointed when we saw that the coach was not the one in the website with glass roof. We were blessed with excellent weather on the day and the tour guide/driver was excellent. He was friendly, informative and helpful, often offered to take photographs for others during the stops.

We pre-purchased a picnic lunch which we took on the cruise and was glad we did otherwise purchasing on the spot would have been more expensive. We stopped at Te Anau on the way to Milford and again on the way back to Queenstown so we managed to see quite a number of places on the tour. Overall it was a really good experience!

We had an amazing trip to Milford Sound today. The weather was great and the guide from Milford Sound Select, Lester, is the best guide you can have for this trip. The whole way from Queenstown to Milford Sound he presented the landscape and wildlife with interesting stories in a funny and relaxing way. The boat cruiz in Milford Sound was great as well. If you want to have a great experience you should book a organized trip with a bus, because you get much more information about the area.

Thankyou so much, The travel to Milford Sound was great. Comfortable and the stops along the way would not have been found by us driving on our own. The tunnel to Milford is only one vehicle wide so would not try it in our own vehicle that is for sure. Thanks for a great commentary.

This trip was enjoyable because the driver was informative, the cruise was lovely and the service was great. Unfortunately, we didn't get to fly back because of the non-stop snow so that was disappointing but I asked for a refund for that portion of the trip and was refunded within a couple of days. The trip itself is spectacular, The scenery is breathtaking, even before you get to Milford sound itself. The drive around Lake Wakitipu was beautiful, especially at the early hour of the morning, with the sunrise reflected off the snow peaked mountains. We had several stops on the way for photo opps and to stretch our legs. The bus was comfortable and the driver commentated on points of interest. Once we reached the alpine level the snow started which, whilst adding to the scenic atmosphere, it unfortunately didn't stop. Even at this stage we were informed we wouldn't be flying back due to the weather. Disappointing, but not much could be done about that.
We arrived and got on the cruise. We encountered a problem here. I thought I had booked the buffet luncheon. However, we were told that we were only going to get the 'picnic' pack. I explained this to our driver and he directed me to a lady within the cruise building but she didn't seem too interested. I then inquired once on board the boat and they kindly let us have the buffet. I had paid an extra $30 at the time of booking so feel we got what we paid for but only after having to ask two of the boat crew.
The cruise itself is pretty impressive so a good opportunity to take lots of pics. As we arrived back to the jetty they informed us that the road had been closed. I'm not sure why but they let us drive out in convoy. It ended up being a 6 hour drive home through pretty scary conditions. Our driver, Arthur, should be commended for keeping calm whilst driving through conditions best described as treacherous. He even arranged the cafe where we had our pit stop on the way home to stay open later because we were so late getting there they were ready to close. He did an outstanding job and we were very grateful he was our driver.
On the downside, the bus was supposed to have onboard toilets but they didn't seem to be working. No big deal but, judging by other reviews here, this didn't seem to be a one-off occasion. The glass roofed bus was a winner, though, so all in all I'd highly recommend this trip.
