“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

This is a really lovely hotel. We booked a non-lake view, but it seems that meant we were set between two other lake view rooms, slightly back. We still had a stunning view of the water! The room was spacious, immaculately clean and I think could possibly win an award for "Bathtub With the Best View." (The bathroom has a huge window - that you can close for privacy - that looks right out the main window to the view outside!) The bathroom also features a heated floor, jets in the tub, and a towel warmer. It may just be the most awesome bathroom ever!

The bed was comfortable, thoughtful amenities were provided, the hotel had free wifi and parking, and the staff were unfailingly warm and polite. We stopped by concierge for some suggestions of activities and the woman working was fantastic. Within a few minutes she had options spread out before us and then had us booked into our choices quickly and easily. The hotel runs a shuttle into the town centre which runs every hour.

If I ever find myself in Queenstown again, this is where I'm staying!

We stayed in a 2 bedroom executive lakeview apartment at the Rees with our 2 young children for 4 nights after reading the positive TripAdvisor reviews. The excellent service here started well before we had even arrived: I contacted the concierge to assist in us arranging activities during our short three day trip, and then required their help on several occasions during our stay, particularly when a flight tour was cancelled due to bad weather and we needed to rearrange all of our other activities at short notice. A huge thank you goes to Niels, Patrick and Mel at the Concierge Desk, for all their help – their combined assistance meant that in our short 3 day stay, we managed to see and do so much in this wonderful holiday destination.

LOCATION:- The location of the Rees Hotel is excellent – it is situated on the lakeside of Frankton Rd which affords it magnificent uninterrupted views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountains. It is approximately half way between, and only a few minutes to both the airport and the centre of town. Whilst they do offer complimentary shuttles into town, there is so much to do in Queenstown and it is much easier to hire a car at the airport which then allows you easy access to all the local and regional sites, and easy access into town for meals. There is free undercover parking onsite, and a secure ski locker. Whilst the Queenstown traffic can be surprisingly busy in the city centre, we never seemed to have difficulties finding street parking in relatively close proximity to where we were heading.

ACCOMMODATION:– the 2 bedroom executive lakeview apartment was wonderful. Modern, spacious, comfortable, beautifully furnished, and simply spectacular views. It consisted of 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with heated floors & towel rails, kitchen, dining area, living area with fireplace, in-suite washing machine, and large balcony. The heating in the apartment was excellent – fireplace, heated floors and ducted heating all ensured that we were toasty warm throughout our stay! The only thing we missed having in the apartment was a bathtub – it is nice to soak in a bath at the end of a physically adventurous day, and I am surprised that they are not a standard feature in this otherwise luxurious resort.

FACILITIES:–The Rees is a modern and extremely well maintained resort which takes full advantage of its spectacular lakeside location. Due to our short stay, we never had the opportunity to sample the resort’s restaurant or day spa facilities. The restaurant menu looked excellent, and next time I would definitely try dining here. The day spa is on demand only, but we were advised that bookings can usually be easily arranged as little as an hour or so in advance. Unfortunately, the Rees does not have a swimming pool which really is the only thing that lets this excellent resort down.

STAFF:– All the staff at the Rees were wonderful – welcoming, courteous and friendly. And as already mentioned, the Concierge here are excellent - extremely helpful, efficient and knowledgeable about all the local and regional sights and tours.

QUEENSTOWN AS A FAMILY HOLIDAY DESTINATION:– We absolutely loved Queenstown - there is so much fun stuff to do here! This was actually a brief reconnaissance trip to explore NZ as a possible ski destination – we spent only half a day skiing at Cardrona and were actually extremely disappointed, although this was largely due to terrible weather making the drive up the mountain difficult, and then preventing us from exploring the entire ski resort properly. As we have skied Canada the last 4 years, the bar has been set extremely high, and it was always going to be big boots to fill. Had our previous experience only been on Australian slopes, I don’t think we would have felt the same disappointment. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t make a point of returning here for the skiing, but I would definitely make a point of returning for all the other wonderful activities in this fantastic part of the world! We absolutely loved the skyline gondola & luge, shotover jet, and visit to Doubtful Sound. And we have a long list of all the things we want to see which we missed on this visit, and all the places we want to return to again. Ideally we will stay for at least twice as long next time!

In summary, we had a truly wonderful stay at the Rees in Queenstown - quite simply a fantastic resort in a spectacularly scenic part of the world - we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Lakeside apartments have spectacular views!

The training manager Patrick at the front desk took our bags and opened our car door upon arrival and escorted us to our room. He also promptly accommodated us in our request for additional needs which we totally appreciated. We had booked a 2 bedroom lake view room and due to the cost of our 3 night stay was a little surprised at the size of the apartment (we were expecting the apartments at least to be bigger) but nevertheless the apartments were of a high quality. They were comfortable, especially the cosy gas fire and had a fabulous view over the lake.

Downside was that the cleaner knocked on our door twice on two different mornings to find out when they could clean which became a little annoying after the second day. Once we left for the day and returned the dishwasher had been left full, one bin was not emptied and the toilet rim was not wiped.

The Rees is a truly world class hotel. We stayed in one bedroom lake view apartment for 7 nights. From the spacious rooms, delightful gas fire, amazing views from the balcony to the heated floors in the bathroom, fully functional kitchen and little weather cards placed under the doormats each morning, this really is a special space. The location is also perfect being about 5 mins drive from both Queenstown and Frankston. The restaurant is a bit expensive but the food and service is superb. If we ever come back to Queenstown we'll definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a lake view room, it's worth it.

We recently stayed at The Rees for a week long snow boarding trip and had the most amazing stay! The breakfast every morning was delicious, the shuttle bus was so convenient, the location and the beautiful lake view room! Just perfect!
Particularly delighted with the massages after a week of hitting the slopes, the fireplace with a glass of wine in the evening and one of the staff members Patrick who was extremely helpful and friendly and always entertaining driving us to and from town!
We would highly recommend The Rees and would most definitely stay on our next visit.
