Fearful that skiers might be taking all the Queenstown accommodations, I hurriedly booked at Rees on recommendations from TripAdvisor, but without doing my usual bit of research regarding the property. By the time we arrived after almost three weeks of traveling, quite frankly I had forgotten completely about the place. Were we thrilled upon arrival! When we entered our room, in a word: Wow!

The hotel is built on the side of a steep, multistory drop-off from the main highway above to the lake below. Instead of the interior hallways of a typical hotel, Rees’ “hallways” are ramps on the exterior making it an extraordinary seven (or so) story structure that one must see to believe. And, one goes up to the lobby at the top rather than down!

Do not fail to seek a “lake view” room. For that little bit of extra expense, you will be awarded one of the most spectacular views imaginable, a beautiful lake surrounded by enormous mountains. In a word: Wow…again! The rooms are wonderful, immaculate, modern with wonderful beds, luxurious bathrooms (all the cool trimmings like towel warmers), sitting area, romantic balcony. Beautiful!
If there is a single inconvenience for Rees (and it is certainly minor), it would be the fair distance from the hotel to downtown Queenstown, certainly not walking distance. Queenstown is a vibrant place filled with fun restaurants, clubs, and shops. We had a rental car, but parking is scarce and the streetsz are small and crowded in the downtown area so driving isn’t always the best option for transport. (there are some excellent parking garages, however…ask at the Visitor’s Center for locations). The Rees operates a shuttle bus back and forth. Nice, but the shuttle fills quickly, so make reservations at the desk. And, you can hire a water taxi which sounds cool but you have to call and book passage. While all these modes of transport are available, each requires a bit of work to accomplish.
The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. We didn’t try the in-house restaurant, but heard nice things about it. There was parking on every level; free of charge and very nice, but it was a fairly long hike to our room even so.

Queenstown is a cool place to visit and the Rees is THE place to stay, in our opinion, in Queenstown. We only wished we had three months to stay instead of three days! In a word: Wow!

Room Tip: Tip: If you book a trip to Milford Sound, which you should, the tour companies will pick you up at the Rees.

From check in to departure, our experience at the Rees as a birthday treat was superb! From the extra little touches of chocolates and fruit, to the room decor, size and views, the amazing spa bath, fabulous courtesy coach to town and unbeatable service, I would return to the Rees in a flash. You stand true to your mission statement! Well done the Rees!

Our return stay in a three bedroom lakefront apartment at The Rees. Breathtaking views, luxury interiors and excellent service.

Close and yet far enough from downtown Queenstown. Nice quite lakefront property.

Best service and management standards we have experienced in New Zealand!

My husband and I stayed at the Rees somewhat by accident. We were originally booked into the Hilton however unsatisfied by our room we moved to The Rees. We were able to view the room prior to booking, even managed to get an early check in the following day. (11am!)
On arrival we were given a congratulations note and candy from remarkable sweets. Small gesture goes along way!
The Room was spacious and more than comfortable. We had a one bedroom apartment which had underfloor heating in the bathroom and kitchen, and a lovely gas fire place. Kitchen supplies were plenty to get by on- including coffee/milk for the morning.
The beds were a dream to sleep in - definitely didn't loose any sleep.
We booked into the restaurant, were we were once again congratulated by waitress staff throughout the night, two complimentary side meals from the chef to our already three course meal. Each course was amazing - could not recommend visiting the restaurant highly enough. Amazing food and very good service. We were even sent back to our room with little chocolate gifts.
We utilised the concierge service multiple times throughout our stay which was great to take the pressure off knowing you had your ticket before leaving the hotel. The staff were always on hand to help us before we left the hotel for our day trips.

We had a car - the underground free parking was very handy.
Never felt the hotel was that far from the city centre. Also mention the free internet - minor point it was a little slow and there is a download cap. However being in adventure capital and with amazing restaurants to go dine in and amazing views - surly can't spend that much time behind the laptop!

Overall - highly recommending this hotel for your stay in Queenstown. Clean, Amazing Views of the lake and snow capped Remarkable Mountains, Superior Service.
The General Manager happened to be making himself a coffee and trying to escape the counter however took the time to still serve us (as the front desk was very busy at the time) and offered advice on the area when asked.

Thank you Rees for making our honeymoon and great stay. Your front desk staff definitely have patience dealing with some of the hotel clientele.

Room Tip: Go with an apartment if you'd like more room than an hotel room. Corner level 3 or 4 apartments are best. Ask to be away from the driveway - we could see into those rooms quite easily from the driveway.

Frommer's lists this as a "moderate" hotel, but it is really much closer to a five-star experience at a very reasonable rate. The apartments are extremely well decorated and spacious, with terrific kitchens. The views are excellent, though it's not worth it to pay for a lake view. The breakfasts at True South were outstanding, as was the service from the reception staff and the rotating concierges. Highly recommended.
