The Rees Hotel Owner should be embarrassed! The Front Office Manager was rude and unprofessional! We have traveled the world and have NEVER experienced such unprofessional behavior! They advertise Free Shuttle....not available due to small size which caused $50 trips into town. They advertise Free Internet....we were charged hundreds of dollars. They advertise Room Cleaning...they limit their service. The Room was very very hot and stuffy since there is no air con. It is a cheap hotel on the water.....but you get what you pay for. NOTHING and RUDENESS!

Room Tip: Do not stay here!

We were doing a tour of the South Island and had been staying at small privately-owned and -operated rental properties. So it was great to be at The Rees, a corporate property, for a change. We had a studio apartment with a terrace and a gorgeous view of Lake Wakatipu. We were quickly checked-in and directed to the garage where a Check-in Assistant was waiting for us to help carry our bags and find our unit. The Rees is very modern in design and style (all steel, glass and stone) and it's not very easy to find your way the first time, so it was nice that someone was there to assist us.

The unit was very luxurious and everything in it spelled comfort - from the huge king-size bed with the soft comfortable pillows and crisp/clean beddings, large couch, wide-screen TV, refrigerator, etc. The bathroom was equally large, with a glass-encased shower, extra-large sink, white walls and tiles. What's more, the floor and the towel rack were heated! A very luxurious treat on a very cold day. The towels were heavenly soft as well, and aside from the usual hair dryer. shampoo/conditioner, etc., there was also a package of spa-products as a welcome gift - very nice touch.

There is a gourmet restaurant in the hotel for really fine dining, but we did not get to try it. I was very sorry we were only there for one day and one night. It would have been really great if we could have stayed longer, but we were on a tight schedule and had to go to the next town. It will be my dream to be able to stay at The Rees again.

Room Tip: Certainly the rooms facing the lake are desirable. We were lucky to be upgraded to one without payi...

The thing that annoyed me most about The Rees is the lack of attention to detail.

I didn't like my room configuration - it was at the top of a flight of stairs and would have been difficult had I been unable to climb them. The room was sideways - it spread our horizontally from said stairs - with what I can only describe as a smokers balcony at the end. The rooms are hot. Weather outside was hot enough but inside it was stifling without any help from a heater. I kept leaving doors and windows open only to have housekeeping close them each day.

Speaking of housekeeping, this is where The Rees loses my vote: no detail. The housekeeping staff are probably itinerant resort workers but couldn't someone train them to clean the room, display the towels properly, make sure the bathroom amenities are refilled, neaten one's toiletries etc?
Beds were also quickly and shabbily made: edges of different length are a no go for a supposedly higher class hotel.

The restaurant is tiny - no minuscule. The staff are casual and again itinerant. Nothing wrong with that but clear the dishes, make sure I don't need pepper (not once was I asked) and try to get my name right. Breakfasts were the best part of this restaurant.

I'm not sure if I would come back to The Rees. I certainly will come back to Queenstown but there are many accommodation options to choose from. The Rees is trying hard but I think they lack leadership. It could be perfect but it missed by that much!

Room Tip: Ask for a room ending in 2 -- 711(2) for instance. Don't go for 711 (3)

We stayed in a 2 bedroom lake view apartment.

+Positives
+Great service (for the hotel portion, didn't eat at the restaurant)
+Nice use of space in the apartment, felt spacious for 4 people
+Provided everything we would need-even a washer and dryer unit within our unit
+Paid extra for the lake view and it was worth it!
+Quiet

-Negatives
-a little further away from the "downtown" area in Queenstown. This was not really a problem for us bc we had a car but the hotel also offers shuttle service on the hour (8am-10pm) and is only a 5 minute drive

Note: If you're looking to buy some groceries and have access to a car, head to New World near the airport. It's so much better than the Four Square located in town.

My husband and I stayed here two times on our visit to New Zealand. We love the Rees, superior service, thank you to all the staff!!! We were treated like family with the best service. You will not be disappointed and you will be sad when you leave. The lake view was beautiful (from your bedroom and living area)you have sliding glass doors to enjoy the beautiful views of the lake. There is a a full kitchen , washer and dryer and a fireplace to relax by. The porch is a great place to have happy hour or what ever makes you happy, the view is beautiful! We loved every minute of our stay and will return as often as possible.

We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our stay at the Rees.

Our two bedroom apartment was very well appointed. The views were beyond description.

We appreciated the exceptional service provided by Jerry in the breakfast room and Patrick at the concierge desk. Every staff member we came into contact with was courteous and helpful.

We are planning on returning when my son graduates from the University of Canterbury. Hopefully in two years.

Please convey my thoughts and appreciation to GM Mark as well. The Sasso restaurant was excellent.

Your staff was impeccable during our stay.

We have told many friends already.

Happy New Year.

Room Tip: The lake views re incredible. Take the free shuttle into Towne Center. Don't be afraid to...

The problem with Queenstown particularly at New Year's eve is too many people and a shortage of trained staff through the town. This is one of the world's most beautiful towns and the rooms and the apartments of the Rees have sensational views. Reasonable sized rooms with good bathrooms and a balcony are around USD 220 and 3 bedroom apartments about $470. The hotel is about a 30 minute lakeside walk from town or about a 5 minute shuttle bus or taxi ride. Queenstown is close to the airport (a $24 taxi) and the Rees is even closer. The only thing that lets the Rees and its restaurant (really good food..try the tasting menu) is the service. They are really an international lot, try hard but are probably poorly managed.
